Hi guys
I purchased a 32 inch Sony LCD recently and now want to upgrade my dvd player. My main requirement is USB (sick of burning dvds) and Divx since I want to watch shows and movies downloaded from you know where.

My dilemma is I dont know whether to buy a HDMI dvd player or buy a cheapo dvd player like the Moser Bear one. I dont have a HDMI cable either and cant imagine investing another 3k just for a lark.

At the same time I dont mind shelling a reasonable amt if there there is a hell of a diff between HDMI and normal video. Would really like some advice and keep in mind, its mostly to enjoy shows downloaded off the net on my LCD.

Also which ones would you suggest? I have heard good things abt the Philips dvd player but its a little steep for me since I would have to invest in a HDMI cable too.

I am in Delhi, any stores where I can test the players out or see how HDMI works?

Any thoughts on these two players?
Compare India

Compare India - DVD Players - Samsung-DVD-1080PK

Compare India - DVD Players - Moser Baer-MB 6988 B

Someone also suggested a player called Passion from Big Bazzar for 1200 but I do wonder if it will actually perform!

shows downloaded from the net are going to look very bad on ur LCD even if connected through HDMI..but DVD's will definitely look much better than what tehy do over componsite..if ur planning to buy a DVD player buy something which upscales regular DVD's...

Try n see how you can connect your PC to LCD. Nothing like that, Get DVI to HDMI cable and your all set. No diff in HDMI and DVI picture quality.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I really dont know what HTPC is:ashamed:

As far as the PC set up goes, I have a macbook. God only knows how many cables I need just to set it up. I thought might as well invest in a dvd player as I do watch dvds too :)

Fahrenhite thanks for the input. I did notice that an avi file of say a Lost epi looked average when I burnt it as a divx disk. So you think even if I use HDMI, the quality improvement would be negligible? Am I better off than buying a cheaper dvd player sans HDMI?

My collection of original dvds is nothing much to boast abt since I always end up buying the Pallika ones :)

Display quality difference between Component & HDMI for non-HD videos is not much; and for a 32 inch LCD, it is negligible.

As for USB, yes, the USB enabled DVD players do display DivX movies through USB thumbdrive. However the display could be jerky in action scenes if video bitrate is too high (as in 1.4 GB movies). So its always better to burn it on DVD-RW. No problems in 700 MB movies though.

Thanks! One epi of the show is usally 350MB so I dont think the USB playback would be a problem. So I think I 'll buy a non HDMI player like the Moser Bear one. Looks like a better option that the Chinese or Passion players :)

If you are buying anyway then why not go for HDMI one? It will be around 1k more but then you will always have option to go HDMI whenever you want. No need to buy HDMI cable for now (assuming that its not provided free with DVD player) because even HDMI player will have option to use component cables only.

I am assuming you intend use component cables (Red-Green-Blue, 3 cables for video feed) for video rather than composite (single cable for video feed, usually yellow colored)

Yes. Significant difference in quality! There is no reason for using composite these days unless one has a very old TV with no component inputs.

No. Tata sky is Composite. Components are for your DVD player only. Price ranges from Rs 20 to 2000 :-)

But a Rs 150-200 component cable will be suffice for your needs.
