Well, I have to get a new connection for net @ home in blore, so what are my options?

1. I dont have a BSNL landline, was thinking about the 500 plan with night unltyd dload option. Soooo if I want the plan, shud i go for a new landline? will the rental plus blah blah charges be extra aside from the bband charges?

3. I have a laptop @ home now, will it be safe for it to be used 24x7 as a dload rig?

4. Since i have a lappy, I'm considering a wireless solution. Please help me out in this, since i'm a n00b when it comes to wireless.

EDIT : Forgot to tell, I'm in for a one time purchase of modem or router.

I recently shifted from my airtel 256k unlimited to BSNL 500pm NU. Man i can download SO much now! But the prob is frequent disconnections. (lol its happening while im typing this!). Plus be careful about that 2.5GB limit. Its a up+down and gets over sooner than you think.

Using a lappy 24/7 does have an effect on ur batt life. Its safe but will slowly reduce batt life.

If you wanna purchase a modem, contact Chief-Techie. I got the Billion Bipac 5200S through him. Very good modem. Got it for ~900.. dont remember..

But gettiong a BSNL lione has haggles. plus extra line rental, blah blah...

Okay, how do i contact airtel regarding this? The line in mysore is disconnected now....

I had to wait ~1.5 or so months to get my connection. Was using my Airtel till then.

the house owner at my place has a BSNL landline...i'll try to strike a deal with him

So ankit, using BSNL only for the net purpose? how much are you getting billed?

Bsnl Home 500 comes with 2.5gb download per month and 2-8 is free unlimited dowloading. the net bill alone will come to 500 +12.24% tax comes arnd 560 or so plus add the landline rental abt 200 so u end up paying arnd 760 per month. This is good if you plan not to use for heavy downloads in the daytime...if you want 24x7 connection its better to stick with airtel.

Also I am getting only 256kbps unlimited connx in airtel after paying 1124(inc tax) per month.

Since you are using laptop I would suggest you not to use it as download rig, so then BSNL will be a better choice but then the waiting time to get the connx is too long and the service is pathetic if the connx goes down...u can assume that there will be no support at all and customer care is non existent.

But again the speeds upto 2mbps in bsnl rock!! the upload rate is capped at 512kbps

Now think which connection do you want coz both have their merits and demerits :P

For the router thingy, get a Wifi router Buffalo WHR-G54S - Rs 2080 inc VAT

Hmmm now the BSNL makes sense...

How do i apply for a new BSNL line? went thru BSNL website, couldn't make out a thing :S

No strings attached ?

as simple as 256kbs becomes 384kbs for the same price ?

YUP, he told me that under the new plan my call rates will be blah blah but I found it to be same as earlier and moreover I use the connx for net alone..
The Speed will be upgraded to 384kbps in 48hrs...
Right now I am paying 1124/- inc taxes and I asked what will be the total he said same 1124/- with taxes assuming I make no calls. So basically its like a free speed bump :)

@ SunnyBoi

BSNL's speed/price ratio may seem tempting but BSNL sucks!

i WAS a bsnl customer & now a happy Airtel user..

BSNL??

-Disconnections

-long link-connection times

-unknown usages from ur account till u get a fat bill!

-customer service (ROFL!)

Airtel - tad more expensive, but defn. worth it!

now that the 256 utd. plan is only 750..might as well get that !

This is all good but would be even better to see it all in writing especially the T's & C's. But when i try to look up tariffs for the Karnataka Circle i don't seem to get anything

http://www.airtel.in/ForYou_ChooseCircle.aspx?path=1/9/146

Also its rather odd that there is an expiry for this offer, recall that when i went onto the 128kbs a few years back, they automatically upgraded me to 256kbs and informed me about it. This expiry date might be for new subscribers but what about for existing ones ?

Nervous to end up on some lame top-up plan with hidden traps :(

Airtel is rock steady, in 3 straight years - or is it 2 - I can't remember I haven't had any issues or downtime. Coming from Sify this is a dream run. Had some modem disconnection issues which CC resolved with a day with engineer at doorstep with new modem. Airtel stability and support can't be beat. They really are that good and for India this is a novel and welcome experience. Total peace of mind.

Only as far as plans they have been lagging a bit, hopefully they will pull up their socks soon but at least in Bangalore you get 384UL which is not available in Pune yet.

For Wifi router I would recommend Buffalo only, HP G54 at Rs 3600 if you need long range or G54S at 2200 if you don't.

hey blurp :P

Stop arguing, pick up the phone, dial customer care and speak to them. I was as sceptical as you. But I called them yesterday and they upgraded me to the 384 kbps plan. It should be done in 48 hrs.

Keep a copy of your bill in hand. And they will ask you some questions for security purpose. Like the DOB of the person in whose name the connection is registered, when was the lasp payment made, billing address, last bill amount, etc.

But after this, you are set.

Actually i have this prob with BSNL. 2.5GB limit, nope will be finished in no time...

Prolly I'll go with airtel.

OOkay more doubts regarding this 256kbps for 750. Firsrt i have to get an airtel connection, then call up customer care and upgrade? or do i get this offer rightaway with a new connection?

U can get it straightaway. Also tell u are from so and so MNC and get the waiver for deposit.....also if you are having airtel postpaid connx then say u are having postpaid n all so.....basically convince him that u are a good old airtel customer and you will pay bills in time, this will help u to get the connx for free( no initial setup costs)

aha...I have all that :D what MNC shud i say? :P i'm an airtel postpaid customer too :D
