Guys , I have a Dell XPS M1210 laptop , which is almost 3years old now .

Almost , 10 months back it encountered some errors with its Display . Everything started to come in 8bit resolution . Tried all settings , re-installing of drivers and all but nothing worked . Then i gave it to a known techie guy who also owns a shop of computer hardware , he inspected the laptop and told me its onborad graphics card ( nvidia 7400 ) is faulty and needs to be changed and told me charges to be 6k . I agreed and asked him to get it done . He took 2days time , and returned me the laptop in perfectly working condition . I used the lappy for a few days and as much as i remember it worked fine for almost next 3-4 months .

Then problems started coming up , display was working fine but while working ( browsing or music or video playback ) suddenly laptop used to freezed , mouse cursor used to freeze on its own , and nothing used to work after this . After doing a force re-start things used to get fine for almost 10minutes , then again same thing used to happen .

I tried re-installing of drivers , but nothing worked . I kept the laptop closed in cupboard and started using my Lenovo net-book , as my purpose of browsing used to get solved on net-book too .

Now , today i took out the laptop connected charger , and turned it on . And what i see is completely BLANK SCREEN :@. No boot up BIOS screen , no sound nothing , just the power button light's up . I am worried now , what to do with it .

As i have never been into repairs much , so have no idea as to who is the best person in Delhi for laptop repairs .

Guys suggest me , what could be the the cause of this Blank Screen and where should i get it repaired with confidence ??

even i have M1210 imported from US in 2007, working like new..

here are problem i faced..

1] freezing problem because laptop heat up....so i bought Cooler master laptop cooler...it works amazing after that.

2] i had win vista installed..now installed windows 7 which works better than vista.

3] changed battery, this one is 3rd one. may be your laptop battery is gone. change it.

3] changed 2gb ram to 4gb.

I cleaned laptop fan by opening the laptop and removing laptop fan. never given to the hardware shop as i don;t trust them.

About your problem, Possible that hard disk is gone.

yeah u are right , for freezing problem it was heat issues , for that even i started using a cooling pad . but this time even though it was working over a cooling pad but still it happened .

I am running on windows XP only .

Battery i doubt too , but still should power up on AC power .

RAM i will upgrade once it comes in perfect working condition .

Issue is now , where should i take this lappy ??

Any known reliable guy for repairs of laptop know . ( with reasonable fixed charges )

I have a dell vostro 1400 laptop with nvidia 8400 gs GPU and I can relate to your problem word by word. My brother was using the laptop and it first gave display troubles, after getting it working it worked for a few days. Few days after everything froze and now even I get a blank screen with just the power button lighting up and no boot screen nothing. My gfx card is intact & I think the problem is somewhere else. I am in Pune and currently looking to get my laptop repaired too from some trusted place. I am facing the same dilemma about whom to give it too as I am not very informed on these things.

Please let me know if you find any good place for these repairs.

BTW I contacted dell for a warranty extention and they quoted "One year Next Business Day 8x5 warranty extn price is Rs. 6,017/-, and Two years for the same is Rs. 10,473/- (taxes all inclusive) One year Next Business Day 8x5+ Complete Cover warranty extn price is 8163 /-, and Two years for the same is Rs.12929/- (taxes all inclusive)". I am planning to get a warranty and get the laptop repaired by bearing the cost during recertification. Not sure how feasible is that though.

Let me know if you manage to find a solution to this. If I find a good option I will inform you. Thanks. :)

Hey Bro,

- Check with external monitor

- Hold the Fn key and power the machine on to check if it goes into diags

- Remove the rams, hdd and Optical drive, adapter and battery and hold the power down for about 45 secs and release it and connect 1 ram only and power on to see if you get the no boot device available screen.

further help PM me your number, i shall help you :)

Opening the lappy and taking out RAM HDD is not an easy job for me . I'll break something or the other :(

Well , if u think u can do it all , i can send the lappy to u whenever u are in delhi .

Thanks a ton ryan :)

It was immense pleasure to have a word with u . Without u it wouldn't have been possible . U are simply great !

Now , lets hope that DELL , actually replaces my motherboard for free :D

don't worry they will if they've filed the complaint . i have an XPS 1330 , and i faced a similar issue within 3 months of my purchase , i saw distorted 256 colours and then color bands then it'd be pink dots etc you get my point. turns out the gfx chip was faulty, now since that's onboard... the only option is a mobo replacement or if someone is really good at extraction of BGA's and then replacing them. no worries since i was covered but by warranty and got it replaced.

here's my findings on the XPS models heats issue , clean the heat sink fan i'm a pussy so i cannot pull the whole heatsink out so i use Qtips and some spirit (a lens cleaner) to just rub all the deposited dust on the fan blades and finally switch my vacuum cleaner to blower mode and blow air into it from the outlet side of the heatsink and then the fan blades to dry the spirit . no need for a cooling pad for me , just keep a chk at temps when they go over 75c it's a call for a cleaning job :)

Thanks kunal for the post , i have registered a complaint at dell , and they have given me a service no. too stating my M1210 MBD needs to be changed . Now waiting for a call from them, early this Tuesday or Wednesday max :)

and will definitely keep the cleaning heat sink fan thing in mind from now on . In past 4 years i dint do the cleaning even once as i dint had any idea of it . although did used a notebook cooling pad always :)

good for you mate , and the cooling pad also stops serving you when the dust crosses the threshold of how much of it can your laptop handle so it's better off giving it a clean once in say 2-3 months and you call roll without the unnecessary cooling pad :D
