PC Peripherals Need help in building a highend linux compute system

Hi Guys,

I am building a good linux system for compute jobs. This would be my first assembled PC. Below is the configuration and the price I am getting on SP road. Is it a good system for compute intensive jobs?

1. Intel core i7 920 - Rs 13800
2. Gigabyte x58 extreme MOBO - Rs 19500
3. Corsair DDR3/1333 8GB - Rs 9000
4. 500Gb*2 Segate SATA HDD (barracuda ES2) - Rs 2500*2
5. CM SMPS RS 650W - Rs 4000
6. CM HAF-932 Cabinet -Rs 9000
7. APC 1.1 KVA UPS -Rs 4700
8. Monitor Samsung 22" T220 -Rs 13000
9. XFX 9600 GT 1GB -Rs 6200

I wanted to for w3520 processor and a dual socket server motherboard but both are not available in bangalore right now. Hence decided for core i7 920.
Is it a good system? I am particularly not sure about power supply, UPS and the cabinet. Does anyone have experience in building a Redhat system on the above platform?

Are the pricing competitive? Which are the good shops on SP road where I can buy these things. Please note I wouldn't mind paying few bucks extra if I get good customer service and trouble free exchange/replacement.
Thanks in advance. I really appreciate your time and inputs.

its all good
but keep in mind the GA EX58 UD5 + a better GFX
but if you dont want that then u can go for this setup

eh, btw, which SMPS is that, Real Power one??

Red hat system are pretty easy to install. But what for you are building such a high end rig ?

Even a Celeron/Sempron with 1gb ram will be enough to run RHEL | Fedora smoothly..

6. CM HAF-932 Cabinet -Rs 9000

No to both. You are better off with corsair tx650+ nzxt tempest combo. Not that I am saying haf 932 is bad although I have seen some people from certain forums complaining it to be a dust magnet (then again many well ventilated case are) but this case have adequate air filters, hard drive rails, cable management acces and good enough fans- does the job.

Another point is spending so much on a 1333mhz rams? Do you think that's wise? Save money on the mobo- maybe biostar x58 or gigabyte x58 ud5 board. Import the rams via KMD.

Thank you all.

1. GA EX58 UD5 is available for 15500. Whats the difference between GA EX58 UD5 and GA EX58 Extream?

2. Are other pricings looks uptodate? expensive? good deals?

3. SMPS is CM RS extreme power. RS650-PCARE3-EU. Is it good enough?

4. How much and which RAM should be ok?

5. I am building this for compute jobs. Basically for running simulations.

@rax2411

Dude, you are spending 9k for a cabinet and only 4k for the SMPS !!! You gotta be kidding.

Exchange the pricing :p. The Sorcerer has said the right combo. It will be much better than your proposed one. Cooler Master Extreme Power is definitely bad choice.

4GB RAM is considered enough. But I would not comment before you mention an estimate of the computation to be done by your computer.

For better graphics on 22", you should consider 4770 ( you may have to wait for couple of weeks ) or GTS250, GTX260, ATI 4870 (ascending order of price).

Compute requirements - let's just say that there will be two people using this machine, remotely, for running 6-10 sims in parallel for blocks having around 25 to 100K flops.

2. Are other pricings looks uptodate? expensive? good deals? prices are ok

3. SMPS is CM RS extreme power. RS650-PCARE3-EU. Is it good enough? dont go for it, go for GlacialPower 650W instead - 4.8k(approx)

4. How much and which RAM should be ok? corsair/g-skill/ocz any one of these will be good

there ya go...

@sabby.

I feel the same for SMPS. I guess I will go for corsair tx650 as suggested by you guys. However is HAF932 a real bad choice? I thought 4 USB ports would be pretty useful on the front panel. And I read good reviwes about it's cooling.

I did say there are 2 versions available in glacialtech. If the user is going for this he will have to make sure its a gl-650AA rather than 650a model.

which are the best dealers on SP road, bangalore? I am looking for real good consumer friendly support/replacement services along with great prices.

which one is a better choice for sata hard drives? Seagate barracuda ES or Western Digital?

Also I would like to know how easy it would be to do RAID 10 on this mobo? I heard that on intel DX58So it's pretty difficult to do raid as there are no floppy drives and USB comes up only after the OS boots.

[OT] For a guy who wants to run 6-10 sims in parallel for blocks having around 25 to 100K flops , you dont seem to help the forum to be kept clean by triple posting. There is an edit button you know? [/ot]

just a thought use Redhat Enterprise Linux or Ubuntu 8.04 systems for your compute jobs - these are both long term supported OS releases and therefore would be rock solid.

Also remember to look up the usage of "taskset" command to lock a particular compute job to a processor core (to avoid context switching).

@The Sorcerer

I completely agree with you. In the excitement of getting a quick response, I completely miss the point that I was actually spamming such a wonderful forum. I offer my apologies to all the affected members of this forum.

Thanks

@silverbyte
Thanks for the suggestion. I am planning to go for Redhat enterprise version.

I own HAF-932. Yes it's a dust magnet :). But has great airflow. And prefer nvidia cards, they are much better supported on linux especially redhat & fedora

@OP

BTW Why do u need a gpu? This box would be accessed remotely right? OR Are you planning to share those flops with GPU? That I find bit intriguing as all instruction set are not available in GPU.

Instead spend the cash on CPU+RAM.

@linuxtechie
I will use the GPU for some CUDA experiments in addition to the native display.

re-posting the few unanswered questions with some new ones -

1. Any Preferred/trusted vendors at SP road? Please note service/replacement are my prime concern.
2. Will I need a air filter with HAF932? Are there cabinets with built in air filter really good air cooling?
3. What about CPU cooling? What will I need for good cooling. Please not that my room doesn't have any AC.
4. Did anyone do raid10 on this gigabyte mobo on linux?
5. Any more suggestions on mobo? are there better but not very expensive choices available? Please not that I wont be doing any SLI/Crossfires etc.
6. Can we create a dedicated thread on best/economical compute systems as well? provided one already doesn't exist :)

Many thanks for your valuable inputs.
