Need help in setting up a LAN network using SWITCH.

Hello people,

This might be my first technical thread here on this brilliant forum 'TE'.

I have a setup of 8 PC's, I own a 512Kb/s cable modem connection(setup in dial-up of You Telecom). I also have a Switch - a Lan Card(with enough amount of CAT-5 cable). I want all the PC's to share the same connection.

I'll make one PC(PC1) the server -> onboard Ethernet Port connected to Dial-Up cable modem -> add a LAN card to it -> connect the Lan Card to the 'Uplink' port of switch -> share Internet connection on PC1 on all other 7 PCs connected via S/W.

Guys please guide me on how to configure the entire configuration.

I know how to configure a router, but my friend bought a Switch as recommended by the Computerwalla. So now I'll have to do good with what I have with me. BTW Thanks for the recommendation linuxtechie.

I'll ask my ISP Engg. to provide me with a Cable-Modem with a inbuilt Router/Switch.

Guys if I don't get the same please suggest a model.

But I still need to solve the problem, this is what I've understood till now what I need to do :

My ISP gives only one (DHCP'ed) IP address.

To use my 8-port switch, I'll have to put a second network interface card in the pc that is gonna be the host. One card(onboard) is connected to the modem and out of the other(PCI LAN card) I connect to the switch and then run ICS . Which means that my host pc and the pc I want to use must both be on simultaneously.

The switch I have is the 8-port Intex switch .

the system to which the internet is connected is the internet gateway machine. You can implement routing with two NIC by enabling ICS (Internet connection sharing). In windows 7, sometimes disabling windows firewall causes the ICS to stop functioning.

Anyway do these steps on the gateway machine.

I suppose NIC1> internet and NIC 2> switch

open IPv4 properties of NIC1 and under sharing tab, check 'allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection' and hit OK. It gives a message that the other NIC's IPv4 will be configured to use the IP address 192.168.137.1. Hit ok.

Now you have 2 choices. Either accept the 192.168.137.0 range IP on other machines by simply connecting to switch with automatic IP configuration checked to accept the IP offered by the DHCP service of the gateway machine, or manually configure IP address on each machines.

Here's how to do it manually. On NIC2's Ipv4 setings, enable manual configuration and set 192.168.0.1, subnetmask as 255.255.255.0. Leave the gateway blank and DNS as 192.168.0.1 itself.

Now on other machines, assign ipv4 setings like this

IP: 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 (use any u like)

SM: 255.255.255.0

gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.0.1

I was trying the same thing but going wrong with a blank DNS. I'll try all this and let you know asap. :)

Its not the DNS you should leave blank, but the gateway on NIC2 on gateway machine. Theoretically leaving the DNS blank should work, as we are using manual IP, and not via the DHCP but to some reason leaving the dns blank on NIC2 doesnt work.
 
Is it really necessary to have a dedicated PC to act as a gateway as LinuxTechie mentioned? You can go for a good router for about 5-6k which nowadays come with a 4 port switch, connect the switch you already have and you are ready to go. You can go for a cheaper router as well.
 
Always a dedicated router is better as it reduces clutters, and you dont have to keep one PC always on, but routing via ICS is really cheap. You just need to have one additional NIC which costs mere 200~300/- bucks. Also that is the only viable solution if you have a Gigabit network and 8 or more PC.

Just for curiosity, isn't your modem have PPPOE mode? Cause every modern day modem I saw has two option bridge mode and PPPOE mode. If your modem do have PPPOE mode then there is no need to add 2nd NIC.
 
The modem looks old and it's a Cable modem(not ADSL). Even I think that it has a bridge modem but since I don't have any manuals and the company forbids us to go in its interface I cannot check anything. They've set it by default in PPPOE mode. Since now everything is working properly I don't really need a bridge mode.
