Now that we are at it, I got a query:

Can sumone please tell me about the rules relating to Gun keeping?

If I plan to go to the US for work for say 2-3 years, can I buy a handgun for myself? I believe they have different laws for the different states, isn't it?

So, which state has the most relaxed gun laws? Plus, do they allow non US citizen to keep guns? Any place where I can find more information about the gun rules in the different US states?

One forum i can suggest you is city-data. You might want to open a thread in the state you are going to stay in and get first hand information. This is a general city / state related forum but might be worth a shot.

Non-citizens are allowed to get a gun but you should have lived in the state for more than 90 days.

Do you think that you, a non-caucasian immigrant (I am assuming here, of course), should apply for a gun permit/buy a gun in the present political climate in the US?

Why would you want to keep a gun? Are you afraid that you will be subject to extreme racism or is it due to some fascination? Irrespective of your color, I don't think having a gun is a necessity in the US. It is banned in all public places too.

^^ Thanx a lot... Will take a look.

^^ It will be for sporting purposes. Not really for safety issues... Are you saying that getting a gun in the present political scenario is a bad idea? Why?

^^It is not about a necessity. Having a gun in India is a nightmare even if you want it only for sporting purposes.

Add to it the fact that one cannot get new handguns here in India and even the 25 year old handguns of the NPB cost > 5-7 lakh these days!

It is more of a fascination, yes. It would be the only reason why I would think of working abroad (especially the USA). I was thinking that buying newer guns and pursuing the hobby there would be easier... hopefully become a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA, which also happen to be my name initials

)...

And no, I am not drawing inspiration from hollywood flicks! Shooting as a sport has always interested me more than other sports, even cricket!

Tipping - As #[member='whatsinaname'] suggested, 10% to 25% is the norm. The people here expect tip for some reason (and sometimes for no reason).

From friends who have worked in restaurants, I understand that waiters/waitresses are not paid minimum wage in most states but are taxed on minimum wage because they are expected to make up the difference from tips. You get used to it after a while, just think of it as a $12 lunch instead of a $10 lunch.

I can quite easily see a new immigrant applying for a gun permit a few months after moving here getting onto some DHS watch list. People are still very worried about attacks, even 11 years later.

Also, the NRA has become a bit of a joke aligning itself with the extreme right and bordering on anti-immigration and xenophobia.

#[member='Neo-N'] I highly doubt you'll be able to carry your firearm back home in the flight. Also, if you wish to pursue shooting as a hobby, there are shooting ranges across the US where you dont need to have a personal gun.

^^ Okk! So, if I am on the DHS watchlist, how does it affect me? Will I get into trouble even if I just do my work lawfully like any other foreign individual? I mean, will I be picked up for questioning or otherwise upon suspicion every now and then. I am not concerned if that is not the case!

I don't drink, do drugs or plan on visiting strip bars or prostitutes! Hell, I don't even smoke! So, does that help my case any?

And I didn't know that about NRA... So, which organization do the US citizen look up to now for shooting sport?

^^ I won't be thinking of carrying it back. In any case, Indian laws don't allow one to bring back a firearm with oneself even if one has a permit for holding the firearm in that country.

But as I see it, I'll get a H&K P30 for around 1k USD there which is about 50k INR. I would be willing to pay that king of money for the sport for 2-3 years of use. I think I can always sell it off if and when I plan to return. I cannot get that kind of a handgun for use or ownership in India for 100 times that price! Even then, I really like the idea of the shooting ranges where one doesn't need a personal handgun...

I completely understand people may only intend to use it for sport and such but it also leads to a number of problems. I read about school shootings every couple of months and wonder how these teens can easily bring a gun to school.[/font][/background]

#[member='aproxymate'] the problem is that our government is partial with it's laws. Almost all ministers, their sons, son in laws etc etc easily get gun permits and keep guns. They even get a preference and get access to seized firearms auctions where they buy the firearms at dirt cheap prices. Most of these persons have criminal antecedents.

And us, the law abiding citizen are given a long questionnaire to fill up for applying for an arms license. Add to it, the cops expect you to pay them for even looking at the application and then they grill you over the questionnaire. Once they are done, they reject your application.

I hate this. Now they are even planning on putting restrictions on the .22 air rifles as they think that they are too dangerous! This is insane! Most politicians and people having contacts with politicians have guns in Delhi NCR. I remember an incident when a driver of a vehicle refused to pay toll in NCR and when the booth attendant insisted on the toll, the driver pulled out a gun and shot the tollbooth attendant... Where do the strict gun licensing and crap like that goes in these cases??
sad.gif

BTW, I hope one doesn't need to be a US Citizen to be eligible for arms licensing... or is it necessary?

Abuse of power exists everywhere and India is no exception. Government can't help it but it makes sure "law abiding citizens" don't easily get guns and let power go to their head. I'd rather have a few a*holes (ministers and their sons) trotting a gun than 10,000's.

As for your query, It looks like you have to be a citizen according to http://www.ehow.com/how_5795328_apply-federal-firearms-license.html

As for your query, It looks like you have to be a citizen according to http://www.ehow.com/...ms-license.html

^^ The article says:

Laws and regulations for individual gun ownership vary from state to state, but any business which desires to buy, sell or repair guns are required by federal law to obtain a Federal Firearms License or what is commonly known as a gun dealer license or FFL license.
I think it is for businesses only. If they need US citizenship, it would be impossible for me! In any case, even if I do stay there for more than 5 years, I don't think I'll be able to convince myself for renouncing Indian citizenship... I guess it's about time we stopped discussing this! It is making me sad now...

Sorry for the link. Was reading between lines. Yes laws differ from state to state but I think generally u need to be a resident of the state for a certain amount of time.

@Neo-N You hijacked someone else's thread
<

If you get on such a list you can forget about getting on a flight if you arrive in the nick of time as you will always be taken separately for a nice little special checks... Maybe even a rectal exams
gap.gif
.. So arrive 3-4 hours before...

+1 on hijacking the thread

More on topic, at most shooting ranges here you can rent guns (all the way from piddly hand guns to fully automatic rifles/machine guns).

A box of ammo (50 bullets) + a handgun + lane charges would be around $25 from personal experience.

It will make you too perfect & no one will believe you

That's quite reasonable, I thought it would be very costly. Any such in India ?

^^ This thread wouldn't exist if any such thing existed in India!
