:) Hi All...I need a new laptop. Max range 40-45k...

Usage : Mostly mba stuf powerpoint presentations i guess..:P

Some hd movies and old games if possible..

I am looking at HCL Leaptops,Dell and HP...

I am reading a lot about dell's problems..So am getting inclined towards HP-Compaq and hcl..

Dell :The advantage is hd resolution screen and not 1280*800..Aslo can configure..

HCL: Available in railway co-operative store..So taxes etc will be much less..

Also dos and ubuntu versions available...Do not have to pay for crap vista..

Compaq :Again I get hd screen..(on two new models)

I also get a graphics card..Ati 3xxx series...cool..As I am not looking at heavy gaming.

Pros :I get the amd turion x2 R70 proccesors...Dunno how good or bad that is compared to core2 duo 64000 which is the common proc offered in most models..

and then there is hp..

Suggestions please..

p.s If someone really has the time can you check the following models

CQ45-112AU (FZ017PA) CQ60-200, CQ45-205AU (NM595PA)

All compaq models..

dell inspiron and studio 15 (standard configs)

HCL Leaptop Z39 – Z3909 Centrino

HCL Leaptop U39 (AX0U3912) ( I think dos or ubuntu :D)

HP Pavilion dv5-1002au

Also I am in guwahati and taking an educational loan so would prefer in my city and not online transactions..Receipt in my name is must..

If you have no problem with HCL , it seems like the best VFM , an ATi 3XXX wouldnt really help much , and from what i have read around there seem to be more problems with HP/Compaq than Dell

As for the processor performance

Here is the passmark benchmark

AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-70 - 902 points | Rank - 447

Intel Core2 Duo T6400 @ 2.00GHz - 1298 points | Rank - 153

Even the lower end T3200 @ 2.00GHz present on the 30k HCL machines gives a better result than that AMD processor

:) Thanks Manu..Again how good would hd stuff look on a 1280*800 resolution screen..

I have a TB and a half of hd stuff and I would love to play them once in a while..
Also the intel 4500 series integrated accelerator...Would it be able to play large say 12 to 14GB 1080p blue ray rips?

If HD is a bigger requirement for you , why not see HCL Leaptop B38 , has a 15.4" Screen instead of the 14.1" on the above and has a NVIDIA GeForce® 8200M Graphics controller which should play HD content just fine , i dont know about how would it look on that resolution

As regards to playing HD content , the Acer 6930 (~41k) looks like a good choice , it has a 16" Full HD screen with a 1920*1080 resolution , you can bundle it with a Intel 4500 / NVidia 9300 GS / 9600 Gt depending on your requirement

As per my experience HCL have quality issues.. i wud rather recommend u to check for ASUS Laptops. A core 2 duo config with HD3470 521MB and 2-years global warranty costs less than 40k.. (I guess Asus F5SL AP016C is the model)

:) Asus will not be available in Guwahati...and I need the quotation asap for loan purposes...

And acer is my most hated company..I had given one to my bro a couple of years back...Most shit piece of hardware I ever bought...Their build quality is extremely bad...

:) Hi guys...seems like asus is available in Guwahati...

Now I am including the Asus F5SL in my list..

However what about after sales and warranty..

They are quoting 43k for the asus F5SL

yea they quote this much only... u will have to bargain.. i did so n got it for 41k. It has got 2-year warranty whereas other brands have got 1-year only.

Ask them, F5SL has got two versions.. 15.4" and 14.1" i guess..

14.1" is for 43k/41k and the 15.4" is for 52k i guess. or maybe vice-versa :p

If ur looking for a good quality laptop (Asus, Sony, Toshiba, Dell) then IMO Asus F5SL for 41k is the best one.

But do check the available config of F5SL and let us know...

Also ask if they have this laptop (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220520) Asus F50SV-X1.

If they do have it for upto 50k, BUY IT W/O a SeCoNd ThOuGhT!!!!

EDIT: Also check if they have Asus X83VB-X1 (the one in above mentioned e-bay deal)

EDIT2: One more things.. Please check Toshiba's offerings in the same budget too.. ASk for "Toshiba Satellite" series of laptops..

VFM 30k-60k Laptop buying mini-Guide:

1. Should be Core2Duo (Higher Clocks are better but GFX card is more imp.)

2. Graphics card's performance should known before buying :

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

3. Bigger screen size -> Better Cooling , Less Portability , Better Entertainment factor

4. Check different brand's offerings before buying.

5. Check features like rotatable megapixel webcam, card reader, USB ports etc.

6. Check sound quality and Screen quality (Although this dsnt vary much in good laptop brands like Asus Toshiba, Dell, Sony)

:) I went and saw a few laptops...Came across a really cheap one...
Compaq CQ45-205AU..

Now it has an QL-62 and M780G chipset..2Gb ddr2 800ram and ati radeon hd3200 graphics card..

Two advantages...

1. it comes for 31740+ 4% taxes..

2. Comes with free dos..I save money on not buying that shitty vista..:):)

My questions..

Will it be sufficient to play hd movies and some old games..
Games is not necessary..i probably would not get the time..

or is it better to pay a few thousand more and go for the t6000 core2 duo and integrated 4500m media accelerator..
