hi,
i need some advice on an amd64 mobo and graphics card.
im looking for a socket 939, pci-e solution. im not able to find any cheap pci-e board in the market. is it possible to get the ati chipset mobos in India? how much do they cost? im not looking for any ocing features so that doesnt hold any weightage. no fancy features expected too.
also suggest the cheapest pci-e graphics card so that i can upgrade later when pci-e becomes popular.
thank.
raghu.

Mobo - Ati RS480 or MSI RS480 it also comes with onboard Graphics solution
no need for purchasing it. Dont know where you can get it from.

Ati Xpress 200P - without GPU
Ati Xpress 200 - has onboard GPU and a decent one better than Intel GMA900.

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+ Winchester Core - S939

GPU - If you require Nvida GeForce 6200 with Turbo Cache Technology Rs4K approx.

I m looking to get the amd64 2800+. i suppose that cpu will be sufficient. what are the advantages of the 3000+ (3200+) other than slight speed increase over the 2800+, like core revisions or something? btw, when can we expect the venice here - may end?

Dont know if Winchester is available as 2800+ i think it starts from 3000+ to 3500+
its 90nm fabrication and hence generates less heat and is gr8 overclocker
doesnt matter if you dont want to but what if in future you feel the need.
But cant say how much you can overclock with the ATi RS480 Chipset.

also can u tell me how the onboard graphics of msi rs480 performs. board seems pretty cheap ($86 and prolly about 4k here) and is available from priya ltd.

dont know much about it. But you can google search for reviews.

also why are u comparing the ati xpress 200 to the intel gma900?

Because both are onboard graphics solutions.

thanks a lot. i messed up the cpu thing. just realised that 2800+ is not available in 939. edited my post to reflect the same.
can someone indicate the price and availability of the 3000+ here?
raghunandan.

The price for the 3000+ seems to hover around 7-7.5k depending on the location. The venices when they arrive will probably fill up the hi-price point while the prices of the winchesters shud come down........

The MSI board has a single X16 slot and no X1 and X4 slots. So basically its a joke to call it fully pci express since u wouldn't have any PCI-E slots left once u put a graphics card. So say bye bye to pci express add in boards. Its just three standard pci slots other than that. If you're using onboard video, then its fine but with an addon graphics card, I see absolutely no reason to prefer it to an AGP board+AGP card since its already been confirmed that the next gen of graphics chips will also come in the AGP flavour. I'd rather take an MSI K8N Neo4/A8N board instead if PCI-E is really needed.

can u tell me what other cards use pci-e? i will not really need anything more as i will be using the built-in sound card and network card. it does have only 3 pci slots and is in matx format, but i guess it will be good.

btw, are there any cheap socket 754 solutions with pci-e available in India? should explore it if i can save Rs2000 on the processor by going for a 2800+.

thanks.

The newer sound cards/video grabber/tv tuner/RAID cards might land up in PCI-E format. One confirmed PCI-E card is the next version of creative's sound card called the Sound Blaster Zenith.

Yup.....but still there will be PCI cards for a long time...like maybe a year or two.........but still nothin is stable in the techno market....never know wht mite turn POS in a year or two.....

same reason i got my board......has got 2 PCI , 2 16x PCI-E, 1 4x PCI-E nd 1 2x PCI-E

There won't be a normal PCI version of that card.

@Sunny
not yet......not 2 cards no sli plz......but am gonna once am sure tht this rev is possible...wil let ya knw thn

@Chaos
Even in if wont cme out in PCi ...i dnt think its price tag will be down to earth....but yup ur rite, if he's gonna buy tht better not get tht board

PCIE bandwith will only help TV tuners and other heavy encoding cards. Creative Zenith will cost a bomb and it will take atleast 2-3 yrs before PCI dies. So its not much of an issue, on the other hand AGP is fast dying now with AGP cards coming at a premium over PCIE counterparts..

Hence stick with PCIE

AGP cards are not dying and won't die for another year and half for sure. The only AGP cards that are more expensive than its PCI-E versions are the 6600GT and X800XL since they use an HSI bridge. All the high end cards are cheaper in AGP than PCI... 6800 GT/Ultra and X850XT PE included. I'm not saying that AGP is still the way to go but I really don't see a point in buying that board if using an external graphics card. If using onboard graphics, then its a nice deal.

Edit: Also I'm yet to see any performance benefit of PCI-E i.e. unless all ur doing is glReadPixels calls 24x7 :)

Thats the whole point, Integrated gfx also AGP is dying although right now PCIE offers no extra benefits. 6600 GT, X800XL , X800 thats the whole gamut of mid range cards where the sales are highest

do this,

as you say you will upgrade once cpi-e becoms popular.

retain your current config or go for :
amd 2800 + asus k8n + 128mb radeon 9600pro or geforce 6600gt with higher budget or higher

after 1.5-2yrs you can upgrade to 939 with pci-e,money saved at the moment, performance about equal and future maybe more secure

also, amd 3000 winchester isn't too good a performer looses to 3000 754 socket in some things ATLEAST.

pci-e may not benefit you worth spedning 1.5 times the money at low setting unless you are a total geek

^^ Hmm I am sorry but I disagree totaly, Winnies OC's better + 2 yrs down the line Socket 939 may have been obsolete since long.

?? Huh elaborate please...
