Is there a really noticeable difference? GTX 260 also has ~900 MB RAM.
 
So if i have a lower resolution monitor i am better off buying a lower card like 9800gtx than a 260..:S
or i have to just upgrade the monitor:huh:
 
^ to utilize full potential of 4870/260, you have to play games beyond 1650 resolution.
Even 9800GTX/4850 will be an overkill at 1280. If you aren't intended to play games beyond 1280 res, i'd reckon you HD4830 @ 8K. Nothing beats it at its price point.:)
 
I am not satisfied with my 4850 even on 1280x1024.

Crysis
Runs on High with shadows on Low. Far from maxed out. no AA

Farcry 2
Runs on V High and not on U High even on 12x10.

Simcity Socieities
Far from maxed out.

Caesar IV
Med settings on a 9600GT

UT3
Vista has drops even at 12x10 without any AA

Undercover
Isn't consistently 50+ FPS even at 12x10 4x AA

COD5
Acc to benchmarks will just be fine at 12x10 no AA

How many more titles do you want me to name?
 
^ thats what i'm saying. At 1280, games become more CPu limited..Your biggest bottleneck is your monitor..:)

Don't tell me that I will get increased performance by raising the rez. That never happens, even I know that much.

Secondly, a C2D @ 3.5GHz can not really be CPU limited. I am more GPU limited than CPU limited.
 
I have never ever read of a 4850 underperforming that much...
I reckon that it may be some other thing that may be limiting...
All i can say is that your experience is very peculiar....
 
My experience is supported by benchmarks too. A 4850 only seems that much.

To play Crysis 12x10 MAX no AA I doubt anything less than a GTX 280/285 or R4850 X2 would do.
 
I beg to differ with that..
my friends stock 4870 512mb..
with e8400 at 3.4ghz and 4gb corsair 5-5-5-5-18 does play it maxed out avg 29fps..
its easily playable...:ohyeah:
it frames only when he runs to a new territory...
i guess that is more concerned with his hard drive being limited.
his power supply is the ultra stable corsair vx550

I'd vouch for the HD 4870. CF boards are cheaper as well, just in case. ;)

Well, like I said before the difference kicks in when u've a 22/24 incher LCD. U've a 22incher as I've read it from ur rig gallery. So take ur pick. :cool2:
 
+1^ .. I was extremely happy with my 8800GT when i had my 17 incher widescreen, thinking that i had one of the best graphic cards ever and would actually accompany me for alteast a year. :lol:

The moment i got a 22 incher, my 8800GT started to act like a 4670 :lol:

definitly there will be a performance drop when u will switch to 22 inc. for a 8800Gt . that will be like putting a car on the back of a horse.:lol:

8800Gt is still serving its purpose very well for a output like 17inc. no doubt in that whether it be any game. :ohyeah:

Warhead runs fine at 2nd highest setting.. Forgot the name :ashamed: It even runs at enthusiast but lags in intense battles..

I have a viewsonic 1930wm.. and my usual review of my gfx card is that i would have been better off with a 4830.. i never come close to stressing it out except in warhead nd fc2.. now i have to shell out more for a bigger monitor.. which again means my 4850 will be underpowered.. :S Endless cycle :S

EDIT : My dad has LG 22 inchers in his office.. so when i go home from hostel.. i uh.. borrow them for gaming at home.. :ashamed: that's how i got the 16x10 figures :S
