Need Opinion on the W950i

I saw this phone(W950i) with a guy in the crowded mumbai train....and it was love at first sight...I inquired about it and they say its available only in the grey market :(

Oh look!! http://www.techenclave.com/reviews-and-previews/sony-ericsson-w950i-a-review-99847.html well, here's a link of a review by someone named Sourav who apparently has one of these!! And as the review goes, he says its reasonably good in all it has to offer.

Great screen, fantastic walkman, great sound, reasonable battery life, more than sufficient on board memory for most people, etc etc. Ya sure, it doesnt have a camera. And there's no wi-fi either. But it will easily open all your webpages, play all your songs loud enough with thumping bass, and will also play loads of videos , which look pretty good on that 2.8" 262k color screen. For 10ks then? Sourav would say, a steal deal :ohyeah: Yes there are varied options available in the market, but if you say its love at first sight, well mate, you don't need to look further :)

as u can see all the facts u mentiones above are just "specs", they dont tell you how good or bad a phone is....

Dont buy it , bcause

1) UIQ is pain to use, esp because tehre are no softkeys here...
2)lack of support, Se have stopped updates
3)Low amount of Ram, leading to "out of memory" messages

Other options which you mentioned (W910i, Iphoneare far better then this, but ofcourse more expensive...
I will suggest this model

Costs around 15k

Pro's

1) slim and small- just 10mm
2) Walkman 3 player
3)supports all latest network standards like edge, hspda, 3g (although I guess It is quite useless here)
4) 3.2 Mp camera and a decent 2 inch screen, the same size as K800i and K810
Cons

1) No flash, No AUTOFOCUS
2) buttons though improved from previous models, still quite fiddly to use....

No Flash and No Auto Focus in a cell with a 3.15mp cam is wierd..

W960i is out why you are still looking for the old version ?

cause W960i costs 25k way beyond my budget.....I am looking out for a phone with a big screen ...music......and a decent cam ...budget 10-12k...i have the option of stretching my budget....but i would prefer not to....i rather buy the iphone for 17.5k...than a mediocre phone at 15k
 
w950i offers a great bang for the buck, I bought mine around November. It has an exceptional battery life and obviously great music playback. And you'll fall in love with the touchscreen.

If you can lay your hand on this phone, then go for it!
 
Please specify the budget. You post is kinda confusing ;)

W950i is a very good phone. At 10K-11K, it's a steal. If you live with a phone-cam, go for it. Also, see if you get it from online stores like sify...they might offer you a vendor warranty.
 
One last querry ...I have read that the phone is kinda slow.....especially while listening to music and sms'ng...how true is this statement ?and what abt the handwriting recognition ? I have read that its total crap

The phone does get a bit slow while playing music. It's not something you should be looking at if you intend to multi-task. Sms'ing isnt slow. But there is a catch in this. This phone has a task manager like most up-market phones nowadays. So, if you keep a lot of stuff open then it does slow down while opening messages and all. The RAM on this is just 64 MB, which is a tad less. and you will get some 22-23 MB usable RAM while using the phone. I prefer keeping the messaging application open all the time. Messaging is a breeze then :).

Handwriting recognition isnt great. It doesnt recognize words as such. Only characters. So, if you wish to write full words, its not gonna work. But, there is a feature called next word suggestion. Example - If you are writing "Where are you" and you type "Wh" it will automatically suggest the most probable words starting with "wh". And when you select "Where", it automatically suggests the next word as "are". This is actually a learning application. Whatever you write, is remembered by the phone, and it suggest all the possible words whenever you key in a particular word.

I should also tell you that the application support for this phone isn't that great. Yeah sure you get normal applications like Google maps, Divx player, IM client, Control Freak( to control Winamp|Desktop via blue tooth). But honestly, i haven't quite needed anything else :). Updates can be found regularly from Sony Ericson's website.

I am trying to fit a phone with a big screen and music capability within 10k...max12k.....if i have to put in anything more.....I guess I would get the iPhone.
 
The iPhone's capabilities as a phone-cum-multimedia device are almost impeccable. The screen is just awesome. So is the interface. However, if you are willing to spend upto 12K, then the W950i is great bang for buck. No other phone within 12K can offer a 2.8" 262k color screen with 4GB on board memory. Only thing is, the phone is no longer being produced.
P.S - The flash memory on this phone happens to be waaay faster than any other phone with SD/Mirco-SD/Mini-SD cards. It averages a write speed of 8-9 MBps easily in the fast file transfer mode. And, it never slows up even after loading up the phone upto the brim. I'll vouch for that :)
