Innovator
1. Budget.
About 40k.

2. Viewing distance.
Max distance - 15ft
minimum - 8 ft

3. Sources/inputs such as HD DTH/consoles/stand-alone media players etc.

Movies/Music via USB
HD DTH
Local cable feed
Console

4. Preference for plasma TV/LCD TV/LED-LCD TV.
Ans- LED-LCD/LCD.

5. Preference for brands.
Any good brands will do

6. Ambient lighting conditions of the room.
Normal Sunlight during daytime.

7. Any other feature you are looking for such as 3D support on the HDTV, DLNA capabilities etc.
Wont hurt, but not too important.

8. Willing to purchase it from the grey market?
Yup. But not unless the price is drastically different from the available options. Warranty does matters.

Options already available:-

I got an offer for 2 Samsung TVs..
UA39EH5003 - 39" for 29k
40ES5600 - 40" for 40k

Both are out of region units and with international warranty. Indian flag is mentioned on the sticker for warranty.
Option for internet ready tv is not entirely important..

Which of the two panels u guys think is better for my needs ?
Any other panel recommendation is def welcome :)

You will have to play the panel lottery with samsung and hope to win the SPVA panel, avoid the 39 incher as SLCD(SPVA) facility doesnt manufacture 39 inch panels.

With Sony 40EX650, you are assured of SPVA but lose the media player capabilities of samsung.

Thanks for the opinions guys. Did went ahead with the deal and got the ES5600 panel for 40k.
Dubai import, International warranty. Though i am yet to get hold of the bill.. : P

Wall mounting was accomplished for 900/- everything inclusive. Didnt go the Samsung helpline way.
Contacted a guy who had installed an LCD at my place few months back. Cost of the wall mount bracket as he told me was 751/- + taxes.

As it is kinda customary, accessed the Service menu and i think its the SPVA panel. Will mention the steps i followed ( manu1991 )

Procedure:-

1) Enter the service menu:
i) Ensure the TV is in standby mode
ii) Button combination For

UK Model: Info, Menu, Mute, Power
US Model: Mute, 1, 8, 2, Power

*The combo pressing of the button is to be accomplished within 3 seconds.

3) Search for your model's "Type" and note it down. (Better take a snapshot of the menu with a cam)
We basically are concerned with the alphabet which immediately follows the Inch number of the panel.

4) You exit by pressing the power off button of the remote.

Eg: Mine was 40A6AFOE

Manufacturer's key:
A: Samsung
H: Sharp
P: CMI (Chei Mei)
R: AUO (Au Optronics)

Corresponding Panel Type:
Samsung = SPVA That's the kind they manufacture (Samsung and Sony both gets S-PVA panels from the S-LCD company)
Chei Mei = S-MVA
Au Optronics = A-MVA
Sharp = ASV

And btw, the panel types in decreasing order pref vis a vis contrast ratio:
SPVA> UV2A (U-MVA)> S-MVA > A-MVA

Not from grey mkt, a friend had got the panel from Dubai, paid final price as 40k himself and had plans to put this in his room.. but the plan fell through.

Tested the panel a bit, Samsung has made the firmware 1012 fast while navigating.. but few sore points remain:

1) The lag while returning from file playback to menu def doesnt goes unnoticed.
2) The file plays back straight from memory if one had been watching it previously. Earlier the file started from the beginning, and the viewer had the option of playing it from memory if he/she desired so.
3) As if ^^ wasnt enough, the feature of full length skip or rewind by pressing Up/Down button feature has been removed too. :@
4) While skipping, the progress bar doesnt shows up. You are kinda groping in the dark for your desired time stamp
5) No option to set background wallpaper
6) The sound level change is depicted with a full fledged indicator.. Kind of a step back from where they had only the innocuous speaker icon and a dial at the left corner.
7) Plug in a portable (tried 320GB) and it takes an eternity to make it ready for viewing.. Not one bit good.

Come to think of it, quite a few negatives. I hope some setting options are there to go around these :|

Thanks. One thing more, since you know so much about the TV.

Its a pain in the ass to use youtube, web browser etc. using the on screen keyboard. So I was thinking of getting a wireless keyboard/mouse.

The conventional ones are too big and bulky. Samsung has one which is compact but works over bluetooth and costs 6k, seems too expensive. plus can it be used by using a blueooth dongle?

Logitech also has one which is compact but doesn't seem to be available anywhere: Logitech K400 Wireless Keyboard - Logitech: Flipkart.com

Then I found this: Mele F10 Fly Mouse 3-in-1 2.4GHz Wireless Air Mouse + Keyboard + Remote Control - Black - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

Seems to be perfect to me. Cheap. Has good reviews. Very compact. Even supports basic functions like power on/off via IR.

But there is no info on whether it would work. I asked on the dx forum and this is what their support posted:
Hello @manu1991,We are sorry we couldn't find out if Samsung 40ES5600 supports wireless mouse and keyboard on the Samsung"s official website. But it's compatible with your smart TV if the TV supports wireless mouse.
Thanks for your time and patience.

Do you have any idea about whether it'd work or know similar alternatives?

Thanks. One thing more, since you know so much about the TV.

Actually, i only know the tip of the iceberg. All the info i gleaned, has been in the last couple of days.. and unfortunately, i too am clueless regarding the keyboard stuff.
But i had read about the bad experience of on screen keyboard, and you seem to have confirmed it.

I ll try to lookup more info on this, and if i can.. will update in here. But its nice to see the info you posted, good to see the thread turning into more than just a buying suggestion based thread. : )
