Hi,

I need to distribute some content that can be read from a CD only once or twice, any such thing exists. I need to distribute around 1000 copies of this thing. Is there someplace I can order such a thing from. They need to give me they CD's with my content on it.

Are you sending these disks to secret agents like Tom Cruise?

"This CD will self destruct in 5 seconds. "

*Mission impossible theme.*

I dont believe there is a thing like that existing.

It does exist in DVD format. Its formulated by a German based company. But I doubt its local availability.

DVD-D+R
Recordable limited time play DVD

- DVD-D+R is a recordable limited time play DVD
- It is 8X compatible recording speed
- 4.5 Go capacity
- After recording the contend can be made available for only one play or up to 48 hours after it is played for the first time.

This flexibility makes the DVD-D+R able to deliver many different services.
DVD-D, limited time play DVD : The new movie, video game and software rental

The only option is to make what u are sending i.e. the program or whatever self destruct.... how to do that is upto the experts!!

Yeh, u can always encode the content on the cd with a software with password protect, u should program in such a way that after entering password twice, 3rd time it should change password to something else :P and so that the client u have distributed the cd will call u back so u can come to know by this method that the client have watched the dvd/cd or not :D its a nice way btw.

Even if you let the user access it once or twice ,he/she can copy it onto a drive and use it for ever.so this doesn't make sense without some sort of copy protection.

True.. maybe you could enlighten on what exactly needs protection.. and yea u cud do as G@d of w@r said and do it after every single view.. that way before people would realise it the password would change..

This is one of the most interesting topics ever... Self Destructible Cds.. someone should get a patent n start work on it...

Dude!!! i already mentioned, strict encryption such that it cant be copied on hdd :P

Encrypt the data and keep the program on cd. Program should be coded in such a way that it asks for password from user as well as make a secure connection to some website for authentication. You control the website, you control the number of access. Wireshark/dns poisoning along with fake http servers may spoil the sport, but tight encryption may be helpful. Internet access is a must though.

I believe this can be more easily done with some cheap rw media like usb drives ( cheaper one's). In CD, you can't make the program stop access after opening once or twice since ur program won't be able to write back changes on CD ( unless you bundle whole cd burning apps in some way $$$$ ) . Writing changes in OS is a stupid way as it can be easily beaten. Final choice would be some web based authentication or some rw media .

Such thing can only happen in magnetic media drives thus the inbuilt software will delete the main files in a sec or make it inaccesible by means of renaming or moving it and incase of deletion it will not be recoverable by normal user. Thus there by making it unusable. But in DVD and CD's for this purpose will require RW but its time consuming on this form of media and may lead to failure incase the the drive is not RW. Since long the same way was used in floppies and thus it was possible. There was token entry at the time of run making a note of runs and deleting the content on completion of the set runs.
