Hi

I need some help from you guys.

My friend got through the IIT-JEE 2007 exam with a rank of 2754.

He attended the councelling at IIT Madras and got a seat in Biotechnology (5-year integrated cource) at IIT Kharagpur .

Now he is very apprehensive about the following points:

1.How is the field of biotechnology at present?
2.What are the future prospects of it (like in getting good jobs etc.)
3.Specifically,how is Biotechnology at Kharagpur IIT? Is Biotechnology at IIT-M better than IIT-K?

It would be very helpful if some one can provide an insight into theese things!

Thank you for your replies beforehand they are much appreciated :hap2:

Hmm dunno much...but IIT Kharagpur has got an aura...reputation...anyways hope someone answers this...

I thot bio-tech is the "in-thing" now.. though in india its developing slowly, its a great field IMO.. and that too at an IIT..

Reg. this Q

3.Specifically,how is Biotechnology at Kharagpur IIT? Is Biotechnology at IIT-M better than IIT-K?

has he got seats in both the IITs or what?

Congratulations firstly for 2754, I'm still ruing my luck :(

Anyways, the thing with Biotech is its a lotta lab work. Jobs will be excellent, but its a research oriented field.

Prospects are really good, so if he;s set out for research work limited to a lab, then go for it.

Remember though, its hard to find credit in such a field, major inventions are few and far between, so he should be content with local success and his payscale as well as seniority.

With him all the best!

I don't have any specific info about biotech at IIT KGP, but biotech is certainly an "in-thing", perhaps the reason its cut-off's fall low is because its a rather new branch.

If your friend is interested in biology/chemistry, then he should certainly go for it. There would be plenty of opportunities for research, and the IIT-tag would help him a lot in admissions abroad.

But if he dislikes the field altogether, then he would be better off with a stream of his own interest, if he has other good options through aieee etc. What one achieves in those 4/5 years is what really counts, so being in a course which is close to one's heart matters the most.

Did he appear for AIEEE, if yes what's his rank there, chances are he can get a better college through AIEEE, for ranks around 3k in JEE, if one has a good rank in eee, say around 2.5-3k, he might be better off

In my personal opinion, AIR 1000 in JEE is much better than AIR 1000 in AIEEE, BUT

AIR 3500 in AIEEE would fetch better college than AIR 3500 in JEE. That's my personal view.

as far as i know, the prospects at home for Bio tech isn't much. If he does plan on going to the US for further studies, his prospects are very bright, and the IIT tag should help him get to a pretty good univ....

^ I would agree with Shrey, But your buddy has still 5years to go. And im sure things would be lot different by then.

One more thing I feel about these courses :

If a person is very keen on pursuing something like BT from the beginning, he/she should go with it. If one is not sure about specialization, its better to stick to a wider scoped branch of study. You can always do post grad later when you are clear about career goals. Hope he is not in this confusion right now.

dont do biotech from iit, ull end up with a btech which wont have much value anywhere

and unless you are among the toppers, you wont get a good placement for furthur studies either

job opportinities after biotech btech are dismal also, espcially in core fields

leadfoot says that if you really wanna do biotech, better do a bsc+msc which will take 5 years, then try to do a phd like him
