Laptops need some inputs on buying this laptop

A couple of things - I know the seller Aqevitas - he has a huge shop here in Ahmedabad - Tech4Less - http://tech4less.in/

He has awesome laptops but all of them are imported from the US hence the pricing is low. Its like some people on our forums who import iphones from the usa and sell them for a profit.

The two problems you may have are :-
  • some laptops have been in the warehouse/ lying around for quite some time - this results in battery wear - laptop batteries loose the capacity to hold the charge even if not powered on and kept in an idle state. its complicated and boring if you want me to get into the boring bits of chemistry involved in this process. you can google it.
  • claiming warranty for these laptops sold by him - he offers his own warranty for a year.
  • Cisco_tech and me saw an alienware m11x r1 for 27k a couple of months ago with him and we very interested in getting an alienware for cheap - turns out the laptop had no warranty from dell in india or the usa but he gave me his warranty

If you want something good and similarly powerful check this out - http://www.ebay.in/itm/HP431-231-TX-Intel-Core-i5-2430M-2-4GHz-4GB-DDR3-HDD-750GB-HD-6470M-1-GB-/230758597597?pt=IN_PC_Laptops&hash=item35ba48c3dd#ht_1840wt_905

I bought it for my sister last year in august. it has warranty in India and has very good build quality and performance. Even better its similarly priced. It cost me 30k last year.

And add to above mentioned things. Sometime it could be refurbished piece as well. that alienware deal was sure attractive but without official dell warranty getting alienware was bit risky. I would say get the sub 30-35K laptop from here with warranty n all for complete peace of mind.

We asked them at store what if my alienware's charger or battery gone kaput. in how many days will i get replacement ? His answer was it could be 15-30 days. :-O

thanks to #[member='sunny27'] and #[member='cisco_tech'] both of you . very valuable and detailed information given. appreciate it. i wasnt aware of those drawbacks and hassles with imported pieces. . the refurbished part comes as a shocker to me considering that its listed as new but quite a few sellers honestly mention it if its a refurbished one like a few iphone sellers..curious to know , these guys import refurbished pieces too and sell it as new? has it happened to anyone you know?the battery back up part and the other specs was why i was inclined towards getting that particular one. the one sunny has suggested has good specs but the 14" screen is a deal breaker for me . i am looking for something with atleast a 15.6" screen . and normally i never buy laptops without a dedicated gpu , be it even a very basic one but this one had real good specs..now decided to stick to an indian manufactured one itself .can you guys suggest me one in similar price range which has a gpu as well which can play games at acceptable frame rates?

sachin. At once I was about to confirm the deal on alienware but later came to know from my laptop repair guy that tech4less sells refurbished laptop as new.

that's an eye opener ! thank god i made this thread and thank you #[member='cisco_tech'] for that vital info ! now really makes me wonder if i would ever consider buying a laptop from ebay again ! so i guess if he's doing this, a lot of the other import dealers would be doing the same !

Thumb rule - always enquire whether warranty is manufacturer provided, or dealer provided. If it's the latter case (or not provided at all), its certain that the item is grey market, with all the hassles that it entails.

confirmed !!! just checked the comments in the feed back section on the seller's "view shop" on ebay ,turns out that one other buyer has received a used dented laptop when it was clearly listed as new

seller must be reported and banned from ebay ! wonder how he has survived ! i guess one can not make out the differen between new and old until the lappy starts giving some sort of problems. and its opened up . or is there any other way to find out at first glance?
