Car & Bike Need suggestions for a new car.

Hi guys,
My dad is thinking about buying a new car. Maximum budget is 6 lakhs. We want a diesel car and not a petrol car as we all know how much current petrol prices are and how much its going to be in the future. I actually wanted my dad to buy the Honda Jazz but its high cost and petrol driven engine were its weakest points IMHO. So lets see what you guys suggest. :)

Happens sometimes... Likewise, I never like Mahindra... It makes me sick... :(

Neway, then u can look at the Ritz Diesel. Avoid the Swift Diesel as a newer Swift is expected to launch in the coming months.

The Ford Figo Titanium Diesel would fit ur budget as well but Ford ASS is questionable and Spares are expensive compared to it's class competitors.
 
Figo diesel is noisy like a small tractor.. :) other than that it's ok but looking at several reviews, diesel means you can go for swift diesel, highest rated diesel car, in march they are launching the new version so if you can wait. Try punto, FIAT is diesel specialist so they will be good. BTW you do realize that diesel cars have to be driven daily then only they are benefiting.
 
^ Yes, just don't look at the petrol prices alone and make a decision. As a rule of thumb, if you do not run more than 1000 kms per month, you should go with petrol. Economically and otherwise, it isn't beneficial to have a diesel car running less than 1000 kms a month.
 
If its going to be a diesel, going by your initial choice of the JAZZ, the POLO/FABIA TDI, might be appealing.

:( our car won't be running that much. pretty much noob at this but what will happen if we don't drive the car everyday?

^ Ok, in that case you're better off with a petrol car though modern diesels have improved a lot. They cost more to maintain and service. Also remember that you'll be paying a premium of around 1 lac extra over the same variant in petrol for most brands.

You would recover the cost you pay extra if you're running a lot, else the extra amount will not recovered by the time you'll be done with the car.
 
I had a test drive of the Figo Diesel today and its a lovely little car. Sure the interiors are a bit spartan and the engine is a bit noisy, but it ticks all the right boxes otherwise. The following are my findings

- Zero turbo lag for nice city driving experience

- Reasonably light steering at parking speeds that firms up extremely well at high speeds. Very precise and chuckable.

- The suspension is firm but at the same time its very comfortable. There's very little body roll.

- A very positive gearbox that clicks perfectly when shifting.

- No downshifting required for overtaking. I took the car to 140'ish speeds on an empty dual carriageway and it was rock stable with still lots of juice remaining. Should do 160 easy.

- Really nice driving position in spite of the fact that the steering is non adjustable.

- Lots of space all round, doesn't feel like a small car.

- Nice brakes. Braked from 140'ish down to zero without any drama.

This is the first diesel car that I liked and I think I'm getting one soon as my second car.
 
If average is less than 20km running per day, then I would recommend a petrol, else a diesel.

Recommended option list (in this order):

1. Hyundai i20 Asta Petrol 5,80,554 1.2L I-4 (Airbag, ABS+EBD, Alloys)
1. Ford Figo Titanium Diesel 5,49,472 1.4L Dura Torq I-4 (Airbag)
3. Ford Figo ZXI Diesel 5,14,261 1.4L Dura Torq I-4
4. Hyundai i20 Sportz Diesel 6,50,538 1.4L CRDi I-4

Prices ex-showroom Guwahati

First two options are awesome and just depend upon your fuel choice.
 
other than the petrol price what are the other requirements i.e. safety requirements such as single or dual airbags, abs etc

Well i was also in a dillema like yours but i opted for i20 petrol.
Be practical as you are not going to cover the extra 1 lakh cost which u'll be paying for diesel car instead of petrol if your running is not much even though the petrol prices are hiked,you can't burn fuel of 1lakh.
The service and maintenance cost of diesel car is more as compared to petrol.
There are plenty of good options for petrol u may look into that too.

if you dont drive too much better to opt for petrol. My Choice is Chevy Beat get a LT (O) version for around 5.3 L you will not regret.
I drove this car for around 5-6 months now.really peppy and also not small as it looks.

checked out the i20 sportz petrol version today. Nice car. Thinking of buying the diesel version. I20 magna. Is it worth waiting for the new swift?
 
^^ Sure. Personally, i dont like that car, but features wise, its the best VFM car around.

I like Accent, but sold it few months back due to the damn petrol price hikes.(Was running atleast 10000kms per month, think how much money we burnt on it) and currently using Indigo LS Diesel. Bullshit car, with awesome mileage.
 
First decide the following

-Budget

-your monthly run(which would decide diesel vs petrol)

then start looking for options
