I have a Huawei UMG1831 and it doesnt contain wifi radio, its just that the T-mobile connection manager comes with wifi connection management software..

If you get the WiFi + 3G model, then you can access the internet nearly anywhere in the country. The WiFi-only model can connect only at your house , or at a WiFi hotspot (Most McDonalds, Paneras, Many airports, etc.)

Ok I am bit confused here.. what does the modem do ? Make a wifi connection and act as a wifi source.. or it can receive and connect with other wifi hotspots? or both?

well that's in US my friend , In India hardly there are Wifi spots in McD , malls and so on.

The modem can do nothing related to wifi,it works only on 2G/3G and it just has a useless T-mobile software which manages wifi connections through existing wifi connection from your laptop.
