Hello!

My dad wants to upgrade two computers that are being used for general office work (outlook,Word,Excel,Powerpoint,Acrobat and firefox)

Currently, one is a PII and the other is a PIII running on win98
I would like to upgrade these two to Xp running machines, capable of running the above programs for the cheapest possible amount (10K)

Looking to upgrade only the PC and not the monitor,mouse,kb..

Thanks! :)

So basically looking at,

Cpu:Will an atom based rig have enough juice? Or should I look for a slightly more powerful setup? :)
Mobo:
Ram:
Cabby:
and if possible HDD to fit in the budget.. else will continue using the old IDE drives :)

Tia! :)

Go for atom if you are using them as a downloading rig

i would suggest

AMD Athlon II X2 - 240 - 3000

Asus 740G M2A74-AM - 2800

DDR2 Transcend 2GB 800 - 1800

Iball cabinets are decent, looks good - around 900 without PSU

Zeb Pro 350 - 1500

hey!

Maybe I should have specified... 10k for both systems :-s

Was looking at 1gig of ram each (1k each)

cabby=900 each

so that leaves about 6k for 2 mobo/proccy combos... is that doable? or what would the min be?

Thanks! :)

Processor: AMD Sempron 140 - 1.8k(for a bit more power)

Motherboard: Asus M2N68-AM PLUS - 2.3k

Go for this. Will cost you 2k more than your budget but you will have more upgrade options. The Atom will be dead end.

+1

AMD semprons are really good value.

thanks for the inputs..

how easily will the Sempron 140 unlock to dual core? and will there be any noticeable improvement?

Also, at this pricepoint, amd is better than intel?

Atom is a bare minimum for your needs. You wil have only one RAM slot and wouldnt be able to add any HDD's. It is betterr to go for the sempron.

You get a lot for the 1k extra you spend for the semprons like upgradability and enough power which could be enough for you in the next 3-5 years for your basic needs. The sempron is a much better VFM.

No this Asus mobo cant unlock your proccy.

Dude why are you bothering about unlocking, it really doesn't matter in your dad's case. If he's still using Win98 (YUCK) and a PIII, this config is GOD for him. IF you are talking about yourself and regards to gaming then it's probably worth unlocking if there is a method like that.

And no, Intel isn't as good a value proposition as AMD is especially in this price point.

^^ haha.. I was just thinking of the same thing a few min ago.. :P

I just got carried away.. forgot it was for him..

So how does this look?

Processor: AMD Sempron 140 - 1850

Motherboard: Asus M2N68-AM PLUS - 2350

RAM:Trancend 1GB DDR2 800mhz - 1125

total: Rs 5325

Will pick up cabby with how much ever is left!
