PC Peripherals Need vs Greed

I hardly game at all (once in a blue moon) and i have zero movies stored on my HDD,
I do not have much mp3 songs stored too, a hundred or so max of my favourite songs / music , most of them from the 1970's ~ 1980's.
BUT......
Whenever i Game i want the best user expirience that i can afford. i do not compromise on that aspect.

RE: o/c , it has been a habit / passion since last 20 years.and as they say old habits die hard.:)
seriously i find the most optimum o/c for my m/c and stick with that .....i mean i do not o/c by keeping the m/b outside the case , switch on the a/c etc .....i o/c the m/c as i would be using it 24 x 7.
By taking the components to their limits i can judge its quality, and how can i further improve on that...that is what interests me, drives me actually.

by dismantling / breaking things i have learned a lot. but nowadays the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak syndrome has affected me. perhaps it is temporary and will soon pass over.....:D

guys i have a few words about this.

Before in my younger days (when i was single etc..) i would be gaming for upto 7-8 hours a day. there were times when i was off i would start at 8 AM and end at 1 or two in the night.
At that time i had a athlon 1700+ and a geforce 2 mx. that was enough. the palomino athlon was factory set at 1.85 volts - didnt have much room for overcloking at all.

At that time this was enough to play ALL games.

Much before that in 1999 when i had a piii 450 and a sis 6325 8mb card i first tried unreal using some software that let this card do opengl. Believe me it was fun even at 512X384.

since then i have had a rivatnt2, geforce 2 MX, GF MX 440, 5200, 5900 and now im with a 6600GT.

Today I'm lucky if i get 20 minutes a week for games.

But then now i want to upgrade again!
i really like this opt 165 and asrock 939 dual sata 2.

Overclocking was always fun. Still is. so theres the greed part.

even now quake 4 runs just fine with my current 2 year old config at 1024X768 2 xAA 2 xAF. I havent counted the frames but i can play it just fine with no noticable lag.

guys i have an AC fan modded to my box. Its so loud that you can hear it across the room and partly in the next.

but then the reason we are all here is that we are tech enthusiasts.

We love all this.

So sometimes greed does take over.

Like it will, if i upgrade.

And if i dont, theres no big loss. Im sure ill be able to enjoy the next few titles for some time to come.( If i get the time!)

Maybe i dont get the opteron after all, but then maybe i get the conroe!

This is like smoking - habit forming. Jumping from one upgrade to the next is just greed - for most people.

just my 2.5 paise.

regards

Rio..i agree...its the "i got this l337 HD..hah" that drives the need/greed factor.

personally.. i bought my very first gfx card only after joining TE ..not to mention that i do get the occasional pang to raid my bank account and get myself a big budget GPU

Im sticking to my 2 yr old stuff (outdated stuff as some guys put it), bcoz it does everything i want it to do :ohyeah:.
yeah , the "owning the big stuff" factor was what actually drove me into buying my current pc but now i've got over it. NO greed here :)

Well, I also get tempted like hell to upgrade.... why do you think I bought the UCCC and the 6800GT...

But then my budget does not allow me to upgrade too much.... But I have big plans once I start earning.....

Well my pc is almost 2 yrs old now...all i do is download and watch tv shows...and my pc is perfectly suited to for this job :D

But the case of my bro is totally diff...he had got a kick ass rig(we got our rigs at the same time) and just kept adding stuff....he is a Q3 n WC3 gamer...i saw no point in the whole exercise...but he has a totally diff view...fps means more to him than anything else...even though any lame rig today can run Q3 without a hitch!
And now he is in the UK and built a whole new rig all over again from scratch!...now i call that madness!!

I need a powerful MAIN PC.b**ch PC can be less powerful though.

Also i am not a gamer but whenever i game, i need all the eye candy. To me the grafix play an imp role in a game, many argue, gameplay is imp but i am of the opinion, grafix also makes it equally appealing.

Also OCing has been a hobby for a long time now.Cant part with it

I play the NFS series...notthing else interests me...maybe Simcity or Transport Tycoon.

And as far is NFS is concerned...somethimes turning down the eye candy helps gameplay...i mean there are less things to look at and thats wat u need to set good lap times!

well The Vandal nearly went in too....Now thankfully to switchie boy I am safe..
I would probably go for a 7900GT too seems to hit the sweet spot and 24/8 pipees will get my job done and how!! :ohyeah:

I have decided to shelve upgrades until AM2 and conroe make their respective debuts...and prices fall... Good folk here should recall that its better to trail the hardware curve by a single gen then go out and get the best...I used to do that... and still need to upgrade after say 2 years... Infact I am considering selling off 1 rig completely (parents will breathe a sigh of relief at that)

What I mean is in India its ridiculous to jump the gun upgrade wise. A case example will be my speaker range where I've spent nearly 70 grand on 4 speaker sets and the ROI is only audible to my ears...Then come the 2 'expensive' cards...:P

Like I have said earlier its ridiculous...but well we love to do it....
infact I passed up a 7800GT for an N70 and regret the s*** outta my decision...

So we all make mistakes don't we switchy....:ohyeah:
anyways keep those evga's coming I'll be taking the plunge again.......soon!!!

Was just wondering..... Sampsa/Macci, Kingpin and Shamino.....They have all sorts of records for 3D mark..... They have the best configs money can buy..... do they actually game?? :P

:bleh: even if they don't....when u own a ferrari u don't have ta drive at 300 kmph daily right...??:P

there is a difference....... You dont game EVERY SINGLE moment yu are in front of the comp....

Same way, you only take the Ferrari to it's limits when you are in the mood for it ....

My point ejactly....bhai....or should I say 'chote bhai'....:bleh:

for me need and value for money comes first.

i do not see any reason for going places and hoping from one part to another latest.

so i do not spend on pc parts untill and unless i really need it.

regarding oc :
well its a passion to find out the best out of the thing you possess. and in a way it becomes a vfm try too, so eventhough i can not oc because of time and necessity constraints i do not object to avid ocers.

Yeah yeah trying to save your a$$ all you want. Atleast my need for speed isnt related to greed :P Chk out the screenshots thread. :D

blade got a 7800GT ? never knew about it  :hap2: what make? how much did you get it for ? :hap2:

I don't think that's a fair comparison....

The thrill of having a ferrari (or a nice powerful car) comes to you everytime you switch it on and hear it roar to life..everytime you put your feet on the throttle and hear the growl,.... every red light where you can easily take a quick romp leaving every1 behind you...

The point I am trying to make is a nice fast car gives you a thrill everytime you use it...whether you take it up 200 notwithstanding...

A uber-L33T pc will give you the thrill only on the ocasion you fire up a game on it

SO I may not be a boy racer, yet I'll get my thrills almost all the times I am driving my L33T car...

But If I am not an avid gamer, I am not getting any kicks out of my L33T pc unless I am gaming on it, and the thrills will come only THE moments I am gaming...

I currently have a Winchester 3200 with a 6800 (NU)

This upgrade was made over a Athlon 2400 with a 5200...Frankly, I am not getting any kicks out of it, as I hardly game.. And some ppl may want to slice my throat on this blasphemous statement, but the whole damn upgrade didn't make an iota of a positive difference to my computing life...maybe it had the opposite impact as I cld have used that cash for somethng that would have been more satisfying

Around the same time, I also upgraded my 17" Philips CRT (non flat) to a Sony HS95 LCD (19")...and boy, that's an upgrade I can't stop feeling good about :P

So well, I guess end-of-the-day, everyone makes his/her own choices, and what makes me happy might not make another say Goldenfrag happy....

No offence Vandal, But let us at least not make odious comparisons :P

For me, it was purely need. I just got a new rig day before yesterday(and consequently flunked my chem board exam yesterday :P). Until then i was on a six year old Athlon 750 with 128 MB RAM and a GF2 MX :( . I was running Win 98 coz XP used to run so damn slow. Even plain browsing any playing music on XP was sluggish(very sluggish). So u can imagine how much of a diff it made to me. It feels like goin from a cycle to a ferrari :P I used to do all my gaming at cyber cafe's(6-8 hrs a week due to high cost). Now i can game at home. Before this new comp, i used to uprade just for the heck of it(and for bragging rights), spent almost 1 lakh each on my previous 3 comps within 4 yrs. But overall i would say that most people upgrade due to greed and and need both. You definitely have exceptions(look no further than all the people who've replied in this thread :bleh:)
