Hi

Want to purchase a netbook within next 2 days.

My usage would be web browsing, MS Word/Excel and occasional movies incl. 720p. Battery life of 6 hrs. Budget is 16000 max.

Have found the below netbooks on ebay :

Acer D250
Samsung N128/138/140
Lenovo S10-2

Which is the best VFM amongst the above incl. after sales and reliability.

Thanks

I am also planning to pick up a netbook in next few weeks. On Ebay, the most cost effective ones are Samsung models. N128 is really a budget model with no OS and has only mono speakers and no bluetooth. Better to spend a few rupees more and get N138 or N140. They are essentially the same except that N138 comes with No OS. I feel the N138 model would be VFM if you do not need an OS (willing to install Linux or XP on your own), otherwise N140.

Same position here too
N140 looks like netbook of choice -but this one comes with dreaded Win Vista
Home Premium- How to get around this ( legally ) ?

I would have no issues to use the netbook with Ubuntu Netbook Remix. That's why I was considering N138. I wonder if Netbooks would soon ship with proper Windows 7 (not the Starter Edition)!

Wat bout Asus EEE PC 1005ha for around 17.5k ?

I bought this on during the Cybermonday deals and I have to say its a great netbook.

I'm not sure what features it is missing or has that the others you mentioned doesn't have but it works great for me.

I would trust Asus over lenovo/samsung anyways.

yea ...its a great lappy for its price. And i also trust asus more than samsung/lenovo. Thats y suggested this model.

I am using an ACER (with XP home). I am very happy with it. Very portable.

At the time of my purchase, lenovo screen was matt finished. Acer looked better, hence the choice. But my model is a 9" screen with a 3 cell battery. But now I believe that a 6 cell battery is standard along with a 11" screen. My battery lasts for about 1.5 - 2 hours.

Am able to use word, browsing and other applications quite well. (Much better than I expected). Moreover looks more like a diary in a sleeve.

I guess ACER.

Someone mentioned that N140 comes with Vista.. that itself is a big drawback for a netbook. Other than that I feel N140 is comparable to Asus 1005HA. But I suppose Asus build quality will be better - not 100% sure though as have not actually seen both Samsung and Asus models.

I have licensed Windows XP. Can ues that. Is Vista a drawback due to its large memory requirements. Also, any idea how is windows 7 for netbooks. Thanks

Just got a reply from ebay seller who is selling Samsung N-140- he says it is available with Win-XP Home Premium. I guess that solves the problem of Win Vista, i would just like some input on desirability of Samsung N-140 with Win XP Home- will come to 15999 less 500 for coupon that i have.i.e. 15.5k plus 100 shipping. ?

There was some scheme in Chroma in which you got an external DVD-R free along with a Samsung. I wonder if there are any such schemes.

And if you can wait till about Feb, newer Atom based netbooks are expected. They shall have a better graphics and lower power consumption. Moreover you may get better offers when the companies try to get rid of their old stocks.

I suppose Windows 7 would be a better choice for a netbook than Vista. Vista is too taxing on the system resources - and you have hardly any memory/cpu left for running applications. Windows 7 should be comparable to WinXP on a netbook.
