I have had no success with overspeeding of MBI 8x +R media or Edgetec 8x -R with this new BENQ 1640 firmware - when I select 12x in Nero after ticking on overspeed in QSuite 2 the disks burn at 4x. I even tried the MCSE tool for firmware hacking but same problem. I tried switching on/off Solid Burn and WOPC - no luck. Would appreciate any guidance in this regard.....

Do a "Clear EEPROM". Keep Overspeed and WOPC on. Reboot after installing QSuite. Lemme get some MBI discs and try.. next week for sure..

Thanks for the reply. Tried all that yoou mentioned but no luck :(

I have seen the Moser Baer thread at CDFreaks and they seem to get good burns with the same disks at 12x. :(

Someone at CDFreaks mentioned getting better overspeed success by using QSuite 1 - any thoughts on this ?

Got some cheapo 13bux DVD+R 8X..identified as MBI :S

here is the scans didnt understand a bit..burnt at 8X

Here is my scan of the same MBI DVD +R 8X disk. I paid something like 36/- each.

I have also attached a scan of MB's Edgetec 8x -R disk which cost me 21/- each and that looks much worse to my untrained eye. This is FUJIFILM03.

I dont have the foggiest what all those lines mean - can someone please translate them to layman english ?

Here is a burn I just did of an Edgetec -R 8x disk @ 4x

Keep it simple, Eazy. The lesser the PIF's the better. Also having a lower PIF count doesn't necessarily mean that the disc is gonna last long. Try to scan a disc which u've had for abt. 2 mths. and if the PIF count is low ( assuming that the disc was scanned at the time of the burn and had low PIF ), then u cn safely say that the disc is good and is gonna last long. I've had Sony 4x DVD's burnt in an Iomega go kaput within a month though the surface area had no physical damage ( no scratches of any sort ). Also the lesser the length of the spike in PIF, the better.

Also, it's strange that the FUJIFILM03 which is used by Moser Baer in it's -R discs is giving such a wierd scan. All my -R's r the same FUJIFILM03 burnt at 8x and I've discs more than a month old and regularly used give far better scans what u've got immediately after ur burn.

From ur pic, u can clearly see that the MBI, though it's a +R, has far fewer PIF's and lower and very sporadic spikes. That's a decent burn. Try using a MBI -R which am sure would be a FUJI03 and post the scan or scan it for ur own satisfaction and see if it's better than the Edgetech which is also a FUJI03.

here's the same el cheapo DVD+R oversped to 12X.....its a gr8 burn except for that PIF peak in the middle :(

is this solidburn effect? the first MCC01RG20 i burnt was screwed...second had good burns....

same here..i got better results with a 12X burn instead of 8X.....

BTW, i dont have QSuite 2.0 installed...but i had set overspeed and solidburn to on the last time i installed it....

There have been lotsa cases where the burn quality gets better after 2 or 3 burns. Try another of the same disc and see if have further improvements. Gud luck !!

will get more n experiment in that case :ohyeah:

installed Qsuite now...hmmm..look at screenie...learnt 0????

I think u will have an entry in the learnt column when u change the write strategy for a part. brand by editing ur F/W. Not sure though. EEPROM learning enables the drive to burn a part. media in a specific manner to give best possible results. That's the reason TechHead wanted Eazy to clear the EEPROM data to ensure that the laser gets back to it's normal, default function.

@Freaky - THANKS for all the input....I spent a while at CDFreaks last night and have now concluded from the posts there that the BENQ 1640 does not like FUJIFILM03 disks. Sad but true - many people at CDFReaks mentioned having problems with these disks.

I bought a lot of the Edgetec disks only because they were cheap - I think the Edgetecs are quality rejected MB's - darn it !!! :@ After every few burns QSuite2 seems to realise that these are low quality disks and drops the burn speed for these to 4x - then in QSuite2 I click on the EEPROM media information "clean" button and the next few burns are again at 8x !!! BORRIIIIIING !!!! :hap5:

I had some MBI -R 8x FUJIFILM03 disks and here is a scan of one of these..

I have not been able to get an overspeed on any disk and I have tried every trick from CDFreaks forums including hacking the firmware.

SUNNYBhai are you sure the burn was at 12x - have you hacked the registry for Nero to give REAL burn speeds ? Cause when I try to burn at 12x NERO reports 12x burning successful but the REAL burning speed shown during the burn is 4x ...... whenever I try to overspeed 8x -> 12x I get an underspeed burn of 4x - NICE !!!

Took me 6 odd minutes for the burn :) and the LED was blinking faster :P

duuuude...wats with ur av? :O

BTW Eazy, i had probs with -R and 1640. The first MCC01RG20 i burnt was oversped to 8X...if i burnt another MCC at 4X, it simply wudnt burn, Nero gave me an error...it wud burn only if i selected 8X....

Hence I opt only +R from now on :P

6 minutes = 12x burn

The latest 1640 firmware has supposedly made major improvements with -R and -RW disk burning. The FUJIFILM03 and Verbatim disks are not supposed to burn well in this writer. It is the Ricoh and TY stuff which are good but it seems that it is now getting difficult to find TY stuff made in Japan but it is being made in Taiwan and also by MB India !!!

about the Avatar - why do you ask ? ....do you feel you have seen this face before ? ... in a mirror perhaps...

@ Eazy, that's not a good burn. Have to accept that the 1640 ain't liking the FUJI discs meaning that MBI -R's rn't gonna do good on the 1640. So far, all my 7 -R's have been MBI and all r FUJI03. Hope that future firmwares may do something to improve this. Do u get RICOH and TY here ?

The only reason I resisited buying a DVD Writer for the last couple of years was the cost of the media - it is only with the availablity of MB's cheap -R disks @21/- that I felt it was within my budget of burning money ... er... disks..... if I have to spend on buying MB +Rs at 35+ per disk than I will probably stop using the drive. So I am more or less stuck with burning the 100 -R coasters.... hopefully by the time I finish these 100 disks the price of the +Rs will drop to this level.

I have not seen any Ricoh or TY disks in Mumbai and I will not look for them cause they will be so expensive that I would not buy them. FYI I still have with me the BEST CDR disks ever made - the Mitsui Gold 4x - I bought this when I had a Yamaha 4x CD writer and these disks were the BEST - cost 120/- each - and everytime I need to burn a CDR I keep saying NOT NOW only for a special software burn... so I have these disks since the last 10 years waiting for the magic software that needs to be archived till eternity. When I open these disks packing they have the lovely new car smell..... They even smell the BEST. :)

By the way BENQ and Philips are in some sort of partnership on these drives and Philips is a major player in the +R camp so that makes it obvious why these drives handle +R media better.... :)

check out for "Lagoon DVD+R 8X" its the same i usied in the scans....13 rupees only :P

@Eazy : I have original Mistu 24X gold and HP 24X original......nowadays HP media is made by MBI....both blank, never used :D
