From among the two, definitely the XUV.

Save up some more, i.e. 1-2 lakhs more and get an Automatic SUV like Fortuner/Pajero Sport/Rexton/Santa Fe/Endeavour
 
XUV 5OO. If not then Innova.
My friends own both and they are pleased with their performances.
Personally I suggest the XUV 5OO
 
I would select anything automatic, once you go automatic, you never look back.

Age of father? easy to ingress an SUV ?
 
In that case i would highly recommend a automatic elantra.It is very easy to drive and soaks up the holes and rolls really well.
XUV 5OO is amazing as a package but i do prefer a comfortable sedan over it.Just a personal choice.
