Hi folks,

I am going in for a new computer. An AMD X2 4800 or 5200 with 2GB 666 Mhz RAM and an MSI Motherboard (I am going for MSI as the service provided is good - where I live) mainly for running business applications.

Please suggest me a good stable board from the MSI stable. I can spend anywhere from 4000 to 8000 on the motherboard. Is there a good model that can run Vista Aero without the need for an additional graphics card?

Also, I have one limitation, that being I need a 9-pin serial port for a legacy device. No converters please. I need that old classic port.

Also, what is the lowest-price Antec cabinet-PS available? Any good links? The It Depot has very few I see.

Suggestions are welcome.

i'de suggest ditch msi get a Jetway 690G its capable of running windows vista easily also has a good GPU with it.
runs UT3 demo on 45 fps everything medium 800x600 res.
go for it its cheap and good

Go for a Biostar TA690G AM2. Its around 3500 and is the best value for money board. If u dont find this, then go for Jetway JM2A692-GDG.

And if u want MSI, then get K9AGM2-FIH (3k, and no overclocking facility and one firewire) OR K9N Neo-F (3.5k).

Oops, the K9N Neo-F doesnt have onboard GFX. So, forget it. :P

The 690G GPU is the best integrated graphics in todays date. Will run Aero very smooth.

EDIT: One more thing, the rates of 800 MHz ram have saturated, get them instead of 667.

Thanks folks. The Biostar TA690G looks a solid piece of board to me. Also, there is a serial port or header (in those without the serial port at the I/O - so I guess I have to find the correct cable) in most of the models listed here.

The Black Box AMD5000+ -- is it available freely? Prices?

Thanks, hunter, for the update... I think the 800 Mhz ram is still expensive here...Not quite sure...someone said there will be "huge" difference in price vis-a-vis the 667 ones.

@ Ero I have a X2 4000+ with the Jetway board with 2 gigs DDR800 Ram, UT3 demo runs at around 5 fps avg at 640*480 all low, it looks like Quake 1 on drugs!!!

Are you sure of the performance ? The CPU cannot be this big a bottleneck...

^^ No infact Jetway is easily one of the best 690G boards there in terms of features wise, infact one of its feature of hardware troubleshooting indicator is just too good, I have wasted countless days figuring if my gfx card, Ram or proccy is kaput this feature should help in that case. Its just that the X1200 gfx chip according to me is incapable of running UT3, slightly older games work flawless though, just waiting for Dec to order a new card...

I heard Asus is the best one.... infact I think it costs more than other (not that the higher cost makes it better:ohyeah: )

Can we have a comparision b/n the boards mentioned:hap2:

Asus>MSI>Biostar.... Something like this....would be helpful for ppl like me with very mediocre knowledge in mobo's

Heh Asus is the worst of the lot, their low end soln are totaly hopeless.

Most likely Jetway>Biostar>MSI>Asus

Am not too sure of ocing capabilities I am talking feature wise here... besides Jetway just cost 2.8k

You should definitely inquire about the black box edition, its got good customer reviews (@ newegg). It is slightly more expensive than the standard version. Also, it doesn't come with a HSF:S

Asus has poor audio chipset.

GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H is the best & can be OCed and validated by AMD.
I am looking for the same in Delhi but is not available. People in Hyd., Bang. & Chennai have bought it.

Second option could be from Abit 690G. dont have model no.

Third could be MSI K9AG Neo2-Digital.

Go for 800Mhz ram if possible.

ijsa,

Thanks for the Gigabyte suggestion. Looks like Asus has declined since the good old days of the Athlon XP when their boards (and sound quality) was exceptional then.

How much should the 800 Mhz RAM cost for a 1 GB stick? Transcend brand.
