No Mangesh, what i mean to say is that there are a lot of Fake MAxtors floating around. Get the original ones only!
Not sure about model no. Just get the latest.
I dont bother too much about my hard disks except for the space / speed and cache. 250gb/7200.7 rpm/8mb here :E.

What? A fake harddisk? Thats next to impossible as it requires a HELLUVA expertise to make a harddisk, fake or otherwise. What could be happening is misappropiation of model numbers or over charging. I have seen it happen myself. Also, vendors selling old refurbished ones as new. So get a BILL (with VAT and other taxes paid) and you should be good to go. Even if it was a fake, you will get a replacement cuz of ur bill.

I would recommend a slightly deeper thought.

He has been having the sounds since last 2 yrs :S :S So impeding failure is out of question. The HD is 5 years old. When i purchased a 8 GB drive (SEAGATE U8) in 2000 it made loud noises from start. The technology was just like that. Now the drivers use different rotor control techniques and thus produce much less sound (~ 28 dB.)

If he goes for a new harddisk now, then he will have to overhaul his whole system probably. The HD interface which the newer HD will require might not be supported in his MOBO. Hell will befall if his whole comp is 5 years old.

So enquire about all of that. Best would be to get a trusted techie friend to handle the matter.

Otherwise, back up your data (hoping you have a CD-R device) and let the HD run the mill.

Cheers,

Karan

PS: I didnt even read the whole thread before replying as the power went. Now came back and LOL! Guess Piracy has indeed gone to next level. :D ROCKIGN! So Magnesh, what did you buy?

Kidoman : he has a P4.

The poll seems a bit weird. I guess IBM HDD unit was taken over byu Hitachi and there is vast difference between Hitachi and IBM scores.

Well Hitachi doesn't make the ibm deathstars anymore hence the good score ;). Frankly speaking for mid capacity drives, The hitachis are the best deal in the market. All that might change with the arrival of Seagate 7200.9 drives though...

.... just wait for the NEXT lot of Maxtors Hitachis WDs and Samsungs.... they will all release new drives to be one up on Seagates 7200.9.... and the race will go on....
@anupamsinha ... it is simple really... this is from a poll of users of drives - so people are reporting in what they feel about the drives they have used ... for instance I have 2 DEAD IBM Deathstars and 2 fabulous Hitachi HDDs so I would have given IBM bad marks and the Hitachis the top most marks. That is why there is a mention of the Quantums - this company is long gone but people must still be using some of their old drives.

Everytime I have asked any dealer in Mumbai for a WD drive I get the same line from them "WD WARRANTIES SUX" ... I dont know if this is a fact or the guys say this as they dont earn enough on WD drive sales.
