I just got a new 160gb Segate SATA hdd....on connecting the hdd was detected....windows initialised the hdd and then i formated and made 2 partitions.
The primary parition is 20gb others are 80gb n 49gb....

now the problem is that after i installed windows xp on the new drive...after the installation was over and the pc just boots everytime the windows starts...i didnt go past the sliding bar.

I thought maybe the xp copy was bad....so i tried installing windows me.
first attempt at installing windows me...the pc hung the hardware detection stage.
i could install windows me on the second attempt...but after the installation was over and the pc was abt to reboot...the pc hung again.
i just rebooted and i got the windows me splash screen and the pc shut down...and it keeps happening that way only!!

though my older installation of windows on the other hdd works flawlessly and the new 160gb gets detected and i can even copy data...

i am using the Asus K8N4E-Dlx mobo and the i tried the new hdd on the nvidia and silicon image sata controler's but with same result!!

Please some1 help me!!
 
I assume your other drive is PATA ?

If it is then,

The hard drive is fine, i think, you just have to install legacy drivers for your sata contoller during the setup process of XP, you would get a option during the installation, if you want to install raid drivers etc press F2 or F6 not sure, just keep a floppy with the drivers in hand and then install xp.

The drivers can be obtained form asus site. or better still read the m/b manual to find out if you require any specific steps to install a sata drive.
 
Well...i have a windows xp with SATA drivers slipstreamed in the installer...i can install windows xp and windows me on the new SATA drive...but after the installation the OS never boot up...

during windows xp....the pc just restarts and with windows me the pc just shuts down...
 
I tried installing windows me again...like before it again hung at the hardware detection stage....and i got a band of white n black stipes on the bottom half of the screen(got it during the first install also)
Please some1 help!!!

@Wraith .... that is what you need to do... keep the SATA drivers ready on a floppy... if NO FLOPPY DRIVE ... then you are so out of luck :)

i have a windows xp with SATA drivers slipstreamed in the installer...so i dont need the sata drivers during the install....the new sata hdd is deteced and i can install windows on it...but after installation the windows never boots up!!! :no:

the slipstreamed xp works without any problems on other hdd's....

even windows ME wouldnt install!! but the drive works fine under windows which installed on the other drive...
 
So are you installing from within your other OS or you boot up using xp cd and install.

Also, do you need a OS choice menu i.e. do you want the same bootsector for both OS's on different hard drives or you just want a distinct/standalone OS on your new HD.
 
Well its a bootable DVD...i had removed all the other hdd's...just the new SATA drive n the 1650 as optical.....

So i tried a fresh installation....windows xp n windows ME get installed...but after the splash screen the pc reboots in case of xp n shuts down in case of windows ME

All this happens on the Nvidia SATA ports....
 
If xp has installed then try booting into safe mode, as in press F8 on startup to get the boot up choices, maybe a driver failure causing it to restart.
 
^^ will try that....What abt windows ME??

Also there is a known issue of nvidia sata drivers...can u help me with that?
 
Well i am making a new windows installer disk with sliptreamed nvidia sata drivers...can some1 tell me where i can find the drivers??

Coz the on the nvidia site there are no specific drivers....

my mobo is Asus K8N4E-Dlx
 
^^well the site doesnt have specific raid drivers for nvidia....it just has nvidia chipset drivers....

Will have to go thru the manual....
 
Well the problem has been solved...

Got the hdd changed...make a new slipstreamed win xp installer and now things are absolutely fine....i am using win xp from my brand new sata hdd :D :D :D :D :D
 
oops yup this days the prob u described is cmmon becoz of hdd failure...my present hdd was restarting on its own........now i have format 1 drive...and i found it to contain bad sectors...as the files were failing to get copied it used to make a restart.....
 
^^really dont know wat the problem was....coz that hdd was working fine under windows xp...just i couldnt get any os to boot from it....

howevere all my problems have been solved thanks to a new hdd + new xp copy... :D
