Perhaps in response to complaints that sustained use of iPods has resulted in hearing loss - which, of course, must be all Apple's fault - Apple announced today a firmware upgrade for late-model iPods and iPod nanos, which will enable listeners to reduce the unit's maximum volume setting.
To help parents' ensure their children's hearing, the company said in a statement this morning, the maximum limitation will also come with an optional combination lock, so that kids can't crank up the volume on their own. The firmware upgrade, version 1.1.1, is now available for free download from Apple's iPod support site.
