PC Peripherals New RAM, which one after the ballistix 2x1GB DDR500

i had the ballistix 1x2GB DDR500. which one should i go for?

currently thinking about:
OCZ Platinum Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR
500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227225

i read that OCZ can do 3328 timings but hard to push for 250mhz and above. besides, since above sticks are RETAIL (not OEM), i WON'T have to go through the RMA hell with the manufacture but with newegg.

tangential q: what's everbody's avatars? is there a time to change in sync? ;)

Well, try to get RAMS based on the Micron -5BD chips.... They are available in India now :p

Or get UCCC based RAM. They cant do tight latencies at low speeds but can do high speeds..... they are not as good as the Microns but if the -5BD is not available, then this is the one to go for.

Corsair have a series based on UCCC. Dunno which. Wasreading a review on anandtech the other day where they testedthe corsair UCCC RAM.

OT: abt the avatars, we sort of changed it together for 2 weeks. One was bollywood villain week and the next was Star wars week :p Now, it is just random :p

Did your ballistix die? Crucial released 5BF chips recently which do equally well and don't die most importantly. I think Teem Extreem Cronus is based on it.

How about the XMS LL series. Ive read good reviews. The 3500LL performed pretty good. May be a bit on the higher side, if u want cheaper get the regular 3200's.

These OCZ's you mention use Infineon CE-6 chips. Initial batches used to be good, but current batches of these chips dont overclock too well , moreover they tend to show random instability in 3D apps.

ocz 2GB pc3200 rev. 2 based on Samsung TCCD memory chips. what Micron -5BD chips RAMs? any suggestions?

There are no 2GB kits designed with TCCD chips. AFAIK TCCD chips are not designed for higher capacities of memory, hence they were limited to 1GB kits. The PC3200 EL Plats Rev. 2 with TCCD are the 1GB (2 x 512MB) kits.

Micron -5BD chips are the ones used on the Crucial Ballistix you have ! :p

^ The GSkill 2GBHZ pair zhopudey mentioned above is based on Samsung UCCC chips. I have heard good things about those as well. FWIW, a pair of these on the limited run DFI Venus boards reached DDR 620 speeds ;). Your results will obviously vary, but it just goes to show what you can expect with the GSkills.

P.S: Why the upgrade from the Ballistix? Unless your pair has died, the Ballistix are pretty much the cream of the crop! In which case, you could RMA and hope for the -5bf chips that Chaos mentions.

yeah, that was reason ballistix was suggested that they OC more than the OCZ. 250mhz is hard to reach. they dont like above 2.8v. i dont know about the random instability in 3D apps. might delve deep later.

yup, 2X512MB. overlooked that.

hahaha, i just found that out too just now. but TE says Micron mT -5B G? :hmmm:

i'll look into this. thanks!!

yeah they are dying. at 2.8v now for 200mhz :hahaha:. it was stable at 2.6v a month back. it's been 3months now. i got them on 12/2 (296/-). i'll speak to crucial on monday banking hours. newegg is not giving me the replacements as the ones that i got are OEMs i.e crucial. :hmmmm: in all nice post. (Y) thanks chaos too. i'll speak to crucial accordingly on monday about the Micron -5BF chips.

i called up crucial and went through the RMA procedure. now, my next step is to ship them my current ballistix which would be tested for degradation. upon the results, a new pair (or the same pair) would be shipped back to me.

so, which test can i use (except memtest86) to be sure that the current pair tests bad at 2.7vdimm at least if not 2.8vdimm before i ship to them. initially, the sticks worked fine at 2.6vdimm, then 2.7vdimm and now currently at 2.8vdimm. i had to increase the voltage for the stability of system else it would give me frequent BSODs. i've been using SP2004 to test CPU and RAM. Super PI Mod (v1.5 XS, 2006/03/14)?

i did ask the RMA rep which sticks (-5 BD or -5 BF) do they ship now and she didnt have an answer. how do i know if my current bad sticks are -5 BD (or -5 BE maybe) from the below numbers? i.e. how would i know if the shipped sticks from crucial are -5 BF from the numbers on those sticks?

CL1115V.61

56278

BL12864Z503.16TD

or would someone at crucial let me know?

anyways, at the below link "Truckchase!" does mention about testing the -5 BF ballistix sticks that he got as replacements from crucial. see post #1119.

EDIT: the new sticks have BL12864Z503.16TD1

^ Thats some good info you've collected! :)

However a couple of posts later, another member AceGoober mentions he's having the same problem of upping his volts to 2.8v to get his pair to boot at stock settings. So guess all -5Bx chips are cursed !

I feel sad for Crucial - their first foray into the enthusiast memory market and it did not turn out too well.

"if the TD1s go bad, then it's really pathetic on part of crucial."

i found that superPI is failing for 512K all the times, sometimes for 256K. this is at 2.8vdimm. i'd dive into RMA hell by the end of this week.

he still has to do some testing. waiting on his results. i haven't send out the chips yet to crucial but i would go through one RMA cycle and that's it. if the RMAs go bad, i'd ask for replacements from newegg and/or refund from crucial, in that order.

PS: anyways, i need a break from my MACHINE. everything happens for the good. someone said, do one thing daily that scares you. i think it should be, do NOT do one thing daily that you do normally.

currently ballistix in RMA process to newegg (estimated delivery 3/21). probably newegg would give the TD1 (-5 BF) chips in replacements or offers from the RMA dept. (as newegg actually doesn't have any ballistix). let's see.
