Graphic Cards New to 4870 - Help with temps

Guys,
I have got a 4870 card now and testing the temps, i have got

@ Stock speeds
At default fanspeed (24%)
Idle 68C

At fanspeed (50%) with ATI Overdrive
Idle 48C
Load 55C :O

I have run Vantage and Games trying to stress the card, but the temps dont go beyond 55C, is it fine or any screw up with the sensors
the Q becuase i have seen load temps varies greatly to idle, in many posts on 4870

AFAIK the 4870 does heat up on IDLE quite a bit. I would suggest, you let the card manage its own temps. This will ensure that the Fan noise remains minimum.
 
Where are the experts when i need them
Please comment on the temps and let me know if they are fine

Update:
I have reduced fanspeed to 35% and the idle temps increase only to 52 C :ohyeah:
Its a lot more silent now than @ 50%

- Download and install MSI AfterBurner

- Set profiles for 30% fan speed, 40% and 50%

- Select Profile 1 for idle, and the other two according to the temps and games(50% for heavy GPU games)

Also, you can try to edit using RBE the idle clocks for core and memory and reduce voltage, this should reduce the power consumption and temps too by a lot.

I've too reduced my GPU Voltage via MSI AfterBurner to 1,049V from 1,088V and the GPU is rock stable, however I upped it to 1,062V just for stability's sake and not to push my GPU too far.

I'm looking forward to the new REB version which supports HD5800 series. I'll try reducing voltages at other modes (idle, and 2D) to reduce overall power consumption.

madnav - good to hear that :)
 
you can edit bios for lower 2D clocks with RBE.

but that totally depends on what card you have and what 2D clocks it already has.

use gpu-z to extract the bios of your card and upload it so that we can have a look at the bios and bring down 2D clocks and voltage for power saving with your co-operation.

Those temperatures are just fine. No need to do a thing. Game on..! :)

I have downloaded BIOS using GPUz and loaded it with latest RBE, please see attached screens. Help me with the best settings :)







 
1st you will have to test the settings on your own with AMD GPU CLock Tools...without having to flash bios and check.

it seems RBE is already offering 'Decrease Voltages' under superior Powerplay... tick it..

also under fan control..

your fan is set to start at 50c...

drag that starting point to (10,10) on graph...

the 100% point can coinside with (100,100) on graph... thus fan speed will be linear and your card shall idle around 30c-40c range if both fan and voltages are fixed.

The default clock/voltage settings under 'Clock settings' tab seems very bad... your memory might just be a voltage hungry one.

the 'Clock info 01' are for 2D clocks..

My HD4850 (reference design) had default 2D set to 500/750 @ 1.046V

i have changed them to 160/500 @ 1.006V

4870 is also based on RV770 so 2D clocks for core in the range of 200 should not be impossible...
 
First save the default bios, better keep a copy of that...

u can bios flash ur card too using say a ASUS HD4870 TOP which implements low clock feature as well as higher clocks(800MHz+ core and 1GHz memory)

It says u havnt connected the 6pin power...have u connected 2x6pin to ur gfx card?

try changing the voltages at 500/900 to 1.143V it might do some good, and reduce the clocks in all the 500/900 to 400/600 and check if the card is showing lower idle temps...
