How much can this system be overclocked?

Amd 64bit 3200 Winchester
Gecube Radeon 1900XTX
Asus A8N E
1gb X 2 dual ch Transcend ram

How do I overclock?

If I get some problems after overclock, can I restore default speeds and make use of warranty or will warranty be lost?

What is the chance of spoiling the hardware by overclocking?

Do I need to overclock this system to play games like FEAR and Quake 4 at
1280*1024, maxed, 4x aa and 16x af?

Overclocking your system, depends on the Stepping.

Its a Winchester Core first of all, so dont expect it to give you 2.5/2.6 Ghz...

Maybe 2.3 Ghz.. 2.4 Tops, if you have a really good stepping.
Stepping can only be seen on the CPU, not thru any software.

If anything goes wrong, which im sure is bound to happen in your case, you can just reset the motherboard jumper and go to Stock settings.

The hardware life does get shortened by overclocking, but by hardly anything. Way beyond out upgrade cycles, atleast we behind mine :P.

I feel sorry for that imaginary X1900XTX. Being bottlenecked by a 3200+.
Good buy .. Really !!

You are soooooo wrong!!! :|

My CBBID 0501 tops out at 2.45. Many others on TE have done much more like 2.8 on their Winnies.

EXAMPLE: Bottle and Darky.

I think the worst you can get is 2.4 or so.

That is the minimum..... If you have a good stepping, you can go much higher.

And Bottle did 2.7 on his A8V delx + 3000+ :ohyeah:

Multi = 9, and FSB = 300(the max A8V supports :P )

How much you can o/c will also depend upon your PSU. And I don't you'll need to o/c for FEAR or Q4. For Oblivion, maybe you'll need to o/c.

I have Asus A8N E, how is this mobo for overclocking.
Can you please tell me how do I have a look at the stepping and how to do the jumper and all?

Also, I have stock cooling.

How to check multi and fsb, please guide.

PSU: Antec SP500

Everybody at anandtech is almost convincing me to overclock for FEAR, is it really necessary?

is it possible to overclock the cpu without overclocking the ram? i don't think that ordinary ram can be overclcoked much.

please help me.

have you ever hread of amd 64bit cpu, ram or motherboard failing due to overclocking?

hmm that's a good enough mobo to overclock your 3200+ .. but dont expect great overclocks on it as compared to the DFI..

for the stepping's you'd have to remove the heatsink and chk it.. no other way

most rams would over clock upto 220 mhz.. i think that should be enough to play fear !

go into the BIOS to chk your fsb/mutli... .. and overclock through your bios in small increments...

please help me.
Normally its you who help`s us . after a hard day at work/college... reading your topics is a delight! attain instant nirvana

NO. but we would like to see... afterall you love kaput stuff dont you?

What is the percentage of hardware fauilure after overclocking?

If I restore defaults then will I get warranty?

Is it possible to overclock to 2.5gz but keeping the ram at 200mhz, how about changing the multiplier?

Should I leave jumper and heat sink portion to my dealer, who assembles computers?

How did those Asus boards do 2.7 ?

^Search for guides on overclocking. you are asking too many questions without doing any work yourself. O/Cing is more or less idiosyncratic to hardware and you have to find out what your hardware is capable of.

Firstly get A64tweaker and read a guide to BIOS overclocking on an A64 system.

what does idiosyncratic mean?

I downloaded the software, what do I do with it and what means what?

you like your dealer that much that you always leave your things with him ?

u mean the chances of a CPU going -=kaput=- during ocing ?
hard to tell...normally under observed conditions it is 0.1% going kaput...however i'm not so sure in your case....

If I change my speed to 2.4ghz, can I reduce it back to 2ghz to get warranty?

Do I need to oc to play FEAR and Quake 4 at those settings?

Asked my dealer, he can handle the warranty?
Now, do I need to oc?

Can't I just chnage the multiplier to 12 instead of 10 and that will make my cpu speed 2.4ghz?

hmmm... Or you can just put a clock over the CPU and it becomes CPU Overclock ... But remember not to set the alarm on the clock otherwise your proccy may go kaput and your system will crash...

switch, please be serious.

Ok, I know that the multiplier can't be changed, then how do I overclock the cpu without increasing or decreasing the speed of the ram. Does Asus A8N E support memory dividers.

How high can I take Transcend 1gb X 2 UCCC chips, how about D43 and how about ordinary chips.

^^Yes it supports dividers. Set the divider to 166 Mhz and you will be fine. OC'ing to 2.4 will keep memory just about at stock.

I didn't understand, if I keep the speed at 166mhz how will it perform at 200mhz?

Do you mean that I should keep the ratio as 2:3? how to do that?
