Actually both method leave the excess to spread off the surface, while the next priority to cooling should be that the compound shouldn't pour off cpu to socket.

IMO, the line method is the best.

The pea method is the same style arctic recommends. Anyways good info.

The air trapped has absolutely nothing to do with the style of putting on the grease but how were the two surfaces lapped. And the line method is always better than pea method for multi-core proccessors.
