Nintendo on track to sell 4M Wiis by year's end?
Intimidating Nintendo bossman with a friendly smile, Reggie Fils-Aime, told Reuters today that his company is on track to sell 4 million Wiis worldwide by the end of the year. If reality, that would be like selling almost 20% of the GameCube's 21M install base in just over six weeks (!).

The gaming exec also expects to sell a 'lil something extra on top of the planned 4 million, manufacturing constraints permitting. And I quote: "Exceeding (sales targets) is going to be challenging based on manufacturing capacity. We will sell everything we make so now it's simply a manufacturing thing."

Safe to say, Nintendo's best time since the N64 went down. It'll be interesting if it can keep this pace up 2 years down the road.

I am really surprised that Wii is a hit among gamers.....I had seen a small gameplay clip of Call of duty (2 or 3) on gamer.tv some days back.....The graphics were pathetic to say the least...I could see so many jagged edges on the screen.....I guess for some ppl graphics aren't that important but wen u have options like X360 and PS3 to play the same game, why wud anyone go for the Wii version of the game???

Many have come to the conclusion Wii isn't even competing with the other two. Its being driven and for a totally different market, most of the Wii's will be coupled wither with a Ps3 or an Xbox 360 sooner or later.

I can see 2.5 million easily by the years end and maybe 3 mill but 4 mill sounds a bit too much. The Wii has already sold 600K units in the US and has yet to launch in Japan(Dec 2) or Europe(Dec 27) so I see it hitting 4 million somewhere in Jan next year.

For the reasons that you conviniently left out.

I on the other hand will say that when you have Wii why will one go in for Xbox 360 / PS3... Just for better graphics cause you cannot win from Wii in terms of game play...

Evecandy is not everything when you have a pitcher full of beer and chicken wings on table and friends by your side... Trust me Wii will win that battle over PS3 and 360 11 out of ten times ;)...

I do agree that gameplay is an important issue....All games that are specifically designed keeping the Wii controler in mind will surely bring in a new experience....But I am talking abt games that are available on other platforms also....

Take an FPS/TPS for example.....I would prefer sitting on my couch and playing comfortably, rather than moving my hand vigorously to move the cross hair on screen using the Wii controller....

I would ceratainly prefer the traditional Xbox or PS controller for that....

I also wonder about the Wii in a couple of years... but I think they might make it... for other reasons. I think that in two years time, the Wii will be dirt cheap. And I do mean dirt. Then people will buy it as a cheap toy. Everyone will have it. Nintendo will make money. Look at it this way - Lego is low tech (for the most part, I know they have some high end stuff), most of the kits are cheap. And they make huge profits. As compared to Sony (which looks in trouble), MS (which made no money on the XBOX) and Nintendo (which just about did nothing on the GC... saved thanks to gameboy once again).

Ultimately, it's not about market share, it's about the share market.

Hey, that sounds cool.
