Digital death: US camera pioneer Kodak files for bankruptcy.

S camera pioneer Eastman Kodak, which brought photography to the masses over a century ago, filed for bankruptcy early Thursday.

"After considering the advantages of Chapter 11 at this time, the Board of Directors and the entire senior management team unanimously believe that this is a necessary step and the right thing to do for the future of Kodak," CEO Antonio Perez said in a statement, referring to US bankruptcy proceedings.

The company, which dates back more than a hundred years, was a pioneer in popularising photography. But it has been struggling to keep pace with the digital age and years of poor performance had already forced it to lay off 47,000 employees and close 13 manufacturing plants since 2003.

In its heyday Kodak shares topped $80 in 1996 -- just at the outset of the digital photo revolution that eventually replaced the need for consumers to buy Kodak film, once a virtual monopoly in the US market.

The bankruptcy filing places the jobs of Kodak's 19,000 remaining employees in question. At its height in the 1980s, it had 145,000 workers.

this news really made me nostalgic.

my first camera was Kodak KB10
<
- bought during school time.

Kodak had sued companies like Apple and RIM as well apart from HTC and Samsung. So its not they were suing South east Asian companies only.

I think you did not get my dig at which company I was talking about.

Anyways , Will remember Kodak for that first camera that our family had.

^^ Oh, I did get it alright, I am just saying that Kodak was been suing companies left and right indiscriminately just like the company you are referring to.

You got alright mate !

It was a desperate measure from Kodak . Selling patents off and suing was a last ditch attempt to rescue the company.

My frend just got axed from kodak.

They all were betting on patents.

But i guess all its patent relates to photographic film which in these days have no value in memory card world.

I still have kodak digital camera bought in 2004. Though lags behind many digital camera in terms of performance but certainly nostalgic about it.

And those ADS which came when a person was in GYM and the photographer says Kodak...and then he poses for photograph!

In 15 years from 31 billion dollar company they become 150 million dollar company.

They themselves have to blame.I still remember i guess in 2007 i still used to get those camera rolls And i guess already ipod had entered the market. They should have migrated.

They have 5 billion dollar assets and 6.5 billion dollar liabilities.

They will get time to settle.
