@smnrock

Whatever you said is completely Greek to me. Also I have no clue I my tv has HDMI cec or not. Any video you can link where I can see this in action ? Also what hardware is required for this ?
Edit: you said rpi which means raspberry pie I suppose.
Not really enticing for me. If it was for me only I would have given it a thought.

As i said, RPI takes very little time to make the initial setup and that also very easy. If you can complete that part than your dad can use that as like any other regular TV/Smart TV function...This is how my family is using and we dont even use the TV\s smart function at all now. CEC is nothing but, controlling the RPI over the HDMI connection using the TV remote control itself. Anyways after all its your choice.. :D

How about android stick?

Planning for one which costs around 4k on ebay..

Yes that is being considered. But with so many options and many of them are just junk, I am bit reluctant. Can you link me to which exactly have you drilled down to ?

Also Teewe thing, If anyone has read more into it please clarify my doubt.
It seems that Teewe streams stuff from mobile/PC to TV or it just hands-over like chromecast to the stick attached to TV ? Because from the looks of it, it seems that the phone/pc needs to be on for the time you play stuff on the TV. You cannot just say shut off the phone once the video starts on TV.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Even I am thinking of one similar device to make whole TV experience smarter( TV wall unit construction in progress), and have that android stick in mind... With local internet (no FUP) in my area which provides 30 mbps youtube / google sites can utilize the stick for youtube (HD content), download torrents, browse, light gaming etc.

I think you are right about Teewe thing it will keep the device on, that I don't find at all comfortable.

Nothing specific but links here and here....

If the device needs to be on, then one may be forced to get a netbook/chromebook/low power device to keep the stream on?

Set-up & simplicity in usage point of view, I would still recommend WDTV Live or similar device.

i also think this option is the closest and should be explored further.

android stick is the right idea but its under powered and unreliable.

Yes that is the reason android stick is not top of the list. WDTV Live is a good option yes but its functions like playing from HDD / USB etc is sort of not useful for me. I already have a media box for that. I will be keeping an eye on how this Teewe thing pans out.

Ah but it lacks youtube. So either you get rid of it and go with wd tv or you get some chromecast thing.

Precisely. It actually does have YouTube but the functionality is broken.
My dad has got used to this so no plans to change as it also works fine. Also the HDD is internal and with wdtv I will need to attach HDD externally.

Btw a member of the team that built Teewe is active of the India broadband forum. I had asked him few queries about the device over there. Cannot link the thread as am on mobile.
But he did say that the streaming is handled by the Dongle after we start on the tv and we can shut off our PC, mobile once streaming starts on tv.
Only for local content the source device needs to be ON.

Right, now how has that happened ?

Chinese media player. But product quality is good. At that time streaming wasn't really a concern.
You know what, at one point, one could actually load the ACRyan firmware on this player. Not possible now.
It has Youku support too. I haven't checked lately on youtube. May be I shall try this weekend and I see.

This is what I have -> http://www.ecvv.com/product/2217219.html

I also have an external Toshiba DVD writer hooked onto this player as it supports that too. But anyways DVDs are passe now.

This is exactly what i was getting at. When you bought it presumably youtube was ok now it seems not to work anymore.

How/why did that happen

If you can make it work then you don't have to buy anything at all.

No it hasn't been working properly right from day 1. Infact the initial factory firmware did not even have youtube. It came later on.
I shall try this weekend and see if it works.

I have this Asus R1 media player, on which there were few online things like Online TV etc which never worked... Sometime back changed its firware to ACRyan/Asus R3 but still youtube functionality didn`t work as expected... Don`t know how WD Tv works in terms of youtube... The Asus R1 is lying unused !
