guyz I got an E6300 + MSI P965 NEO / Trasnscend 1gb 667 yest.
Everything went fine until I discovered no matter what i play, from what i play like WMPlayer, VLC Media Player Classic, there is no sound coming from the motherboard.

installed latest Audio RTL HD 1.51 first, no luck
installed drivers from the MSI Cd, no luck.

Clean installed XP again, installed from CD - no luck.

checked the bios & it has only one setting to enable or disable Onboard sound. nothing else.

possible sound chip failure
Anyone else faced this with a new P965 neo ??

Bios is latest rev1.5

What type speakers do u use ?
Some speakers have aux / 5.1 mode .. change between them

and did u install Microsoft HD Bus Driver?

I'm using regular 2.1 speakers (altec avs300 I guess). in the realtek drivers i have it set to 2speaker mode. I even tried setting it at 4/6 speaker but still no sound at all. checked with 3 different headphone & with my stereo as well.

You may have selected Digital Audio mode, select Analog output.

most common mistake there should be a box with digital output checkmarked , uncheck the same:hap2:

there is nothing like Select betw. SPDIF & Analog. Check the attaced pic.

can u pls ellaborate where these settings are ur talking abt. I have installed so many other comps with the same RTL HD audio & never faced such problem. feeling the chip's borked, will need to replace the mobo :(

I think you might have turned off IRQ in Bios.... I will tell later what I mean when I go home and go into my Bios.

altec avs300 are pure crap speakers
waste of money dude:rofl:
altec lowend speakers = intex

Tried doing the jumper settings also - tried resetting the Bios but no luck.
I'm taking it back for replacement tommorrow.

@invisibleX --- This is a serious discussion abt some product, it may help people get aware of a possible faulty LOT & try to make up mind those who'r buying it soon. My request to u not to post off topic pls & let thread stick to its point.

-= Problem Solved =–
Probably the funniest thing that has happened to me past some days. It was one of the mounting bolts that was shorting the front panel audio pins from beneath. First time I ever saw a mobo that doesn’t have screw hole at that place, typically the one above PCI slots. Removed the mounting bolt & everything works fine.

Well in detail, I Went to the dealer SMC for mobo replacement today. I had taken my whole CPU so that everything can be checked thoroughly. Without any question, his engineer brought on a new mobo & we checked the mobo before fitting it in & it gave sound properly. Then we fit it in the chassis, plug power-on start & bang, no sound again. Sat for 10 mins discussing & he said may be the front panel Audio connector of the chassis that we connected has permanently shorted the output. Some discussion with his boss & then he finally agrees to fit in a 3rd brand new motherboard.
We did not check it outside this time & straight fit it inside the chassis, check & bang, no sound pffff!!. I just asked him let us now check it loose outside & it gave the sound. This concluded that there is some shorting with the chassis being the culprit. He made me notice that there was no screw hole at the place before the PCI slots but I had a mounting bolt screwed in there. Removed it, installed in the mobo & bingo everything working now. Immediately we called off the replacement guy just ready to take the first 2 mobo’s for his own replacement.
I call it bad design. & sure it is. This chassis is a Chenbro SR11 server chassis that I'm using since 2003, & it has enclosed more than 5 boards since then. I have never ever seen a mobo without a screw hole at that place specially, & on top of that, the idiot designers just place the front audio pins damn exact at the spot.
I’d like to mention that when the audio was not working, the jack sensing was not working also. & now it can sense them fine. I must say the link that lord_nemesis mentioned in the MSI forums is exactly the same prob as I was having & I'm sure 99.9% it’s the same cause. Coz normally when we are mounting the mobo in a cabinet, one always tends to install all mounting bolts on the left side atleast, & that’s the culprit here. lord_nemesis I can’t make an ID on msi forums there, the stupid image validation never works. In case you or anyone else has an ID there, pls reply to it with the above text so as to help others.
Thx anyways for the support.

Hey buddy, thanks for the invaluable information..i have bought the same mobo and was a bit concerned a few days ago when i went thru this thread ...i was worried that it cud happen to my mobo too..now i'll double check the mounting bolt before i fit the board..:)

@mehar,lord_nemesis,ryan :-

Here are the pics of board (from review given by lord_nemesis)

there was no screw hole at the place before the PCI slots but I had a mounting bolt screwed in there. Removed it, installed in the mobo & bingo everything working now.

Can anyone care to pinpoint exact location ...!! :)

Edit:- By mistake i copied the direct links...and forgot the thumbnails...so converting them to only links

Thanx

I fail to notice , but isn't the 24 pin , and the 4 pin power connector in a ver awkward position ?? i mean .. that doesn't look very conventional ..

So for a P965 Neo users .. does it matter anyway ??

As I mentioned in my preview of the board, the power connectors both seem to be in a difficult to reach position, but I did not face any difficulty because of that even though my hands are of above average size. I had this board originally in Zebby Jamaica when I was using it and later I have installed it in a regular zebby Mid Tower cabinet for my sister. did not face any issues installing it in that cabby either.

Also While assembling for my sister I made some washers out of of a plastic sheet and used them for the screws. so I did not face any issues with the onboard sound either. :)

thanks for that people! one of ma ol' buddies was bugging me for very long about this SOUND sound problem!:hap2: :hap2:

as i asked before also - pls if someone is a regd. member at msi forums, post this topic as is for more to know..

from the day i discovered I presumed this is gonna twist many other brains too much. lame designing!!
