Noisy neighbours

I've got these horrible neighbours who stay in the building opposite mine, about 30 feet away. They blast their tv so loud I hear it throughout the day. In the evenings I can make out the dialogue, but in the day all I hear is the constant general din of their tv, and it permeates into every room in my house. I've asked them to reduce the volume, but it hasn't helped at all.
Even if I close the curtains and windows the noise still comes through.

If I watch a movie, or play a song, I've got to really crank up the volume to drown out the noise from their tv.

The constant noise is really getting on my nerves, and I'm finding it really hard to stay at home..and this is a residence I own, so moving is out of the question. I also work from home, so it's really hard to keep my cool when I'm under pressure.

I'm planning on going to the cops, but, I think they've been warned by the cops before, as at 11pm sharp, the noise from their house goes off.

How do I deal with them? Any advice?
 
Try discussing the problem with them, but I'm sure you must've done that and has been a lemon, I'd suggest you goto the cops.

Or get some real loud speakers and give them a dose of what you have to go through everyday, but I'd go with the cops.
 
Hearing sound from 30 feet across is no joke. That definitely makes them eligible for a complaint, since there is a decibel limit in residential areas which can be breached only with prior permission.
 
The cops won't be of much help, IMO. You should first approach your housing society with a written complaint. Try and get other neighbors to sign too.
 
Considering you are in PUNE, print following messege in MARATHI and make a PATI

if you are in an apartment then the society should help , if you are in separate houses , i suggest some nice heavy metal music with directional speakers and noise cancellng headphones for yourself for a week

Translation please :D I guessed some of it should probably mean "Keep your sound to your house, else *not sure what else is written*"
 
keep the noise within the confines of your house or else the noise you make shall be returned and instead of the noise a slap(kaan ke neeche thappad) shall be heard.

heheh my marathi translations skills are somewhat crude now am not a maharashtrian btw.
 
Thanks for the replies. The guy doesn't live in my society, and his flat is probably more than 30 feet away, so his tv is really loud.
But the advice about canvassing my neighbours, and asking my society for help instead of doing it alone is good, and I'm going to take it.

But I've looked up the nuisance laws in India, and I think the max fine is some 500 odd rupees, so unless that guy's got some sort of civic sense, I don't know how good a police complaint will be.
 
have you tried talking the matter with 'their' neighbors, the people who stay above and below them ? you could start of as having a word with them or having a word with the secretary of that building.
 
If they're troubling you then they must be troubling others as well. That is to say ppl in your bldg as well in their own building.

If you can find out who these are, then you might be able to influence things for the better.
 
In india few people have civic sense,my uncle told me that in the US when ever their neighbors have some really noisy guests children,they slip a note to every one in the apartment to bare with them for the night,sorry for the inconvenience and some take a broom and knock on the walls if some one puts a loud music.
 
I had the same problem when i used to live in Pune.This was Long time back.

But i came back with a great idea.

I had some heavy groaning sessions with my love all night.

However it subdued a lot after they complained that they are embarrassed before their children when we went at it nonchalant till dawn.

I think they got the message.Else no amount of request is going to stop them .

P.S Dont this a lot you may reduce your weight too

ok then get a legal porn DVD and then put it aloud. Of course they can't get him arrested for that :P

On a serious note, how about some heavy action movies (specially the guns dha-dha-dha-dha :P) playing all through the day and night? For that day, take your ass to one of your friends home.
