Nokia 6233 : The All Rounder !!
INTRO:
Well well well..look what we've got here..Mr. Lazybones reviewing his new Nokia 6233 phone.. Okay, I know this phone has been around for a while and even during the initial sales, this phone gathered quiet a lot of interest from business users to college goers alike. But the recent price cut has added a new feather to its cap of being a great VFM mobile phone, which is not at all light when it comes to features, and has something to please almost everyone.A true All rounder then?? Lets check out. And since I own the phone, doesnt mean, i'm gonna be all praise for it..I'm going to be as discreet as possible about what i like and do not like about the phone..
First and foremost lets check out what makes this phone stand apart and what makes it go down under...
Positive Points :
A 3G capable phone (Lol, dont know how much that matters )
2 MP Cam
VGA Video recording ( Pretty decent quality if not over the top)
Awesome Twin Stereo loudspeakers
Classy looks with steel frame
Memory Slot with Hot Swap(Supports Micro SD cards upto 2 GB)
Brilliant QVGA Screen (240x320 262k color TFT)
Decent Media player with a wide range of formats supported
FM Radio
Negative Points :
No Auto Focus
No Flash for night mode
No front cam for video calls or better, using it as a mirror..
Cam quality not as good as SE K750i
No cam cover to protect lens
No mini USB port (still have to make do with POP PORT)
Miserly bundle..no data cable included.
Insufficient Internal memory
[BREAK=Looks and Build Quality]
Lets Get Physical...
Nokia sole objective behind the 6233's looks was to,well, make it look serious... with no fancy red, blue or orange colors to spoil the clean lines.In fact the serious "i am all business" looks combined with the use of metal, quality plastic and soft rubberized/velvet touch material makes it look and feel pretty classy and much more expensive than it really is. The steel frame encasing the front compliments the looks very well. The front is dominated by the brilliant 31x41 mm display. More on it later.
Below the display comes the 5 directional D pad and the usual soft keys and the call/receive and end keys on both sides. I must add that the key pad below it is one of the most comfortable keypads i have ever used..the buttons are quite large and the tactile feel is excellent. The backlight color is cyan which is pleasing to the eyes.
Going to the back side, Nokia carries on the clean lines with the back panel design. It has been made of soft rubbery touch plastic which feels very good in the hands and doesnt slip. The 2 MP cam doesnt have any fancy cover, strictly to keep the design simple.It is placed on a black metal strip which is the only saving grace to keep the back from looking completely plain jane.The mirror is placed below the cam..never found the utility of those mirrors..they dont help here either.
Overall, the phone feels very sturdy in the hands, in usual Nokia fashion..no creeks or any other irritating sounds heard.. The bottom carries the usual Pop Port and recharging jack.
On both sides, the small oval grills announce the presence of the loud speakers inside. To the right, below the speaker gill is the camera button. The memory slot sits below the grill on the left side. It is truly hot swappable..no opening battery covers n all that.
The top houses the usual on/off/profile button. If you ask me, i find it very irritating..since i've been long used to Samsung cellphones(2 before this.. ) Why cant nokia make use of the cancel button as an on/off button?? Okay, long time Nokia users..dont flame me..
The phone is a bit heavy at 110gm..but i have no complains..i like heavy phones....this is the also one of the reasons i didnt go for the 6300. It was way too light, too slim and seemed fragile. A bit girly too..:bleh:
The Phone is available in two colors. Silver and Black. Take my word for it. You wudnt want to go for the silver one. It looks way too cheap as compared to the Black one. The Black one is a class apart. Keep them side by side and you'll understand what I'm saying... I had to wait for the black one for almost 2 weeks as it was out of stock, but finally my patience paid off. I got my black 6233 on April 10th..
OVERALL LOOKS : 8/10

[BREAK=Display and UI]
Display :
The display of 6233 is one of its biggest virtues. It produces crisp and sharp colors on the 31x41mm screen. Its a 262k TFT display with a QVGA (240x320) Resolution.
I have put on that sucky crystal cover on it for the time being but even then, everything is readable in broad day light. Pictures look great on it. So go on, use your best pics as wallpapers. You'll be surprised to see how crisp they look on the display.
DISPLAY : 9/10
User Interface :
The phone uses the Series 40 3rd Edition UI which is pretty customizable and at the same time, very easy to use. I had no issues migrating from the Samsung UI to S40. Indeed this UI has come a long way. It may not be as customizable as the Symbian but holds its own brilliantly against other UIs from SE, MOTO and Samsung. There are loads of Themes available for this UI as well. But i must add that there are only 2-3 Themes coming bundled with this phone..So you'll have to download more themes. The Menu icons can be displayed in many ways as a list, in grids and in a tabbed way. People who have used older S40 UI will feel at home.
One great feature to come from the Symbian OS is the Active standby which can be used in this interface. I personally, dont like it that much, though. Nevertheless, its useful. But yeah, you'll miss some apps like PDF reader here. But then again, there is no point in comparing the 2 UI s...Those who need Symbian will go for it..and those who need simple functionality will prefer S40.
Themes : The phone comes with a few preloaded themes. They are all the same ones you see on other current S40 phones. Anyways, they are okay. But the saving grace is that there are loads of themes available for this phone online..so you'd better start downloading.
A good theme that i personally like is the Guitar theme that comes in the memory card. Others are loaded in the phone's internal memory.
Phone Book : It allows some 500 entries in the phone book which may be less for some..i dont know any1 who needs more than 500..:O For me, its still more than enough. Apart from number you can add address, email id, pic and a ringtone to the entries.
Messaging : Its all usual Nokia stuff. Nothing breakthrough here. You get the usual SMS, MMS, Email facility here . Btw, a good thing is that there is no limit of the file attachment size to be sent.
File Manager : The file manager in this phone is very good and functional. Much better and improved from previous versions in 6270 and 6280.
USER INTERFACE :
EASE OF USE 8/10
CUSTOMIZABLE OPTIONS : 6/10
[BREAK=Multimedia Cababilities]
Multimedia :
Music First !! :
The 6233 is the jack of all trades and then master of some.. But, its clearly not a Music optimized phone. So Nokia incorporated a simple music player which lets you list your tracks and has an inbuilt equalizer with all the usual presets. Plus you can set your own equalizer settings if you want. Pretty good. YOu can use shuffle and repeat functions as well. And yeah, you can minimize the player and use other functions in the phone. In minimized mode, the track name and time elapsed appears on the Active standby display. Rest is usual. But if you are looking for enhanced Walkman like functions, you shud be looking elsewhere. But a simple music player doesnt really mean bad quality sound. Infact it sounds very good especially with the graphic equalizer. But the bass is on the low side. But let me add that it has nothing to do with the player. As i confirmed on forums.
The supplied nokia headphones are to blame. Since using the SE headphones with the Nokia adapter (not included in box..the adapter that is..what else did you think, the SE headphones?? Get a life.. ) makes it sound exactly like the Walkman Series phones. So you shud definitely buy the adapter and a pair of good headphones if you are an audiophile.
The player supports AAC and AAC+ apart from mp3,wav etc. So its a plus point.
Video Player : Its a good app for viewing your captured videos and 3GP movies. It allows to skip forward with a minimum of 10 secs. It supports streaming as well. I'm okay with it..not too good..not too bad either.
FM Radio : The FM radio is usual. IT allows 20 presets. YOu have to connect the headphones even if you wish to listen to it on the loudspeakers...pretty common now, anyways..
Speakers : The biggest USP of the 6233 are the two stereo loudspeakers. Sound from the speakers are exceptional. In fact, a lot of sites rated it better than N73's speakers. The phone supports 64 tone polyphony which is pretty good. Mp3s sound very good on the speakers. Trust me, you need to listen to the speakers to believe what i'm saying. You'll hear them in the crowded locations without any problems. Even in the highest volume level sound doesnt crack at all.
Multimedia Capabilities : 7/10
Headphones : 5/10
Stereo Loudspeakers : 10/10
[BREAK=Camera]
Camera :
SNAPS:
The phone has a 2MP cam without an Auto focus. At normal times, pic quality doesnt suffer much. But sometimes you feel the need of the Autofocus for more precise takes. One peculiar thing about this cam is that the software seems to blur out some details intentionally to get rid of noise. Not usually visible in daytime shots but noticeable in the night shots. Anyways without the LED flash, its pretty useless in dark locations. But in lit up places it is pretty decent if not exceptional.
I do not have much expectations from the cam as i'm more used to a digi..so for casual takes, this is fine. Picture quality on PC seems okay. Not too bad. You get all the usual features like zoom, night mode, a self-release timer, and an image sequence shoot mode. Some image effects are also there like sepia, gray scale, negative etc. One bad thing about the cam is that there is no lens cover. It can invite scratches on an unfortunate fall or after long term use.
VIDEO :
What it lacks in snap quality, it more than makes up in the video recordings. Its surprisingly good with video recording. The best part is,apart from lower resolutions, it can record videos in 640x480 res at 15fps!! Not bad at all. The quality doesnt suffer much. For a sub 10k phone, its an awesome thing!!
Btw, the phone's 3G capabilities are seriously limited as there is no front cam for video calls. I dont know who uses it here but anyways, its a must for any phone tht claims to be 3G compliant.
Camera : Snaps : 6/10 Video : 8/10 (for its price..LOL )
[BREAK=Connectivity And Network Reception]
Connectivity : The phone supports USB 2.0 via Pop port, Infra red and Bluetooth for communication with Pc and other compatible devices. I only tried USB connection with my PC and everything was just fine. You have to first install the Nokia PC Suite for connection. Most users of Nokia will be familiar with the functionality of PC suite. As such, i didnt face any issues. File transfer from pc was a breeze. The phone supports EDGE and GPRS networks as usual. The Phone can also be used as a modem. The bluetooth is v2. The first firmware version for this phone didnt support Bluetooth A2DP..Nokia had already announced that the feature will be added in newer firmware upgrades. I do not have a Bluetooth headset to check this but i've been informed that this feature is already available in current firmware v.4.91. Thats a good thing. But pretty useless for me.. i wud still use the wired headphones..and save a lot of battery power..
Btw, the phones browser capabilities are seriously limited. It supports an XHTML browser which is no good for browsing on the phone. In fact, its a big pain.
Also, the phone doesnt charge thru the data cable..so make sure if you are upgrading your firmware thru the datacable, you have your mobile completely charged or atleast have the recharger connected as well. Cos if it dies out during a firmware upgrade, it cud screw your phone. Also once upgraded, you cannot revert back to previous firmware. Atleast the Nokia FAQ site says so..
Connectivity : 8/10
Network Reception and Battery :
The phone doesnt have any issues with network reception whatsoever. Normally Nokia is very strong in this department. So no problems.. Voice on the other side is heard pretty clear as my friends confirmed.
Battery Time is just average. Two days with 1/2 hour talking, a few snaps and about 2-3 hours of music listening. I expect it to improve a bit as i have only charged it once till now. I think you can expect about 3 days of battery usage time.
Network Reception : 9/10
Battery : 6/10
[BREAK=Games And Conclusion]
Games : Well, i'm not much of a mobile gamoholic(dont know if such a word exists.. ) so didnt even bother to try the games in the phone. Just for your record, it has like 3 games in the memory card. Rally 3D, Snake and Soccer 3d.
Games: Cant rate since i didnt play. :bleh:
Conclusion :
The Nokia 6233 is definitely a very worthy successor to the 6230.It has all that a business user or an executive is looking for and then some. It scores highly in terms of its brilliant screen, its exceptional stereo speakers and overall functionality which is pure Nokia. The phone definitely looks more expensive than it is and this is definite a plus. The cam is decent for everyday shots and the video recording capabilities are great for its price. Its built very sturdy and will last long, if you intend to keep phones long enough..
The bad part about this phone is this phone has very less internal memory,only 6mb. The supplied 64mb card isnt a lot of respite either. So the first thing you need to do when you buy this phone is to invest a bit more and get atleast a 512mb card. The 3G capabilities are useless without a frontal cam but anyways, i dont care about 3G.. Also the XHTML browser sucks. Battery life is average but you cannot expect more than this with the brilliant speakers and the screen keep sucking in more power. Two days is what you shud expect with this battery. And finally, the bundle is lacking a lot of required things. Afterall whats the use of a multimedia phone without a datacable. Nokia should seriously think over this. Thats like 400 bucks for the datacable and 900 bucks for a 1GB card if your phone stands a chance as a music device. That adds up to the overall cost.
I recommend this phone whole heartedly to anyone looking for a serious mobile device which is capable and at the same time a great value for a mobile phone for all it has to offer. It surely is the jack of all trades and a master of some!! A true all rounder!!
