Nokia E50 Review- Symbian for the masses

well a no. of people that I knew have waited so long for a symbian phone that was cheap, with upto date features and mostly the same size as the non smartphone

1) they should be narrow and slim enough to hold in hand and talk for extra hours with comfort
2) when needed act as a document/Ebook reader, music player, even web browser
3) also for some advanced users, they can act as sega genesis emulator, or even a proper remote control for pc's
Yeah sort of a 6630 into a slim shell.... Enter The E50.....

Genesis:

E50 is the youngest member of Nokia's "Enterprise" series consisting of stalwarts like E61 and E70... It is different from them in missing out on a qwerty board and also more significantly Wifi.... But then it is aimed more at the Business user who mainly talks and then some more......[BREAK=Box contents/ Looks, Build quality]

E50 handset

CA53 USB cable
Mono earphone/handsfree

NO mem card BUNDLED
Internal mem = 70 MB

Looks, build , Keypad

the phone is 113 mm long (arnd the same as 6600), just 44 mm wide, and just 15mm thick( 5mm slimmer then K750).... That makes it in my books as the most comfortable phone to sit and chat , or hold and message... it just feels perfect...

as for Build quality, since the phone is made of metal(partly) it feels nice and solid...
Design ofcourse is a personal choice, but the version that I have (liquid black), methinks looks better
Beauty as I always say is in the eye of beholder..

some people think it looks like nokia 1100 ;), while for some this is infact a good thing...

paintwork was not upto the mark though , and the area around joystick was poorly finished....

It has the "pencil" key or edit key on the side..

Keypad: Keypad is quite ok, but the joystick is horrible. It is the same dreaded one as in 3250 and tries to drill hard into your thumb if u mess around with it... Do play around with an E50 before buying it... [BREAK=Display/Unique features]
Display, Sound
Few words about the display since it has been much maligned around the web. It is a QVGA (240*320) 2 inch with 262k colors.Technically looks good, but the quality is not upto excellent Nokia standards.... For comparo N73 which has a same spec screen but a 2.4 incher shows much better and juicier colours.... Morever the fonts used by Nokia here are tiny, and some people do have a problem reading messages( I will post screen shots)... Font size is also not adjustable(except the web browser).... anyway It gets the job done... u are not goin to watch godfather on it...

comparison with K790i also shows the weak screen of e50
The silver lining is that The display is superbly readable outdoors, even in bright sunlight...
It has a single mono speaker that is loud enough and is of roughly the same quality as N70,6630,6680, just gets the job done.....
Features

Unique to e50
1)SMS reader:
msgreaderph0.jpg

Reads out your sms's quite loudly in the accent of ur choice;(additional language packs might be installed);; might not be a useful feature but fun anyways

2)Notification lights:
notifylighteo4.jpg

The area around the Joystick contains some LED's that can be set to blink when a new event occurs(like a
new message, or a missed call), The settings can be done from the menu

3)enhanced Standby display;
standby1gu8.jpg

E50 is one of the 1st Nokia smartphones to support "standby plugins". At the moment only plugin available is "message inbox"...Let us hope Nokia allows 3rd party apps to use this feature...

4)Teams:
teamswp5.jpg

well u can make groups or "teams" among ur contacts... then u can send he same message or make a conference call among the team members with a single button press. I will make it simpler

I have a team whch has 3 contacts: tom, dick and harry. when I click on the conference button the phone will call tom,put him on hold, call dick, put him also on hold and do the same with harry and then when all three are connected u can have a nice meeting.. u get the idea ,right!
[BREAK=other Major features]
Some other features

MUSIC player:

musicplayergc5.jpg

IT is a great great app native to all 3rd edition phones, and you really do not need a 3rd part app for this . u can sort music according to artists, albums, etc.
equalizers: preset and custom: do affect the sound quality
any track in the music lib can be searched by entering a string of letters
Volume can be controlled from anywhere in the menu using side volume keys...
Sound output via 3.5mm jack(ad 15) and standard earphones, is very good and loud enough to use in a room /office... for use on bus/train u might need noise-cancellation earphones...
Real player

plays back standard 3gp and rm( both a & v ) and also some forms of mp4 files... Note that this version of real player does not support "avc" format which is suported by N73 and N80......... video can be played fullscreen.

Quickoffice

A rather good office reader(doc, ppt and excel), but unlike other eseries u cannot edit them

Adobe PDF reader

Easily the worst app on board, makes a stupid job of even small pdf files.... If u do need a nice pdf reader then check out mbrain's pdf plus...
ZIp manager
A very useful utility that helps u open .zip archives. It would have helped a lot if it opened . rar too...
file manager
continues the tradition of stupid inbuilt file managers.Install Y-browser(freeware) as soon as u get ur phone....
Camera:
camera2fg9.jpg

cameraqm9.jpg

he,he.. It is just for the sake of it... coming from K790i, it was one heck of a downgrade, and I have taken around 10 snaps fr the past 3 months..... anyways it is NON AF 1.3 Mp unit. To it's advantage, u can set "WB" and color tones...
video is recorded in 3gp format at 176*144... camera quality is same as 6630 or maybe a bit more inferior...

[BREAK=Reception,BAttery/ Verdict]

Reception, call quality and Battery life

Reception and call quality is excellent. In call coversation volume is very loud and I love Nokia fr that.. ;)

Battery life is average to good... lasts around 1 day with very heavy usage, 2-3 days with calls and messaging
also takes in Ngage qd's battery... might last longer then....
CONS

1) bad joystick <<<<<<<<<< improved in newer models<<<
2)Plain jane looks
3)small fonts difficult to read fr some
4)Low RAM( fr runnin apps)

Pro's
1) very small and light
2)cheap
3)S60 3rd

Verdict: selling at around 10k ,It really does not get better then this phone. it is essentially an N73 with a worse display and a much worse camera.

and if u are in a market for a symbian phone and do not care abt the camera then maybe e50 makes the call for you!

p.s -Forgot abt the hardware, eh.. :P .. well It is the standard 235 Mhz proccy , with ram at 16 MB on startup...(N73 has 18 mb on start up)... so better restrict multitaskin to simple apps to avoid memory full errors...

If u have any questions, then pls feel free to ask...
