INTRODUCTION

nokia-n82-04-1.jpg

Nokia N82 is considered as one of the best N-series Cellular product yet. I changed like 5 mobile phones (L6i, N73me, K810, W810i, K750) until I laid my hands on this beauty.

Of each of my previous purchases although the mobile phones had received good reviews in their categories but I always felt them to be a bit short of my expectations and hence the quest for the next good mobile phone continued till now.

Hence I would review this nice mobile phone for u all

Before the N82 I owned a Nokia N73 ME.

It was a very successful product from nokia at the time I had purchased it, but it had its share of lots of shortcomings. I used to get frustrated by that mobile phone due its sheer negligence to improve as a product even after recent firmware updates. And soon the time came I let it go…..

Next thing I purchased was a Sony Ericsson K810i, a very good mobile phone. One can say it’s charismatic. But the small size of screen + the joystick made me look ahead of it too. (Mind you my palms sweat, hence I used to fear with the very gap left there in k810i with its small joystick).

Now I wanted to be dead sure that next mobile phone that I would purchase for myself should last me like 2.5-3yrs similar to my old lovely Sony Ericsson K750i. Looked for various reviews, advantages, shortcomings, price to performance etc… etc…. and finalized for a Nokia N82 (of course the Black Edition).

SE k850 and Nokia 95 8GB were also under my options but I dint like them enough.

NOKIA N82 @ FIRST GLANCE

Nokia N82 is candy bar shaped mobile phone. It`s moderate in weight, feels good in hands while holding it. Build quality of the phone is top-notch. Even after using it for 20 days already, it still looks new. The phone has an ambient light sensor which adjusts the screen brightness as per the surrounding light in the area. It is situated right above the 2.4inch display along with the earpiece grill.

The D-pad is very nicely put. Call button, end button, selection button, all present at their respective places in a very good manner.

The left side consist of the memory card slot, charger plug and the MicroUSB slot. The memory card slot is nicely covered but the other 2 are left uncovered.

The right side consists of many things. Stereo speakers are placed on both the ends along with the volume/zoom key, media center key and the camera shutter key at the right place. The camera key is neatly placed and given a metallic finish. The other keys are in black. While using the camera application all the right side keys lighten up which adds to easiness while clicking photos and pressing right buttons at the correct time.

Over the top side, there is the power key as well as the 3.5mm audio jack. The audio jack situated above, really helps the mobile phone fit very nicely in your trouser/jeans pockets.

On the bottom side the only thing present is the microphone.

The backside of Nokia N82 shows the real gem of the phone. It holds the 5mp camera with Carl Zeiss lens and the very powerful Xenon flash. The lens protecting mechanism adopted by nokia N82 is a also very good and easy to use.

Below the camera is the battery cover with the standard battery inside it. Nokia boasts the battery to provide nice talk time but I found it sufficient only for the usage of a day or 2 with light usage.

The screen suffers from brightness issue. When u start the mobile phone it’s very bright but again goes dim. May be Nokia`s upcoming firmware can solve the issue.

KEYPAD

The keypad of nokia N82 is the most criticized feature similar to Nokia N91. At first glance even I was not fond of the same but due to lack of competitive products from other manufacturers had to overlook this one drawback of the N82 (it looked like a drawback @ first glance).

But the real fact is:

After 2 days of usage, I hardly find the same ‘controversial’ keypad really a flaw. In fact it gives my thick thumbs enough space to work on it to avoid mistakes. Of course Nokia could have given a much better solution, but the current one is also not bad. Keypad backlighting is good and even. It does a decent job.

DSC00021.jpg

DISPLAY

The Nokia N82 is blessed with the 2.4” QVGA display with 16million color production. The quality of screen is not as good as that I had seen on my Nokia N73me or the Sony Ericsson K810i. The screen of N82 suffers from serious brightness issue (rather a firmware issues) as well as faded colors in direct sunlight. Visibility in direct sunlight is comparable to other Nokia phones which is good.

To sum it all up but I would say it`s still a very good display.

THE SIGNIFICANT USE OF THE MOBILE PHONE

The signal reception is fantastic, somewhat better than my earlier Sony Ericsson K810i and the Nokia N73me. The mobile phone offers superb speaker quality providing crisp and clear sound during calls without any possible interference. Vibration is also strong. You just won’t miss any call or a message.

The ringing volume is kind of a letdown. The sound is really low. Nokia N73me beats the N82 in this aspect. It’s just that low. I can’t even use normal songs as my ringtones because of the low volume from the speakers. From past 20 days I have set the default Nokia tune as my ringtone so that it becomes audible.

[BREAK=Operating System S60 V3 OS 9.2 FP1]

OPERATING SYSTEM

Nokia N82 runs on Symbian 9.2 OS with the Series60 3rd edition user interface with Feature Pack 1. The 128MB RAM makes it fun to use the phone. It just never gets depleted, at the same time provides good OS performance. As of now I have not faced any memory full warning on it.

Phone menu has 2 viewing mode options only: The Grid view and Normal view. Icons do have an animation feature which is not that significant. Font size can be chosen from 3 available presets.

Navigation through the Menu is really fast with good tactile response from the UI as u press the buttons. Screen changes automatically from Portrait mode to Landscape mode and vice-versa due to the presence of automatic sensor. The auto-rotation feature of the screen is really quick, like a blink of the eye. You can also see a blue circle @ folders and application which are running whilst consuming your precious ram so that you can quite them. Many alarms can be set one time.

The active stand-by display is present in the phone. It’s a very good feature indeed. Somehow I used to miss it when I was using the SE K810i. It permits you quicker access to selected applications.

The phone has a vast built in memory of 132MB which I have mostly used to install themes and some 3rd party applications. The already included in the package – 2GB MicroSD card is also handy. Some people have used the 8GB MicroSD card with the phone and yet have not faced any issues with it.

Accessing the applications through memory card and phone memory is equally quick but I prefer installing themes only in the phone memory for much better response and games can go in the memory card.

The multimedia menu present in the S60 3rd OS is really cool. It kind of gives a really different outlook to the phone. It makes it more sober and equally elegant. There is a dedicated key on the phone to launch it. You can arrange the icons as per your preference if you feel so.

It also has a very good voice recognition system, although I have to speak commands in heavy American accent.

THEMES

Nokia N82 has five preinstalled themes which are good but you can also add more as per your likening.

PHONEBOOK

The phonebook is just awesome. You can store as many contacts as you can, till your memory (phone/MicroSD) runs out. There are also different fields present where you can store lots of different information for one contact. You can also assign ringtones and video tones to personalize your contacts. The call log application is worth mentioning as it stores 20 no. of outgoing/incoming/missed each and also keep track of all the above occurring past 30 days.

MESSAGING

This can get a bit tricky. For me the keys are just perfect and easy to use while I SMS but, for others it might not be the same. It’s more dependent on the user`s preference. On the software front, the messaging application is good. You can send SMS, MMS, Audio messages and email.

[BREAK=Music/Video/FM/3d Gallery]

MUSIC PLAYER

The default music player present in the nokia N82 is a good application. It supports various audio formats which include MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA. Playlist can be prepared as per your preference and songs can be searched by just typing the first few letters of the song.

Transferring tracks to Nokia N82 is a easy job. Insert the memory card in the SD adapter, insert the adapter In the USB card reader and there you go transferring loads of songs in your phones music library in few minutes. If you don’t have a memory card reader, the phone can be connected to a PC via the MicroUSB data cable for transferring songs, videos etc. Transfer of things into the memory via the data cable is slow.

The music player has 5 equalizer presets which can be altered to suit the owner`s taste. It also supports A2DP to use Bluetooth stereo headsets. I myself use the DELL BH200 Bluetooth stereo headset and my oh my… what can I say… it`s just Brilliant.

The audio quality is really good but not better than the Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Still it`s better than the Nokia N73`s music application. The 3.5mm jack makes it easy to pop in my creative EP-630`s and hear the songs in a more pleasant manner as the default earphones provided by nokia is just BAD.

VIDEO PLAYER

The handset features a Real player for playing the video clips. It feels really nice while watching videos on the 2.4” screen @ full screen mode. Flash player is also present to play almost all the flash files you can throw at it.

FM

If the above entertainment options don’t suit your mood, you can opt for the radio. The radio application automatically saves the available radio stations after searching them for a few seconds.

DSC00030.jpg

DSC00029.jpg

3D GALLERY

It’s a good feature. Makes surfing through albums fun. Automatically turns into portrait to landscape and vice-versa. It also supports showing nice slide show with audio playing in the background. The available ram makes it smooth for you to go through the pics/videos.

If somehow you feel getting more out of the file management you can also switch to the File Manager application. It allows letting you do all possible things with your files. File manager boasts of no significant difference over my old Nokia N73me.

[BREAK=5 Mega Pixel camera and Video Recording]

5 MEGA PIXEL CAMERA WITH A/F, XENON FLASH, CARL-ZEISS LENS (ULTIMATE GOODNESS)

It is the most significant USP of the Nokia N82. The Xenon flash combined with the great architecture and productivity if the 5MP camera along with the Carl-Zeiss lens is just brilliant. The camera cover keeps the camera hidden and protected from daily wear and tear.

The camera start-up time is quite short like 3-4 seconds and it does not take more than 2-2.5 seconds switching from one click to the other click, which makes it really faster than my Nokia N73me and SE k810i. Automatic preview has to be turned off to get these timings.

The camera UI is a good upgrade as comparable to N73me and offers exhaustive settings. Setting the ISO level, sharpness, contrast etc as per your scenario you can click really nice pics. There is an option of using grid-line structure also, which gives it kind of a professional approach. Presets for the flash are available.

The camera is simply AWESOME. I mean I do own a SONY-DSC-H3 digital camera, but I find the N82`s more convenient, easy to use and simply brilliant. It’s not that beats the hell out of my dedicated digital camera, but it performs really nice as it’s a multifaceted device but not just a digital camera.

Check the samples of photos clicked by the N82, Sony DSC-H3 and SE K810i.

There is a secondary camera present above the display screen and is useful while doing video call on 3G supported lines as well as it lets u click your photo with a VGA resolution from the camera application while the 5MP camera cover is closed.

VIDEO RECORDING

Videos on the Nokia N82 are recorded @ VGA resolution at 30FPS which is really great and the quality of the videos match to the quality of DVD videos to some extent. Few options are present to customize video recording. On a 2GB card, I believe a video of 70-90 minutes can be recorded, provided the card it empty. There is a bit of a problem here but, you won’t be able to record videos worth watching at night time due to the lack of dedicated led lights and the Red sensor embedded in the xenon flash stays ON while recording the video @ any given time, which may result in inconvenience at certain scenarios.

[BREAK=Connectivity, Browser, Organizer]

CONNECTIONS

N82 has loads of connecting options. You can use Bluetooth, WI-FI, GPRS, EDGE, and 3G to connect to the ever evolving surroundings There is no infrared port which kind of a letdown from my perspective as I used to use my N73me`s IRDA sensor as a wireless remote with the help of 3rd party applications.

WEB BROWSER

Browsing in Nokia N82 is similar to browsing in any other Symbian based phone, for example my earlier N73me, Nothing special in this segment. The screen size of 2.4inch feels really small here. I prefer using the Opera mini over the default web browser which can be downloaded for free. But it is capable to open any site with all its gloryJ.

ORGANISER

I missed the sheer ease of use of the Organizer when I shifted from my Nokia N73me to the SEk810i. It just feels like coming back to home. It’s very convenient and suits every person’s time management needs. You can set meeting, memo, to-do notes, etc.

There is another application present in the phone called as the Life Blog. I hardly use the same due to very high cost of using GPRS in our country, hence anticipating buyers can try this on own.

Mobile office is a compact office suite which comes in Nokia N82 by default. It allows us to read through various Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without any possibilities of editing. Adobe PDF reader helps in reading PDF files. I prefer Mobireader over adobe reader for the ease with it handles the PDF files, although u need to convert the PDF files into another format for it.

Convertor, Calculator, Voice Recorder are other applications which do their job well.

[BREAK=Ngage, GPS, Summary]

N-GAGE

It comes with 2 preinstalled demo games. One is the graphically impressive Fifa 2007 and another is the Asphalt racing game 3D which is quite fun. You can download more games from internet via purchasing them or through other sources. Snake also makes a great return in the S60V3. It was there in my Nokia N73, but with the recent firmware updates it just went away. But its back with a bang.

[G] [P]

Nokia N82 has a built in GPS receiver with A-GPS. At least in my area it takes time for my N82 to connect to the GPS satellites. The A-GPS support somewhat manages to make it quick, but again it results in live data transfer resulting in the GPRS usage charge.

Further Nokia has provided us with a built in application called Nokia Maps. It has a very detailed map. You can download the maps from Nokia`s website and let the application use to guide you. The application is very good in terms with locating your position and giving you constant heads up over the upcoming turns and twists, and it’s free. With the N82 I bought I got 30 days of voice navigation trial.

But due to the area of Navi Mumbai not being detailed in the Nokia Maps application, I hardly use the application. But still the overall impression was good. It helps when you need it to help. BTW it works wonderfully once you are in Mumbai.

SUMMARY

I would rate this mobile phone 4.8/5. The brightness issue and a bit low speaker sound were not expected. Just get it guys. It’s better than Nokia N78 too!

Ooops one more thing…. It’s a finger print magnet, especially the black edition but its looks the best of all.

Chill guys..

Vandal, different reviewers hav different POVs..What suits u the best is what u'l vouch for..

The only few differences between n82 and n95 are the xenon flash, the screen size, much more responsive menu and apps in N82 etc..
Packing these better features in a smaller and sleeker package like n82 makes me feel that its a great phone, Only crib is the screen size..nothing else, but seeing tha n82 is a different package in a different genre, its acceptable..

All hail the n82...!!!!!

ok to all the techies here as well as the reviewer....u guys have any idea of the max capacity N82 supports-like a 8GB card????does it support tht???no mention anywhere on the nokia website.:S

n82 in theory supports upto 32gb cards .. as of now upto 16gb is available outside india .. i am using my n82 with 8gb sandisk micro sd card since last four months without any issues .. is it enough to clear ur doubts ..:cool2:

From what i think, phones support a standard say sd card or mini sd and their sub standards..so if it matches the standards, i dont think theres anything to worry abt..

@yogi7272

you said no issues with the 8G card

but wanna know how fast is the N82 in accessing and writing to the card.

thanx mate!!!but ya i would like to know if the phone slows down with tht kind of data???also how much did it cost u o get tht 8gb card-last hear 4gb cards were selling for like 1k!!!!:)

For the record - I love my n82's keypad ever since i saw it. I hate the fat-joint-connected keys that most people seem to like!

card cost was 2.4k with mirco card reader from sandisk - 5yrs warranty ..

the phone is very fast even with 8gb card .. writing , reading etc .. no issues at all

Phone data transfer speed does NOT depend on the size of the card. It depends on how data is stored on the card, If there is lots of data scattered all around the place, the phone will take time accessing the files.

^ FYI fragmentation is not a problem in flash memory, it does depend on the access time and read/write speed which differs from brand to brand. Most phones can't even read those el cheapo chinese cards if you fill them up with data. It is said that older symbian phones like the ngage and the 6600 can't handle >512 mb, but i have successfully used original kingston and sandisk memory cards on both of them for a couple of years and I ain't got no slowdown.

similar to my thoughts .... !

most of the ppl without even using the cellphone forehand say crap abt it.

arre... use it for a day or 2 and see how u get a hang of it !

^^^I agree..From the time the phone launched, i've been literally fighting with ppl arguing that the n82 keypad is actually much more productive than those fat ass'ed keys in other phones:)
