Hi.i bought a new nokia n97 mini.i updated the OVI maps to the latest and also used the map loader to load the mapss related to India to my phone's hard drive so that i don need to go online each time.but now the problem is now if i want guidance to some place its not locking onto any satellite.it just keeps saying waiting for gps.i also stood under an open sky and tried it but no use.do help me guys.If anyone has a mini or 5800 can they just tell me the GPS settings if any??

Also i had one more question.if i load the maps related to India onto the phone's hard drive, wont i need GPRS conection??

Time taken to obtain satellite fix is usually longer with the first use.

No, In your case you do not need a GPRS connection but AGPS will certainly reduce time to obtain satellite lock. It will use only a few kb's at startup.

Yeah the GPS is not that powerful.
Just GPS will take you ages.
Better use A-GPS, still it will take some time to get a sattelite lock the first time.
IMO if you want to use GPS, better get a Bluetooth GPS dongle and use it along with the phone.

Sumatrix, If you were using the gps for the first time getting a satellite lock may take upto ~10mins.
If you're unsuccessful in first go, try a different location.

Still if it doesn't work, try a different GPS application, try google maps or garmin.
Get google maps here, after running it make sure it's using the inbuilt gps, usually it's turned on by default, just incase it's not, go to options > Turn on GPS.
Google maps tell's you your location by using your GPRS/EDGE connection also, so if your location is shown with a precision ~50 meters or less then it's using GPS.

I have a samsung i8910, and I usually get a satellite lock within ~30 secs provided there is a clear line of sight to the sky. But It does take upto ~5 minutes max at times when I'm in a moving car or when I'm in a building.

bluetooth GPS dongle??wat does it do??

A GPS dongle, is an external GPS receiver.
It's for phone's that don't have internal GPS chip's.

No need to be concerned with this, your phone is perfectly capable of getting a satellite lock on it's own

I had the exact same issue with a N97 mini that I was reviewing. The only solution is to jump-start the GPS by starting google maps. Once the device locks on to the satellites and finds your co-ordinates, switch back to OVi maps and it'll work all right. You'll have to repeat this process each time until Nokia releases an update as it appears to be a software issue.

ko.am downloading garmin now.wil check and update the status.in my opining locking of a phone to a satellite not only depends on the hadware but also on the software.am i right or wrong?

Hi,

I think Garmin is quite new in India. So won't it will be a better idea to download the new GPS software for the mobile phones from some renowned Indian company like Map My India or SatGuide.

I think both of them are doing quite a good work in GPS sector.

Regards

can anyone care to answer my question??that whetehr grs satellite lock depends only on hardware or depends on software too??

To that I would say Hardware only. Also I am assuming that by software you do not mean the 'gps device drivers'.

For dedicated GPS units, satellite recievers etc people use Shark Finn Antenna to boost signal reception. However in my opinion GPS antenna in mobile phones is not a good signal receptor on its own. Maybe that's the reason why its takes longer to lock.

wel i thought that the software algorith used to lock on is also different from software to software.

don't think so.. is the gps still not working?

its working but uite slow.taking almost 3 mins even wen am under a clear sky

Thats what i told you. The GPS in 5800 is not that powerful.

N79 or N82 had much better GPS capabilities.

^ Well I think he has N97..

@Sumatrix. Why don't you try A-GPS. As everyone explained it does take longer to lock on if you are using 'Integrated GPS' setting only.

My Bad. :P
But i still feel that the GPS in N97 mini or 5800 are the same.
Not that powerful as you expect it to be.
Using Bluetooth GPS dongle, i cud get locks within a min and that too without A-GPS.

i've a n97 . google maps locks faster and even inside my house.this was the reason y i was asking whether the software plays a part in satellite lock.i even get upto 4 satellites inside my house and 6-7 outside.well it does work on a-gps and hence might be faster.,

update: ran google maps and then nokia maps.even both of them at the same time but gmaps locks around 3-4 sats in the houise while nmaps doesn even lock to 1. outside my house under the clear sky:gmaps locks to around 5-6 sats while nmaps strts up only after 3 mins. pl do remm that i ran both of them simultaneously
