Guys,
Bought new notebook RAM with following specifications DDR333mhz 512MB...Bought it from prime today...It had an old hynix 256MB module installed which runs at 333mhz...

Seeing the speed mentioned i bought this RAM&my frined told me that this RAM isn't compatible afte he clarifed with an HP techinician online...
now my doubts...
Isn't DDR333 backward compatible with DDR266mhz?So in a way the new RAM should run at lower frequency...I tried in the both the slots..it doesn't recognize it...please help me or i feel my money went down the drain...:(

you say that your 256MB ram runs at 333mhz. And then you say it runs @ 266mhz . Which one is correct ?.

Ok . Let me assume that your old ram is 266mhz and your new one is 333mhz. In this case it cant be said that because of backward compatibility this issue arises. Even that particular brand can be incompatible.

Did you check installing your new RAM module alone ?. If it works, then it means that brand (your new RAM) is compatible and your motherboard lacks memory frequency combination.

Please provide the exact model number of the RAM module you purchased and the notebook.

I purchased the transcend 512MB DDR333mhz module...the notebook is HP paviliion ZE5000series,,,,

The reason i said 266mhz is that because my friend called up saying he verified with some online techinican&they said it required 266mhz RAM module...this confirmation was being done after the module was purchased..it has old hynix module which is rated at 333mhz&seeing the specification we bought this new one...:(

I tried installing new RAM alone...the system doesn't even POST...:huh:it does only with old RAM module...

HP Pavilion ZE5000

RAM At least 128 MB RAM preinstalled.

Models with Technology Code KB:

Two slots for PC2100 DDR-266 RAM modules.

Up to 1 GB (1024 MB) RAM using 512 MB modules, future support for 2 GB RAM maximum.

Models with Technology Code KC:

Two slots for PC-133 SDRAM modules.

Up to 1 GB (1024 MB) RAM.

Assuming you have the KB model, it clearly states the support for PC2100 modules.

So you should have got a 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 266 (PC 2100), Non-ECC, Unbuffered module.

Why go in for a higher frequency, if it ain't going to run at the speed?

In your case, I can only suggest you get a different memory module, something from Kingston, that meets the above spec.

maye you are right..thats what even the HP technician said online to my friend...i checked his notebook&saw the old module which was rated at 333hz?so hows this one working? Is the new RAM faulty?my frined trusted me for buying the RAM thinking since have some knowledge on h/w..don't know what to do?

Can you check if the new module(one your purchased) is a 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700), Non-ECC, Unbuffered with Cas Latency of 2.5 and Voltage 2.5V?

If yes, then the new RAM module is indeed flaky and I suggest you go in for a better brand. I usually recommend Kingston or Crucial.
