Laptops :( Nothing is being displayed on the Laptop display

Hi All,

Yesterday my brother was playing BEJEWELED 2 in the laptop. All of a sudden, the display got kaput. The colors became like a RGB (mixture of colors) content and the laptop(HP dv2601tx) hanged. Did try by removing the battery of the laptop and start it again. I tried thi few times, the following happened each time.

1. When restarted nothing was coming on the display and i was able to hear the Vista loading sound.
2. I removed the battery and then start, it started showing the display and then again gone kaput showing the same RGB like display while loading Vista and got hanged.
3. Again i removed the battery and started it, it asked the options to load the OS in safe mode or normal mode. I used the Safe Mode and it loaded fine without any issues, but after restarting from Safe Mode no display was coming.
4. Again i did restart the laptop by removing the battery and putting it back. Naaah same issue no display from that time, nor was i able to hear the Vista loading sound.

Can i know what would be the reason. Any help what can be done.

Also this was happening sometimes before, sometimes when the laptop used to start, the resolution would come down to 800*600, while it usually will be in the 1280*800 resolution.
 
No i have not tried, planned to connect my 19" monitor but since i was not able to see the BIOS loading itself, i did not try it. Will do check that after i go home today. Also i have asked my brother to take it to the HP dealer from where i got my laptop.
 
If the laptop is out of warranty, & you are interested in getting it done by a local guy, let me know

Thanks buddy, let me know the details of that person, will also do check with him. My laptop is almost 2.5 years old and is out of warranty.
 
I got the Laptop repaired from the HP centre, they said it is the graphics processor issue and replaced at 6200 bucks. Got it on 26th, but now from yesterday again i am getting the same prob. After getting the Laptop i did upgrade the graphics driver to the latest (258.96_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit). The service centre has given 1 and half months service time, need to get it done again :(
 
Quick note to everyone...

Whenever your laptop screen starts giving out weird coloured shapes(not windows screensaver ~_~), or starts to show multitude of pixels ( called as Artifacting)especially when doing graphics intensive job, it is 95% gpu related.
And also means your graphics card has over heated to such a extent that it has almost got fried( reason being improper applying of thermal paste in factory).

Another helpful note for everyone who are versed with changing thermal paste for GPU, do change them once u have bought your laptop(most companies do not void warranty for changing thermal paste on GPU, however confirm this before actually replacing it), since most of the factory applied thermal paste are of lower quality and are not evenly applied which results in most part of the GPU die, not in contact with the heat sink.
When there is no proper contact between the GPU and heatsink the temperature of your GPU is bound to rise and finally will result in artifacting and dying.
