I am thinking of getting a new gfx card....i had almost decided upon the 4670 until i found out that the Palit 9600GT is available for 5.5k.

This has made matters quite confusing for me..is the Palit 9600GT any good since its considerably cheaper than the other 9600gt's around?

Most reviews i have read so far seem to put the 9600gt slighlty infront of the 4670 in most scenarios. I dont intend to play games but still which would be a better buy?

My current config is
AMD X2 5600+
MSI K9N2GM FD
Kingston DDR2 800 1gb x 2
1 Hdd + 1 Odd
VIP 400W Gold

Will the VIP 400W be able to handle a 9600gt or i'll need to get something else? I had decided to go for the 4670 as it doesnt require an extra power connector like the 9600gt but the price of the palit card has made me reconsider.

All your help will be really appreciated! :)

getting the 9600gt over the hd4670 might need a change in PSU....and afterall u self confessed u wouldnt be gaming too much.....the 9600gt would suck in more power as well.....so if u can do with the 4670 thats wat u need to buy...

p.s. me buying a 4670 myself shortly too...(as advised by a lot of people on TE)

I for one, would rate the IQ of ATI better than nVidiot. :P

U dont game either, so go ahead with the HD4670. Sapphire/GeCube/Asus/MSI/HIS/Powercolor/Palit and goes on. Get the one with the local warranty.

No matter what card u're intending to buy, U SHOULD change the PSU to a better one. Irrespective of the extra pwr connector for the card i.e. At least something like the CM 460W.

^ not a bad suggestion.

@ OP

If you want to get card only @ locally, 4670 would be better to go with as it consumes low power, does better in HD stuff and ofcourse not bad in gaming aswell..:P

I checked a couple of PSU calculators and the load system power requirement comes to about 215W with a 9600gt.

Also a few reviews put the total system power @ idle to be abt 160W and @ load to be abt 230W for the 9600gt...

So shldnt the 400W psu be enough?

yes u are right to some extent but dont forget to analyse how much load will be on 12V line and will it provide enough amperage to the card.
if your system is simple enough with minimum cooling things in it. then it is possible that your 400W will handle the system. else if there is more than 1 piece of components like 2 hdds or 2,3fans etc then it will not be possible to handle the load.:)

Edit:- by the way how much is ur PSU's amperage rating on 12V line.

Powersafe 400W the dual rail one....not the VIP branded as i mentioned before...

Sorry for missing out on it earlier. Could you do me a favor and take a look at the label on the PSU. This would be the powersafe Silver PSU right?

Does it have a UL number on it? Take a look at this link here, follow the steps mentioned within it, and find out the actual manufacturer. If it turns out to be FSP, i would suggest tht there'll be no need for you to change your PSU.

However, the fact does remain that if you get yourself a 80+ rated PSU, you will be saving a lil on your power bill every year.

will 4670 run on my 400W zebronics normal smps...already running 5600+ ,sata 320,690v mobo and 2X1gb ram...

if not will 4650ddr3 run on it...

@stalker : its the Powersafe 400W Gold

The 4670 will run easily. no issues on that front. Also, its the card thats more suited for a nongamer with its lower power consumption.. however, what i would suggest would be for you to upgrade to a 80+ certified psu somewhere in the long run. If you can do it right away, nothing like it.. These PSU's are available for around 3.5k(Corsair CX400 for eg.). The advantage being that you will save up on the power bill to make up for the initial higher cost. Also, you can have absolute peace of mind for future upgrades too.

I had checked out a few reviews for the Sapphire 4670, it consumes less power, occupies only a single slot, the dimensions are such that it'll fit in all cabbys (some 9600GTs are 9-11" long), and takes all the power it needs from the PCI-slot itself, no extra power connectors needed.

But please don't take my word for it, check out reviews for yourself and if all this is true, it should suit you perfectly.

i have just purchased Palit 9600GT. It is working fine on my 500W PSU till now.
Played NFS Most Wanted Fullest configuration without a single break.
But i use 4 HDDs + 1 ODD with 3 cooling fans and TV Tuner Card.
Anyway i have a 300W PSU free, am thinking of connecting it also to my PC for higher power...
Think 800W should be enough for any system:hap2: :hap2:

is it safe to do that...reading some geek posts on this mb..i think this cud lead to mismatched voltages and cud damage the mobo..
