I just found this amazing piece of news. Don't know if this has been posted before, but head over to:

The Inquirer

or for the horse's mouth:

The official Valve site

Man, after ATI's huge investment in HL2 and the kind of promos that are visible everywhere on the web, this must come as a huge blow.

now? dude it has always been, the only thing that ATi can do now is that SLi kinda thing that was going tocome out, if that clicks, then Ati wud be back on top :)

Shows they were better off optimising for the Geforce FX instead of Ati HW.
better off optimizing for mx440 and fx5200 since that seems to be the bulk of the nvidia cards. Interesting to see so many 6800GT owners!

The only thing that useless survey shows is how nvidia managed to sell the gf2 all over again just by calling it a gf4.

Ati should've started selling the 8500's with a cheaper tag and beat nvidia at their own game.

I don't know how you are equating a GF2 to a GF4. I have (or had) both the GF2 and the GF4 and the performance difference was simply too huge to call them even similar cards, forget "same". Could you come up with some kind of an explanation for your statement?

And why do you think the survey is useless? The one very clear thing that stands out in that survey is that more than 80% of gamers are on lowest end cards, contrary to popular belief that most gamers are at least in the mid-end, whether on ATI or nVidia.

So the survey may just force game developers to start concentrating on gameplay rather than special effects and realism. Gameplay remains same whether you are on a 6800 Ultra or on an Intel i810. Hopefully we will see better games from now on, not just better graphics.

I am one of the 6600GT guys, although whether my card was counted on the steam site I am not sure.

Anyone here on TA playing HL2 on a low end card? Say a MX440? That seems to be the most popular card by far.

Geforce 4mx is I repeat is slower then a Geforce 2 GTS or Geforce 2 ultra. I agree with Saumil ATI should have re-entered their 8500's which were clearly much better. Also notice that 9800 and 9600 Series comprises of 21 % of the market !!!

Before I got my 6600gt I had played hl2 on a mx440 and it had worked smoothly suprisingly ;)

Culd some please Tell me, is it worth gng picking up HL2 with my config:

AMD Sempron 2400+
Geforce FX5200
256 MB RAM DDR333

Rest of the stuff like HDD space et all is not an issue, these are the possible bottlenecks....Will it be playable, and has any1 tried with a similar cnfig?

the other config I have is
P-M 725
512MB RAM DDR333
IE gfx 2

Will this one be able to run it decently?
I know i can't xpect great fps, but will it be playable at low settings?

Considering that I finished playing Doom 3 on a GF4Ti4200 with 256 MB RAM, you should be able to play HL2 with a FX5200 and 256MB RAM without any problems. OK, the frame rates may not be in the 70s, but if you get 25-30 fps at any setting it would be eminently playable.

HL2 doesn't seem to tax the GFX as much as D3 does, at least that has been my experience. I get 45 FPS in D3 whereas I get 80+ FPS in HL2 (6600GT, not FX5200 but the difference is obvious).

Oh boy!!! Look at AMD's share!!! 47 to Intel's 53. Never realized that the race is so close!!!!! AMD is really becoming the choice of the gaming community!!!

And can you play HL2 with TNT2 and Intell 810???? There are about 2500 entries with intel 810!!!

Thanks Chaos and Jai,
How about the other config...The process P-M 725 gives me better performance than the AMD sempron; CPU-to-CPU, however, I am not too sure about the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 GFX subsystem whether it'll be able to gimme ~25-30FPS
Surprisingly, it does give me 25-30fps on UT2004 though

I was talking about the gf4mx fiasco, the actual gf4ti line-up was pretty badass.

I don't have anything against budget cards, infact I myself buy only those.
But the gf4mx was simply put - crap.
No shader support? It can't even be called a barebones card.

Ati's 9100 (same card as the 8500 more or less) was priced similar to the gf4mx and was much much better.
The gf4mx only sold due to it's name.

ATi entered the promotion to boost sales of the 9800/9600 carda and it looks like theyve achieved their goal. The reason Nvidia cards were used more widely is probably because many people did not want to upgrade their cards just for Half life 2.
But among those who did i bet Ati won big time. Around 8-9 months ago no one in his/her right mind would have taken Nvidia Fx over ATi 9800pro
