NVIDIA TEGRA: THE HEART OF THE WORLD’S SMALLEST VISUAL COMPUTERS
SANTA CLARA, CA—JUNE 2, 2008—Today, NVIDIA brings visual computing to mobile internet devices (MID) with the launch of NVIDIA® Tegra™, a family of highly integrated computers on a chip. In addition to MIDs, the NVIDIA Tegra 650 and 600 processors will be used in a wide range of innovative platforms such as embedded PCs, web tablets and more. The NVIDIA Tegra 650 processor is the world’s first computer on a chip for mobile visual computers. NVIDIA Tegra features a GPU, media processor, system memory, peripherals and a CPU all in one ultra-low power chip, smaller than a US dime (10-cent piece).

The NVIDIA Tegra 650 processor is the second product in the Tegra line, the first being the NVIDIA Tegra APX 2500 processor, which is enabling the next generation of Windows Mobile smartphones. “With the growing market demand for mobile Internet access, NVIDIA launched the APX 2500 computer-on-a-chip targeted at smartphones and handsets earlier this year. Recognizing that mobile Internet access usages will occur not just on smartphones and handsets but on compute devices as well, NVIDIA announced today their Tegra product line. Representing the first products to be targeted at the MID and portable device space, it is anticipated to bring integrated capabilities similar to the APX 2500 with NVIDIA’s graphics expertise, an ARM core, HD video, and advanced power management,†said Ian Lao, senior analyst at In-Stat.

This new processor features an optimized combination of an ultra-low power GeForce® GPU and an 800 MHz embedded ARM CPU, Due to their highly integrated design, NVIDIA Tegra processors achieve up to 10 times the power efficiency of existing products in battery-operated computer systems running compelling visual computing applications.

“As more consumers begin to access the mobile Internet with devices like smartphones and MIDs, device manufacturers will be challenged to create the same high-quality user experience on mobile devices that consumers currently enjoy on their desktop PCs,†said Warren East, CEO, ARM. “Using advanced ARM technology and providing a ground-breaking mix of performance, power consumption and form factor, the NVIDIA Tegra mobile computer-on-a-chip addresses
this challenge more effectively than any other solution yet on the market, thereby taking a major step toward the oncoming mobile Internet revolution.â€

NVIDIA Tegra 650 also features:
• All-day media processing, for 130 hours audio, 30 hours HD video playback
• HD image processing for advanced digital still camera and HD camcorder functions
• Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet
experience
• Display support for 1080p HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD and CRT, and NTSC/PAL TV-Out
• Direct support for WiFi, disk drives, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals
• A complete Board Support Package (BSP) to enable fast times to market for Windows
Mobile-based designs

"With NVIDIA’s Tegra processor line, we will continue to see impressive mobile innovations in Windows Mobile products," said Todd Warren, corporate vice president of Microsoft's mobile communication business. “Microsoft is dedicated to providing people best-in-class mobile experiences, so that people can carry a single device for work and play."

how about that? a mobile phone with HDMI, that can also play Quake III in 1280x720 at 35fps?? That also supports 720p playback AND record??
the iPhone is toast...

YouTube - ???????? ???????Nvidia Tegra HD Mobile Phone - Development Demo mobile devices???????? ???????

:O WOW..

Specs are obviously very impressive on paper but it looks a bit thick and kind of bulky and not everyone likes such bulky phones. Still the key factors will be the pricing and availability.

The part that actually sucks the most is that it uses a Windows mobile OS.

do hell with bulky when you can carry a multimedia lappy inside your pocket that plays HD content and also posses full fledged browsing

It's been nearly two years since the launch of the iphone, and the impending peril of one iPhone killer after the other (all of which eventually turn out to be duds...and frankly, this one seems to be more of vaporware than anything else)

Giive it up guys, which other phone has been able to maintain the top position for such a long duration in the recent past?

I'd love to see a better phone come around but doesnt seem like there is any round the corner

Absolutely None!

Now i think some guys are gonna again start throwing the usual crap.(iPhone is all hype...etc etc.):P

Why is everyone so concerned with the Iphone? Judge a phone on it's merits and de-merits.

As for Nvidia's HD Phone, we will talk when it's released.

^^ which is why this thread will turn out to be lame vaporware propaganda thread than anything concrete

i don't have a stake in apple equity to blindly propagate the mrits of the iphone

i wondert what invokes such extreme opposed emotions in others

Dude, read them properly, Tegra is a hardware, a processor line. How can you even compare it to an iPhone? You compare two similar products, not two entirely different technologies. I dont like iPhone, but this is sheer stupidity and shows what kind of a noob you are.

Back to the topic, this looks cooooooooooooooollllllll!!!
Just think of it as your media player, attach it to the TV for full HD videos, to the speakers for HD audio, use the Wifi to display images on the Digital Frames and what not.

Not to mention that we could now have more graphically pleasing portable devices :)

The phone looks sweet for what it can do, but it will be worth talking when it comes out, honestly, apple products are really nice, dont know why people have such hatred for them.

LOL... seriously, you didn't know?

Apple hating is fashion... just like Vista hating. :)

Some dude, "Hey, look it's an iPhone. It's so popular currently... it's piece of crap"

Some more dudes, "Yes... it's piece of crap"

iPhone user, "Duh!"

Well that was a concept phone made by nVidia. However the success of the chip depends on whether the third party manufacturers can come up with market viable solutions using that chip. Its no use if a mobile phone using that chip and all those niceties is going to take $1500~2000 to build.

Because most Apple products are not really as cool or perfect as some people think or make them seem. As far as my opinion is concerned, the only worthy products Apple has currently are the Mac Book Pro series and Mac Mini series. (Mac books, iMac, Mac Pro and various iPod's are not worthy of the hype that surrounds them).

If Apple could stop releasing half baked iPhone's every year with flaws/missing critical features in order to make its huge fan[boi] base buy a new iPhone every year, then iPhone would have been another worthy product. Its not that Apple could not fix the flaws in its phones, but rather they deliberately leave them so that they can churn out new phones every year with just a small set of the problems fixed and make the people buy the new version of the phone.

iPhone is not a crappy phone, but frankly I don't know how people can call it the perfect phone when it lacks critical convenience features present even in my age old SE P910i. I don't know why people start comparing all other phones with it as if its some sort of standard when it is nowhere close to being perfect. Its not the best phone in the market and its definitely not worth comparing every other phone with it. Its not a revolutionary product, rather an evolutionary one. Touch screen phones and PDA's have been around long before iPhone entered the market.

I'm not saying iPhone is the perfect phone, but what ever it can do, it can do it better than the rest. Also the rest of the product line up of apple, is fairly competitive. I dont see any product as the perfect product. The price should justify the missing features. But in most cases with apple, what you pay for, you get enough. I have used mac book and mac book pro, and I do like them a lot.

Btw apart from the ipod, have you used any other apple product?

I don't think that this product is going to be vaporware...Tegra has been announced by nVidia in the recent past and it is smaller yet faster then ATOM. Consumes much lesser power then ATOM.

So this type of gadget is certainly possible.

It might not be vaporware, and getting a low-power yet powerful (processing) platform is more than welcome

I, more than anyone would be more than happy to lay my hands on a portable gadget based on such a platform

My only issue was with the ludicrous title of the thread

What does a (hopefully) brilliant mobile computing platform has to do with a title (and an overused one) like "i-phone kiler"
