Hi m8's...I want to OC my system but im a complete noob at it :). So please help me how can i max utilize my hardware. My config:

Windows Xp Pro x64 edition

Intel E5200

Asus P5NSLI

HD 4670 1GB

1+1+2=4Gb 800 Mhz Corsair

CM extreme power plus 500w

What about OCing my proccy? How to go about it? Which software's to use? What are the safe limits at stock ?

Another thing is that i recently installed AI Booster, a software which supposedly would help me OC my PC (It came with my Asus driver cd), Ran it..and my pc just restarted...like I pressed the reboot button, again windows started, I was welcomed with a "windows has recovered from a serious error"..and again it restarted. I noticed that the restart occured immediately after that AI booster was in my taskbar, so started my pc in safe mode and uninstalled it. evrythings fine now

Go to ur BIOS and change the memory to 400 and CPU FSB to 266. Check if the system is stable using OCCT for 1 hour. Dnt change any voltage or any other setting at this point.

Try increasing the FSB to 290 and see if stable.

Similarly go on.

With this, my proccy goes to 3688MHz and RAM 982MHz with everything at stock voltage. :)

So, try reaching this. After this, u might have to bump up the voltage of the proccy to get a higher overclock. Then continue...

Note: U'll need a good cooler to reach higher overclocks. Keep a watch on temps always. Never cross 65 to be on the safe side with stock cooler.

Overclocking is tempting, but control ur urge.

Also, real time performance increase won't be much after 3.75GHz.

Google for E5200 overclocking and u'll get hell lot of pages ;)

Before you do anything else, Lock PCI-E Freq. to 100Mhz.
Next, either set the ram ratio to a setting, or the ram speed itself, to a value that won't go out of the RAM's rated specification(for eg, 800Mhz) when you start bumping up the FSB.

Now start bumping up the FSB in small increments while checking for stability(OCCT should be fine).
Check if the motherboard is providing the correct voltage to the chip by checking its VID(you can use coretemp for this) and looking at the voltage its using at load in CPU-Z. If the board is increasing voltage on its own as you OC, go to the BIOS and put the VID of the chip manually as the vcore.(leave on auto otherwise)
Once you find the highest stable clockspeed you can do w/o touching voltage, you can try decreasing the multiplier a bit and trying to reach near the same speed with a higher FSB(your board will probably be a limiter here). You can also fiddle with the RAM speed/ratio and find how much over the rated speed you can push it on stock volts.

When you get bored/(&)buy an aftermarket cooler, you can start raising volts. Uptil then the stock HS and some good thermal paste should hold well.

Im not able to see a option for that. under the advamced tab, there is cpu config which shows my cpu speed etc. Nothing to change anything except few options that do not seem to relate. There is an option to change the ratio (cpu multipliyer) though..

Under frequency Control ---

System Clock Mode - Cpu/MEM manual mode

New FSB Speed (QDR) -- min 790

max 1600

new Mem Speed (DDR) - Min 400

Max 1200

How should i go about changing it?

Its already set to 100 Mhz

memory speed will be automatically adjusted. As you have Corsair RAMs(xms2 I suppose), they will do upto 1000Mhz. So don't worry. Post your result when its done.

Set the FSB speed to 1000 and see if your computer is able to boot. It should make it.

It didnt. Well, at first everything seemed fine to me. My windows loaded and everything, I saw the difference of my OCing on CPUz as well as normal System settings. It was now rated at 3.13 Ghz at System properties. i installed SiSandra and when I tried to run it, my system hung. (dunno if it was because of my running it). I pressed the reboot button, my desktop loaded and I saw a message which said that some registry had been recovered and some data might be lost. Then, explorer.exe stopped responding..I clicked on "dont send" button and explorer reloaded then again d same error. I restarted my PC, went to bois and restored it to factory settings. Everything was fine after that. (I just received a message saying windows has recovered from a serious error) Out of curiosity, I again tried to set my FSB to 1000 as advised, but this time after the initial windows loading, there was a black screen and no logon screen. I rebooted and the same thing happened. So I again went to bios and restored it to factory settings. its okay now.

So what do I do now?

I would recommend you go step by step slowly finding limits instead of taking a big jump. Increase the FSB in small increments.

I increased my FSB from 800 to 850, only then I was able to successfully operate my pc. What I have noticed from cpuz is that my vcore keeps fluctuating. First it showed 1.072, then after 2-3 sec it showed a something like 1.172 then 1.284 then back to 1.072 then again after some time a little fluctuation.(the fluctuations occurred at different intervals of time)

I increased again from 850 to 900. Now, windows says that a file has been corrupted and I can repair the file via a windows installation disc through the repair console.I again restored my BIOS to factory settings but that didnt help. Then I tried to do what windows was telling me to but forgot to note down the file needed to be repaired so I again restarted but this time windows loaded sucessfully.

When I had set my FSB to 850, OCCT was showing that I had underclocked my pc by some -42%. After restoring it to factory settings it still showed that I had underclocked my pc by -52%. Here have a look:

That is normal baba, it automatically cuts multi in half when on idle to save power. Check it when its on load.
How exactly can you increase your base FSB to 850? :S
You see bus frequency there in the OCCT window? Thats what you have to bump up. Do it in small increments like 10. So try 210, 220, 230 etc. This number x4(quad pumped) will be your total memory to CPU bandwidth.

Take a look at that a little closely...

My current CPU Clock ration is 12.5 x
