Hi,

I am about to buy a pc for my use at my office. The budget is, strictly, < 25K. Will be doing coding, compiling, sql 2005 (client), browsing and all the officey things on this pc. I'll also need as many usb and lan ports that I can get on a single mobo. Obviously, on-board video, sound and lan are a must. And the most important constraint of all is warranty for all parts; preferably for 3 years.

The following's the config on my mind. Got to buy this pc tomorrow. I'll also list my thoughts behind theselection of the parts. Your thoughts on this will be much appreciated.

***********

Amd x2 4000+ - ~Rs.3250

[Could go for the x2 3800+ too, I think. But dual core is a must coz I open too many apps simultaneously and I want it responsive]

Jetway M26GTM-3VP / M2A692-GDG - ~Rs.3000

[This is the place I need the most help as I don't have a clue on the low-end motherboards. Basically, I need the cheapest one that will do the job, while carrying a lot of features onboard]

1GB Transcend 533/667 DDR2 (almost same rate) - ~Rs.1900

[Will Dynet be a cost-effective and warrantied alternative?]

160GB seagate/hitachi internal hdd - Rs. 2,400

[SATA or SATA2, depending on price.]

Zebronics generic cabinet with PSU - Rs. 900/1000

[Any particular model that is "breezy" and can be looked at without a grimace?

The PSU wattage is also important.]

LG 18x DVD RW drive - ~Rs. 1380

[For backups and stuff ;)]

Viewsonic 19" (preferably, non-wide) LCD ~Rs. 9000

[Would prefer larger screen area for more productivity. Non-widescreen would mean less vertical scrolling. And, LCD means less power draw and more desktop space lost.]

Keyboard + mouse - ~Rs. 800

[Please let me know of any good kbd for coding with a palm rest and a good optical mouse with scroll. There's a microsoft kbd/mouse combo and that's the price I've listed]

Altec Lansing/Creative 2.0 speakers - ~Rs. 450

[Not very important. Only for voice chats on skype and for those little multimedia escapades :ashamed: ]

Microtek/APC ups 600/500VA - Rs.2,000/2,300

[Will microtek 600VA be reliable enough? Or should I get APC for the office?]

Anything I missed? Softwares are already bought. The above prices are from deltapage.com and theitwares.

Yea, this is for the same office I am getting help for over here too:

Hi, I also need a configuration for a "headless" server rig for running IPCop.

I was offered the following config as the cheapest available from Lotus computers in ritchie street:

P4 celeron 2.6GHz (I think)

Some compatible motherboard

256MB sdram

40GB Hdd

All for a total of Rs.8,000

Is this the cheapest I can get now? IPCop site says a 486 cpu with 32MB ram is enough. I would prefer a VIA C1 + compatible mobo + 128MB + 40GB

I thought of taking one of the low config machines for sale in TE market, but they don't have warranties.

About your 1st config :

- The M2A692 board would be a better choice between the two. Its based on the more recent AMD 690G chipset, while the 6100 is a tad bit old. Looks fairly feature packed. Also since its an mATX board make sure the number of additional PCI / PCI-e slots is enough for you.

- Dynet may at the most be 100~200 bucks cheaper. If you're on a really tight budget then go ahead for it. The support for it from Delta was quite good - a friend had an issue with a new stick, they tested it and replaced it instantly. So just make sure to memtest your stick as soon as you get it and rest should be fine.

- Zebby has quite a few cabbies that look decent, go through the catalog and pick one that suits you. But i would definitely recommend picking up a better PSU than the default bundled one! If you can squeeze it in, try getting one of the lower-end Seventeam PSUs. Chieftec were offering a couple of PSU's that are Delta OEM's which should be decent too. Otherwise opt at the bare minimum for a Zebronics Platinum for around ~1.4k, our local option to a Powersafe.

- Non-widescreen 19" screens would be 10k+. Again if you're on a tight budget, a non-WS 17" screen would look just as large.

- Do NOT get the APC 500VA UPS, it really cuts down corners both in terms of quality and features.. doesnt even have a port to hook up to your PC for scheduled shutdowns. Either spring in for the APC 650VA, or go for a Powercom or other brand.

About the 2nd rig:

If you're looking specifically for a Via C3 setup, ask Delta about it too. They have these thin-client PCs from Gigabyte for around 6k (IIRC?). You need to pop in your own DDR RAM and hard disk though and you're set to go.

Otherwise put together an AM2 Sempron rig, should be cheaper/better than the Celeron 2.6Ghz. DDR2 RAM would be cheaper, and you have future scalability ;)

Thank you for your views crazy_eddy. Sorry for the delayed reponse though.

So the final config stands like this for the office PC:

AMD64 x2 4000+

Jetway M2A692-GDG [link]

1GB Dynet DDR2 533/667

Seagate 160GB sata

Viewsonic VA703M 17" (square)[http://ap.viewsonic.com/in/products/productspecs.php?id=278]link

LG H42n DVD-RW drive

Samsung Pleomax + logitech optical

or Some MS kbd+mouse combo (at the same price)

Altec Lansing or Creative 2.0 speakers (whichever has the hishest rms)

The problem area is PSU and UPS.

How much wattage should this rig require? Will a zebronics 350Watter that comes with the cabinets be enough?

For the ups, what VA would be good? I have an APC 500VA ups that has a usb connection as well. Maybe the older models have it? Will Powercom and Microtek UPSes have the same warranty and service as the APC ones?

As for the IPCop machine, I too decided that a sempr0n based machine will be better. Here's the config I settled on:

AMD64 Sempron 3000+ = Rs.1,250

MSI K9MM-V [link] = ~Rs.2,300

Dynet 512MB DDR2 533 = ~Rs.1000

Seagate 80GB HDD SATA = Rs.1,800

Dlink 520 Lan card = Rs.400
