Am in both the boats - got some old LPs, got my cassettes as well - though relatively a few in number.

@Chaos,

Subject to availability, are Onkyo Double Deck or Single Deck good enough?

I find lot of Nakamichis on eBay, but the shipping cost will add significant amount. My only worry is if something goes wrong, spares could be a huge issue :(

And what about Denon Turn Tables? I am looking at DP-29F.

^^

And what about Denon Turn Tables? I am looking at DP-29 ~ 9.5K raw. You will need to get an amplifier and speakers.

The entry level denons are pretty bad - best avoided. Get atleast a Project Debut.

Never heard onkyo tape decks but second hand reports suggest they are decent.

DSOTM on vinyl with a good table is an experience in itself. Recently heard my copy (30th anniversary reissue - 180gm LP) on a VPI Classic with dynavector 20x cart and it was just mind blowing. The amp was a pretty spectacular Leben CS600 and the speakers were emerald physics. I still get goosebumps when I think of the experience.

^^

Chaos:

Can you tell me a good site, or shop (NCR) for TT. Budget is no issue, but it should be logical -- as per me. Noob here.

Is the DP-29 really shitty..?

DSOTM itself is an experience and I was just imagining Vinyl DSOTM (having listened to a few LPs when my age was in single digits - still remember them :)). Now this description is pure drool, though I had to google all the brand names to figure out exactly what you are talking about :ashamed:

Damn! Just finished preparing a road-map of my budget HT and Music system setup and upgrades for the next 2/3 years and now I have to prepare my 10-20 year plan as well :P

Do not say budget is a non issue in audio :P. There are tables that cost 200k USD :P. First fix a budget and then decide.

Project is distributed by Nova Audio Mumbai. A little googling should get you the info about them. Call them up and find out who is the local dealer for them.

DP-29 isn't worth the money for sure!

^^ Nice. I have that exact Western Theme LP. Better condition too. Shippy Uncle had picked it up from Italy. Years ago.

@Chos:

Thanks..will try.

^Thanks :)

^^ I love the Good,The Bad and ugly Theme..........it wasssss aweeeesome!

The only regret as a kid i ever had was that other kids would consider "Dishkyoooon" as a gunshot..... for me it was always "sssthoahh" followed by the whistling from the theme....sigh.....loser kids!

Ill try digging up ( actually hell yeah!) my old lp player tooo...lets see if i can power that up too

I've never understood the draw of vinyl :(

These days we are so used to queing up a long playlist and forgetting it. Mixing stuff from anything & anywhere. How does one actually sit through something then get up and turn it over and then repeat again for another disc ?

I can see the use for collectors or DJs, but for just casual listening ?

The other thing that bugs me is many times because the format is shorter in length some tracks are missing from the CD version, which is also a lot easier to rip.

Its this strange combo of latest + old that perplexes me :huh:

I get the impression talking with a few ppl (elsewhere than here) that its more of an emotional thing than anything else. They like it and thats all there is to it, no more discussion!

^^
Well just a matter of taste. :) And pure nostalgia. As a child I remembering listening to them..then tapes came, then cds, then soft files, and other formats. Guess one likes to go back to the 'old times'. Retro rocks. Personally I feel the sound is much more clean, and all the highs are lows are rendered pretty. Pure matter of taste, and feel.

Yea, those Spaghetti westerns. Mmm. Have all 3 on my system including Once Upon a Time in the West. (That haunting harmonica). Ennio Morricone was a genius. The scores are excellent.

Just listen to an LP on a good table with a good system. Its a simple fact - in pure fluidity and tonal purity, even a cheapo record player hands mid-high end CD players their posterior. I'd not waste my time of age old junk unless it actually gave me something more than what a convenient PC+DAC could offer.

I don't care a damn about CD players as they offer me nothing more than a good PC transport. But Vinyl is just something else :ohyeah:. You don't need golden ears to figure it out - even someone used to ipods on a daily basis can easily figure out the difference.

But how do you reconcile the fact that you have no control over the sequence or the selection. The sound must be good but doesn't it get a bit tiring after a bit. In which case could you tell the difference between a lossless rip & the LP itself.

For those special moments sure I can see your point :)
