Hi Guys,

I will be leaving for the US this weekend. Was planning to buy the Olympus Pen E-PL1 from there. The lowest price i could fine online was 500$ plus tax. Would come roughly to 24K (depending on $ rate applied)

I can see the same cam avail on ebay India for about 27K with 2yrs warranty.
I guess i will not get the international warranty when i buy it from US (or, will i ?)

Udit purchased the same cam for 24.5 from ebay i guess, is that after applying some coupon?...@udit, in case you are watching the thread, could you please help me with details on how i can get the cam for same rate, as long as it has warranty.

In bangalore/mumbai. Are there any options for getting the camera at 25-26K with warranty?

JJmehta lists the cam for 28K with a 4GB card, which i am guessing is class 2.

So, calling for any help/info/advice on where should i buy the cam from and whats the best price in India?

Really appreciate your help in advance :)

:hap2:

JJmehta seems to be the cheapest Udit bought it from JJhmehta.
In bangalore you can't get it for that price.
Yes you want get international warranty if bought from the USA.
If you are buying the USA you have other options to like the NEX-3,panasonic GF-1.

Nex-3 & Nex-5 don't match up in terms of image quality. They might allow me to go higher on ISO, but images are soft & lack details when compared to the Oly. Besides, they are more expensive and don't look as good as the Oly. The default kit lens for EPL-1 is one of the best kit lens in that category.

Panny GF-1 is a fast performer with better focusing and shot-to-shot performance, but its expensive and larger than the EPL-1, also more expensive.

I have kinda upgraded my purchase decision from Canon S95 to the Olympus EPL-1. So, looking for best size-to-performance ratio at cap of 500$. The Panny LX5 is also an option, but then image quality is not as good.

JJmehta is the cheapest? But his site quotes 28K. So, is that the cheapest i can get in India?

Well the olympus has better JPEG images, but in RAW capabilty the NEX has the edge, its has better dynamic range and does in camera HDR.
the NEX 3 MSRP is cheaper then the EPL-1.The nex is current favorite for DSLR owners, since with el cheapo adaptors and due to the shortest flange sensor distance its makes its possible to install any make lenses but with MF and has one of the best APS-C size sensors.
The other advantages it has over the EPL-1 is its better built, can shoot about 10% / charge
Have a look at these shots take from the NEX-3 using a old nikon lens Sony Nex and Leica M-Summarit 35/2.5 - Shooters. this guy owns a lot of lenses and also owns a leica x1,gf1,epl-1.
Here is take on NEX3(based on the then firmware) vs EPL-1 http://motimotion.at/blog/2010/07/19/sony-nex-3-vs-olympus-e-pl1-vs-leica-x1-english/

Yes the jjmetha is the cheapest, atleast compared to the shops in bangalore.

You can't go wrong with any of m4/3 cameras or the NEX.

Well, the NEX 3 is 600$ with 18-55mm kit lens and the E-PL1 with 14-40mm is 515$.

Here is a comparison that shows the sharpness and excellent contrast of the E-PL1 over the Nex3

The kit lens for E-PL1 is clearly superior
.
And, i am not gonna be pouring money into expensive lenses any time soon.

E-PL1

Actually, both the cams have their strengths. It's about what one picks, minimum noise over sharpness and details or tolerable noise with superior contrast, sharpness and details.

It's like the classic S-PVA vs IPS battle, I belong to the IPS camp and i know, you are the S-PVA evangelist :)

Coming back to the point...
I am mostly gonna be working with JPEG images, do not have the time or inclination to work with RAW.

Just in case you find any comparison that shows NEX 3 clearly better to E-PL1 with default kit lens, do post it.

For now, the Olympus E-PL1 is better than the NEX 3 in my books.

Thanks for the help, really appreciate.

BTW, where are the other camera guys?

I thought, this post would suck-in some more sharp shooters, but they seem to be all out of focus, so far...

About the kit lens of the Sony 18-55 its really sharp at the centre
