Opera Software today announced the first public Beta of Opera 9. This version includes Widgets, small Web programs running in their own windows that are fun, easy-to-use and live on users' desktops. The Opera 9 Beta also features support for BitTorrent, a popular file downloading technology, in addition to an easy-to-use content blocker and thumbnail previews of tabbed sites.

And yes, Opera remains available free of charge.

"We're proud to release this Beta of Opera 9 to Web users around the world," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "Opera 9 brings powerful new features to enhance the Web browsing experience and empower Web 2.0 developers. Opera 9 unlocks new levels of productivity for the Internet ecosystem."
New features in Opera 9 include
  • Widgets - Small Web applications (multimedia, newsfeeds, games and more) that make your desktop experience more fun. Any Web developer can create their own Widgets and share them, regardless of operating system. Try the Widgets in Opera 9 by pressing F6. Look for further development of Opera Widgets in future releases.
  • BitTorrent - Instead of having to use a separate BitTorrent application for downloading large files, users can now simply click a torrent file and start the download
  • Content blocker - Choose the content you want to view. Remove ads or images - it is up to you. Right-click on the Web page and choose "Block content"
  • Improved rich text editing - Take advantage of rich text editing capabilities when using the latest Web mail or blogging services
  • Customize your search engines – Use your favorite search engine in the search box. Right-click on the site's search field and select "Create search" from the menu
  • Thumbnail preview – It's easy to have many tabs open at once in Opera. But exactly which tab had that video you wanted? Hover any tab to see a thumbnail preview
  • Site-specific preferences - Do you need to view a site in a different way or deny certain cookies? Want to block pop-ups on certain sites only? Site specific preferences hold the key

v8.1 if i remember correctly had bitorrent. Anyway, i have been regularly downloading the weekly builds. So nothing much new in this version for me.
Waiting for the next weekly.

Again I would like to thank you for helping us bring Opera 9 to beta level.

The reason we had to use the second-last build for beta was that we included more fixes in that build than we planned, which again reopened earlier bugs on our regression testing list (which we simply don't accept in a public delivery).

The weekly build today should contain the best of both: The stability enhancements from the last build, but without the regressions since the beta. Oh, and mouse gestures don't crash in Widgets anymore...

Next week you should look forward to a rougher ride again as we plan many, many fixes and improvements.

Whether opera 9.0b2 beta is better than firefox 1.5 ,I am using firefox 1.5

opera 9 seem to be faster than firefox

Opera has always been faster than firefox.Older versions of fx were terribly slow. But v1.1x has improved

This weekly has quite a few goodies, my favourites are exporting bookmarks to Netscape format and support for the CONTENTEDITABLE attribute, which makes Opera more compatible with IE targeted sites.

UI
Bookmarks exported to HTML are now in the Netscape Bookmark File Format, making them compatible with Yahoo bookmarks, Scuttle, MyBookmarks etc.
Further improvements to the new access key interface. Press Shift+Esc to enter access key mode where sites support it, eg Opera Web Browser or BBC NEWS | News Front Page.
Multiline edit fields, compose mail and source viewer now have a
horizontal scrollbar if needed.
Changing alignment of mail headers now doesn't hide or overlap headers

Rendering
Added support for the CONTENTEDITABLE attribute.
Setting table height to 100% now works in quirks mode regardless of
height of parent element(s).
Stand-alone images are now centered on the page - image.css is read again.
User set encoding is now window and site specific.
Baseline for CJK characters is now correct.

Widgets
window.moveTo and window.resizeTo are now supported, as well as window.close.
Fixed unwarranted security violation errors.

Opera press releases
Faster, more efficient downloads in Opera technical preview with BitTorrent
Oslo, Norway - July 7, 2005

Opera Software today launched a technical preview (TP) of the Opera browser for Windows, Linux and Mac that includes support for BitTorrent. Integrating this popular file-downloading technology in the Opera browser offers the end user a faster download process by utilizing full bandwidth and reducing the chance of in-transfer delay when multiple users download the same file.

"While BitTorrent has been on Opera's radar screen for more than a year, the true value of the technology became evident when the company launched Opera 8 in April this year. The massive response, with more than 100 downloads per second, dealt a technical knock-out to Opera's servers. With BitTorrent, users would have had an alternative download mechanism," said Christen Krogh, VP of Engineering, Opera Software.

With BitTorrent, Opera hopes to make it easier for users to download the large amount of legal material available, such as Linux software and computer game demos. The Opera browser will also be offered for download as a torrent file.

Opera already supports other file protocols such as FTP and HTTP, and BitTorrent is the logical next step in the company's strategy to make protocols available that increase productivity and the overall Internet experience for the end-users. The BitTorrent protocol differs from FTP and HTTP in that it makes downloading a large file more efficient, as individuals downloading the same file will assist each other in the download process.

Opera emphasizes that the TP should be used for preview purposes only, and is available for download at the Opera Community beta forum.

Faster, more efficient downloads in Opera technical preview with BitTorrent

Opera integrated bittorrent in version 8.02 for the first time! Cheers!

The Mozilla Foundation asked Opera to sign an agreement on the use of its RSS feed icon in the Opera browser.
Earlier this year, Opera adopted the orange RSS feed icon (pictured on the right) from Mozilla Firefox for use in the Opera browser. This after Microsoft announced that it too would include the icon in the next release of Internet Explorer (IE). There has been an ongoing effort between browser vendors to encourage more consistency between the various browsers.
For now Opera removed the icon in its latest weekly build of the Opera 9 desktop browser, which was released today.
“We fully respect their rights to the icon and will not use it as long as this isn’t sorted out”, said Johan Borg, Opera UI developer and Desktop team manager at Opera Software.
It’s not clear whether Opera and Mozilla will work this issue out in time for the release of Opera 9 later this month

Well . donno why ... but i face indention problems with GMail ... the customized one ... the shoutbox at TechTalkz.com Community - Powered by vBulletin ... other forums like that of guru3d .. and a very noticeable one is with the Nokia sites .. where the phones list (swf file) can't be clicked on .. the list is quite long .. here and there a bit ...

Gmail along with G!Chat works, but set browser id as "Mask as Mozilla" (Remember to mask as mozilla and not identify as).
I am not registered at that forum but in guest view the shoutbox looks ok.
