Options after MBBS

If you are fine with PG in something other than medicine, you are also open to pursue M.Tech in Bio-informatics. I am not too knowledgeable of the prospects in this area, but from what I heard, you could get hooked in private Pharma companies in research oriented jobs with hefty pay. I am also not sure about all the places that offer this course, but the place I did my M.Tech from (IIIT-A) does offer this specialization. B.Pharm and MBBS graduates are eligible for it. Area requires background of medicine/pharma and involves application of computers.

Yes UPSC is another good option. Requires almost no medical work, just plain bureaucratic paperwork.
Ah, I didn't know that. See to run your own hospital you don't even need any medical qualifications, just some management sense and a steady patient influx. Short courses and CMEs do not help in teaching us skills. Whatever we learn is learned as a student or in practice. Becoming a doctor is a lifelong process and no one can be a good doctor without tons of experience and studying.
You should probably do an MBA so as to get the hang of running your hospital and then run it well. There are hundreds of options for doing MBA, even while sitting at home.

Incorrect, In Govt. service Doctors have ot do their job. Its different that some decide not to!

On running a Hosp, see I have a qualification now so this negates the point that one doesn't even need to be a Doc to run a Hosp. I won't just be running(managing) but also looking after patients.
CME's don't help but short courses do. See our Medical education is so rotten/British/antique that a normal MBBS graduate doesn't know much. Even post-grads & superspecialists learn most of the work post-qualification at a place where they work(Govt/Private).

I've been born & brought up in a Doctor family(atleast 100 years) into the profession with immediate family members stretching from Civil Surgeons to Directors to superspecialists. So, I have enough experience, more than an average MBA would have in running a Hosp. Therefore, doing MBA now doesn't make much sense.

MBA sitting at home, you mean correspondence. That can be done.
Do you have some addresses of good Univs?

That's an interesting avenue, wish I had the time for this but as I said will have to do someting to run my Hosp. now.

Im also keen to pursue Gene/DNA studies, Nanotech, Biotech. Alas, this shall only be possible once Im able to set my Hosp. rolling.

To pursue your dreams or to pursue your career.. atleast youve had the chance to pursue one. There are many people who are capable of far greater than they will ever get a chance to be but never got the chance to pursue either. Every day I have urges to get into medicine but like you said.. fate. Be happy youre living the dreams of millions of others.

Wealth is nothing compared to improving people's survivability is all I can say to people who get into medicine for money.

Did I mention Im unhappy, I would have been happier doing something else, something of my choice but that's history & time gone by.

Regarding your last comment, let me explain in detail. When I first joined Medical college, everyone(all the students) would be heard saying "there's a lot of money in Medical profession", I used to dislike this behaviors & tell them if you people are after money, try some other profession. The psychology of making money through this noble profession has created all the rot & belittled the profession. Almost 98.9% of the M.B.B.S students would tell you that they are interested in the profession because of money. What a disgrace.

I was always anti-corruption, principled & had good morals. Then in the medical college I was asked to bribe the Professors, not doing so awarded me with supplies. I was always hot blooded & kicked the damn professors later. Most of the teachers in Medical colleges are a frustrated lot, why? Because they always wanted to make money but could not because could not do private practice. Then they take out their frustration on students & unlike other streams students continue to get harassed because have no other choice. Revolt & you are failed.

All this & more only pushed me further away from the profession. Let me also tell you that our Hosp. has been running for the last ~ 60yrs & we have been serving the poor by not charging & still our rates continue to less than even the so-called Charitable Hosps. This is the reason why we are short of funds & I have to work to get the Hosp. back in shape. Had we minted money, I would have been happily doing PG somewhere by now.

So, please don't preach, I've been through all this & more.

I am super happy to read your response and im glad you took the time to write it out so others who find this read have a realization from your views about how corrupt everything has gotten regarding money and medicine. I have nothing to add/defend, I'm happy you wrote from your heart, if you have an im, I'd be glad to talk to someone like you. :)

In the same vein, I would add that this is the scene everywhere & not only in Medicine. The rot is omnipresent.
A Doctor is no different from any other Human/In-human being & lives in the same environment/surroundings. System as a whole needs cleaning.
BTW, does anyone know of any MCI guidlines on who can run a Hosp?

Im also intereseted in MBA Hosp. Management through correspondence. Could someone tell which are the good Univs/colleges that offer the course?

Hello fellows, I was thinking about doing something in Gene Studies(therapy)/DNA Studies/Stem Cells, etc. Could someone guide on what all courses are offered for such kind of studies & where?

Next wave of treatments are going to be through DNA manipulations, so the avenues should be great!

Dude,

I suggest you still try and get into pg. One of the biggest hurdle for a mbbs grad gettin into pg is the discouragement and negative feelings that are spread during his internship, which prevents him from giving a serious attempt for the pg entrance. Believe me a sincere committed goal-directed effort is enough to land you a post grad seat in a clinical branch in your first attempt, inspite of all the hurdles like corruption and fixing of seats in university level, reservations, etc.

As for doctors trying to earn money is concerned, i see nothing wrong in it. Here we are trying to mix up two issues one is making money and second is unethical practice. After studying for almost 23-24 years, putting so much of hard work, wouldnt a person like to earn good money and give a good life to his family. Problem arises when he starts indulging in unethical practice to earn more money.

Let me give you an example, I am leaving home from hospital as i have got some urgent work, i start looking for an autorickshaw, that fellow demands rs100 knowing well that the meter wont charge more than 50, he doesnt care that I am into a "noble" profession and all he does is tries to exploit me. Suddenly when something happens to that autorickshaw driver, he turns up as a "poor" chap with a family of 5 people to feed, expecting me treat him for free. Here I am not talking abt life threatening emergencies, which should be attended at any cost. But he could well go to a govt hospital and get himself treated. But what gets projected in the society is the doctor "demanded" money which the poor chap cant afford and finally he had to land up in a govt hospital to get treated.

So I think this "noble" profession thing works only when the doctor has to discharge his duties, but the people never or rarely reciprocate their feeling towards this noble profession. Day in and day out there are innumerable cases of doctors being beaten up and hospitals being ransacked, in which other profession is this kind of treatment given when results arnt upto the expectations of the consumer.

looks like I am drifting off topic. But then I have just 2 thing to says, try and get into pg, no it doesnt give you great money, but definitely its satisfying. And there nothing wrong in docs tryin to earn more money as long as his treatment is ethical, there is transparency in his dealings and he practices evidence based medicine.

@DrSyed, I've moved on from ethical/unethical mambo-jambo! Just need to know about Colleges/Univs. offering DNA Studis/Gene therapies/Stem Cells, etc. Also, the prospects after doing such courses?

As far as PG is concerned, I've completed my Internship ~ 2yrs back & no plans to do a PG in Medicine. There's not much fun slogging for a career you don't like enough.

Here are some of the options, you might want to look into...

If you are not interested in pursuing further studies in medicine, go for hospital management course or MBA.

UPSC is another option but the process of exams , interviews and results takes a minimum time of approx 2 years. i had appeared for UPSC when i joined MD and interviews were somewhere after 1 year. So far i have not heard from them regarding my postings/recruitment and in the meanwhile my MD is over now ( though there was lack of initiative on this front at my end). This informtion is not to discourage you but to let you know that it takes time and help you decide if you are ready to sit idle waiting for things to happen.

Some of my friends opted for IAS exams and few succeeded, you might want to check your interest in this field.

Another of my friends joined UN peace force and has been on africa tour since last three years, i heard that they give you permanent position after 5 years with a handsome package.

You can start a NGO on your own, if you want to serve people in rural areas.

DNB too has centralised exams now, and you will still need to study and go through the process of rankings, counselling and seat allocation.

my suggestion would be to join house job first and then decide what you want to do..that way you will not waste your precious time and at the same time gain experience and make some moolah.

It is very unfortunate to know that people do not want to pursue medicine after MBBS,its not just about any one person but the general consensus, the state of things is pathetic and getting a MD of choice is difficult, given the ratio of graduation to post graduation seats. and ist does not end there ..you still need to fight for DM/McH. Hope the government will increase seats to a level par with MBBS seats.

As far as ethical practice is concerned, it is difficult..corruption ( read kickbacks) and need for a bigger name does not allow you to do it. Its very simple decision for people, they opt for a doctor who treats fever in 3 days and not the ones who take a week. As a doctor you can make the fever vanish in one day without addressing the actual cause and address the issue when you are sure the patient will not be lost from your practice. Given the scenario, the honest doctors are loosing patients , but again there are always some ethical names in medical practice and they have taken their time..

And ahh..i forgot to mention the lucrative ones..go for USMLE or try for recruitment in Singapore. this is what people do these days.

If i had an hospital setup of my own at time of MBBS, i would have devoted my time in establishing its name. Talk to reputed doctors in city and enroll them to practice in your own hospital. having a hospital setup is every medicos dream and i would not waste my time doing MD if i had that option at hand.
