Hi guys

I have been using outlook express6 for mailing.Yesterday I found that my one folder got emty. That is development.dbx file. But file size is showing 47mb but When i clicked on that folder only one mail is showing.plz suggest me a recovery software for recovering it.I lost more that 100 mails

What does development.dbx -> right click -> Properties say ?

( This folder contains : what ).

You didn't delete the messages, did you ?

development.dbx is the folder i had made in the personnal folder and i have moved some mails to that folder.Total size of that folder is 41mb.It was so many mails i have moved to this folder from inbox.I did not delete even single mail. But automatically missed lot of mails. How can i retrieved that mails. pls help me out.

It is easy !:hap2:

Separate out the development.dbx file which is having 41mb or so. Do the same for the other file having the same name with lessor size.

When file size exeeds certain limit, OE normally rename that biggersize file.dbx into file001.dbx or something similar to it. Outlook Exp opens only the files without any additions ie., it opens only inbox.dbx if it found 2 / 3 inbox001.dbx, inbox002.dbx etc. You can findout the same by looking into the folder where you have your .dbx file which have only one file with the extention .dbx ( for eg., deleted.dbx) Indeed i could not remember exactly, how OE renames the files. Mostly it is in the lines as indicated above.

Be sure not to open OE while you are doing the renaming process, otherwise OE won't allow you to rename. Please also ensure no other file in the same name exists. Open OE and check the folder after you successfully rename the file.

another option is also there. Just remove/ move any file with the name development*.* form that OE folder and keep the development.dbx which you indicated having 41mb size. In this case ensure the 41mb file having extension of.dbx

One more caution, first check whether you are logging into OE in the same username you used your original development.dbx.

reply with the resuls:D

My problem is simple.Devolopment.dbx is not renamed my OE itself.I have created it.I have been simply moving related mails from inbox to development.dbx folder every day.I think it would be more than 100 mails in that folder.now it is showing only one mail. But size of that folder is 41mb.I renamed and checked but no result.

take one more attempt. rename that 41mb file as inbox.dbx. do this after you move ur original inbox.dbx to some other place. Restart OE. you will see all your mails in the missed folder now in the inbox

try!

Edit: Sorry ......... I got the probem. did you made any compression or such other things?

no i did not do any such things. As u told i renamed and checked.only one mail it could display.Pls tell me some recovery tool for this

First take a backup of the file "Development.dbx" and then try this...

Tools >> Options >> Maintenance >> Clean up now >> Compact

If its fixed, its good, if its not, check the file again. If the file size has reduced that means either of the two things:

1. Somebody has deleted your messages. The files size was showing because the database was not "zapped". The messages were just marked for deletion and a copy was saved in "Deleted Items.dbx".

2. Outlook has "dropped" the messages because of a improper shutdown.

If the size is still 41MB, that means the header is completely corrupted. But this must not happen.

Check and tell me what happened, and I will tell you further what to do.

One last attempt.. Goto -- view---> current view---> show all mails in the menu . then goto the concerned folder and check.

any result?

That means your header has gone kaput. The only way to recover your emails now is this...

Search and download a outlook recovery software like R-mail or Dbxtract and extract eml file froms the dbx and reimport then to the folder.

Can u name some free recovery tools. I 2 am facing the same problem.. One that I know of is MailNavigator. Its an email client, but in the free version you cannot export emails.

There are hardly any free outlook recovery tools. You can try and search for Dbxtract free version, though its hard to find. Just some time back, it was free, now it has tag of $7.

OT,

Iv heard that a log/record is kept of every ail sent/received and if one wants, they can trace everything of this sort. There is a way to delete this right? can anyone tell me how?

Raja hope u dont mind me using your thread..

As in.. When i use Outlook Express, it keeps a record of all the mails sent and received. This data can be traced and if someone wants to, they can know to whom the mails were sent and their content. Also, i can find out all the mails that were received and their content.

So my question is, how do i remove these "trails" ?
